RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Alright, i see a couple of us are on here right now.

I am building mine, even though it looks like rain tomorrow morning.

I am trying to get the front throttle conrtol rod in and I dont get it. There is no place for the control rod to go to get around the fuel tank. the fuel tank fits fine, but once i put the control rod in, the fuel tank doesnt fit right anymore cause the control rod is in the way. I looked through the instructions and didnt see a suggestion. Maybe i am missing something.

what engine crash?

kokamo 05-06-2005 09:43 PM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

sctcrash.......you will have to bend and twist and finiggle it as it comes out of the firewallin it's intended place the manual states. It took me about three wires and two hours to get it right to where it wouldent bind up any. Of course this is on a saito engine but any 4 stroke may be similar. Good luck!

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

crash, you may have to reverse the carb to get the best route, mine comes out on the right side (passenger) just beside the tank and right to the throttle arm, its close but it works good!

sctcrash 05-06-2005 09:55 PM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

its an os 46 ax

the throttle is in a similar position to the pix, it just doesnt move very freely that way.

I think i may have to go with trial and error like kokamo

kokamo 05-06-2005 09:59 PM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Barry.....Raid..... that brown stuff is called "grass"......you know......that stuff that grows out of the ground when you have dirt and rain at the same time? Oh Raid, I forgot, you live in the desert! :) And Barry, you still got snow?[sm=confused.gif]

Seriously, our feild gets trimmed up every week by a local yard service guy. It also has a sprinkler system that comes on every night to water the feild. I really dont think it gets the water all the way out onto the feild tho. Looks pretty good throughout the year.

Laters, Joe

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Crash I had to run a throttle cable (Sullivan I think) just fished the plastic through the holes then the cable ..connected them at either end ..I would prefer a rod though ..so if you have the patience (like koko=see shiny muffler) then go for it!

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

:)gjeffers. This tank deal is making me mad. I couldn't stand it so I tore the 11 oz (325CC) tank out of my UCD and compared it to the 270 CC (9 oz) stock tank. Guess what?!?!?! Mine are the same size too. All this time I been thinking I'm flying with 11 oz and find out it's only 9. Now I got to cut down my run times. What gives? Somehow I feel like I've been cheated. Makes me want to take up surfing. And I do have an old board that I've repaired. (epoxy and fishing leader) Well, for now I'm going out and fly.
Thanks,
Barry

Barry Cazier 05-07-2005 06:50 AM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

:) Crash, I had to use an xactao knife to whittle/cut away a small amount of wood to allow for the plastic tubing to fit. It is tight. But I have an oversized 11 oz fuel tank. Anyways, I've gone to a Syluvan flexible tubing and cable throttle linkage. They are really cool, light, and will flex around all the corners/bends etc. I also like the way the allen set screw tightens against the cable better than a rod. But be sure an anchor/glue/sew the tubing near the throttle linkage and servo arm or you'll get a little flex which can cause delay throttle spool up.
thankds.\

:)Are any of you guys thinking about the Giant UCD? I keep looking at it and I'm thinking it just too big for me. I don't have any engines that would fly it. But I'm intrigued. And I love that pink color.
Thanks,
Barry

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Dammit, i didnt finish last night. I still had to figure out my throttle cable, remount the motor, mount the canopy, trim and balance. At 2 i decided to sleep. I dont know if i will get to fly it till next saturday now, gonna be a long week. I like another set of eyes on it before i maiden.

My first Somethin Extra lasted about 30 seconds due to some aileron reversing, so i am still weary of going solo on the maiden. Right now i am in a new small club so I only really see others at the field on Saturday.

And then their is the matter of the drill hole in my hand. A little mishap making a ply block for the fuel filler valve. Ouch.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Hey Kokomo, Just a little belated congrats on the maiden flight. CG at 5.5 feels great ounce you get used to it. Again congrats.

Hey CeeGee, If it flies its great. Like someone said this is our thread. So let us know how that twist flies. I was thinking of getting one for a second 3D'er.

Working today, no flying, but then again this is how we support our addiction.

SPUD's out.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Hey Barry, I was looking at the giant u-can-do, love everything about it but the pink. It should fly about the same as the others just bigger. I am either going to get the seagull harrier or the 60 size ucando. But I still have to maiden my 1/5 scale monocoupe, and 1/4 scale cap 232. Both of them are made by kangke. My cap has the os 1.60fx in it and it is a power house!!!!!!!! While I was breaking in the engine for it. I was adjusting the low speed by doing the nose up and nose down thing, and with the 18x6 on it, if I would have let go of it, my wife would have had her hands full with her first flight of an airplane!!!! As for that damm girlie pink giant ucando, It would be like putting a 1.20 in a 46 size IMHO.

My UCANDO is here!!
So now i have a few more questions.
Should I:
1. Get a 90 oz Servo no matter what i have to do.
2. Put 2 3003s on the elevator and use 1 of the 3004s for the rudder.
3. Put a 3003 on the rudder (I am really just going to be sport flying it for now).
4. Any combination, but get a 6.0 V battery to get more torque.
.............
sctcrash,
All three UCD's in the picture below use Futaba S3004 servos, that's 18 servos. I was not inclined to over spend for that many servos. Futaba doesn't overrate their servos and the S3004's work very well on these slow planes. They can do knife edge loops, blenders, etc. Keep in mind that the rudder has aerodynamic counter balance and the elevators have an even greater percentage of counter balance which takes some of the load off the servos.

The second pic below shows where my UCD 46 throttle cable exits the firewall and connects to the Saito .72 throttle arm. The tank is stock. Flex cables are just another option and the one I prefer. They will tolerate a slight bow or misalignment and retain free movement.

kokamo,

I did cycle it the best I could. I turned it on and left it on until it was competly dead, then I charged it back up the normal way with the wall charger. I have done this several times and it usually lasts for 4 or 5 hours at the feild. Again, I may have switched it on when I put it in the flight box or it just may be time for a new one. .....
Take care not to discharge your batteries too many times until they are flat dead. The weakest cell in the pack will reach zero volts first and will be charged in the reverse direction as the stronger cells continue to discharge. There will come a time when the weaker cell cannot be recharged fully in the correction direction.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

:)Flew today at the Shelly fun fly. It was raining like crazy. I few my recently repaired UCD60. It was my maiden since crash. It flew pretty good but I've got the weight to far back. I'm gonna haft to move my battery forward a little bit. But it felt good to fly her. It was windy and rainy and my first time flying off of a paved runway. On landing I thought, ok I'll set her down on the grass beside the pavement, then on approach I said, _____ no I'm setting her down right in the middle of the paved runway which is what I did. Squated the gear just a tiny bit but overall it was a great landing. Made me nervous though.

Have any of you guys tried a throttle to aileron mix in your radio? It's pretty cool. Oh and don't mis understand, I don't mix it for myself it's for the newcomer who doesn't know how to set up his radio. Makes for a great display of flymanship. Anyway, had a good day in spite of the weather. The UCD made my proud.
Thanks,
Barry

How do you mix throttle to ailerons, or why?

Ok guys, I have an offer to you all. I would like to offer this to you guys first since you all have been so nice to me.

I have a spare UCD46 wing availible to sell to someone if anyone wants it. It has no servos in it and has one small tear in the covering real close to the fuse. It aslo has pinned hinges pinned with toothpicks and CA glue.

LEMMIE KNOW!!! Just like E-bay, it goes to the high bidder. If no one wants it here, it will go on e-bay. Make an offer, Also think about shipping;) I'll post pix if anyone is interested.

LATERS!

Just was hoping you did'nt "REKIT" the new one today or anything.

kokamo 05-07-2005 09:13 PM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

No sir, I don't have plans on "REKIN'"it very soon. The reason I am selling it is because I am getting the $$$$ together for a small foam profile to practice on here at my house rather than go all the way to the feild. (20 miles away) I have an idea of what I want but not real sure yet. Prolly somthing brushless and have a single wing....not a bipe. Any ideas?

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

I sold alot of my old rc car stuff a while back to get an electric. Messed around with a GWS corsair for a few flights, but wasnt what i was looking for. I bought the Yak-55 from Hobby-Lobby, bought it with the recomended motor they had, both plane and motor were on sale. Picked up the speed contoller on Ebay, and a lipo at the local hobby store.

Check out the Hobbico Mark II charger if you dont have a charger already. For $50 it will charge NiCad, NiMH and Lipo. It says LiMH on it, but they updated the web site and it does charge 2-3 cell Lipo, plus it charges 2 batteries at a time. Good charger for 50.

I like the yak, got it cought in a try and bought some depron and rebuilt a new one, good thing i traced the peices. Damn wind blows those foamies like crazy.

well me and my son had a bad day, got his new saito 91 mounted early this morning and got it all broke in(just ran a fuel line to a gallon of fuel and burned it up) tweaked her down enough to fly and went to the strip got her up and she was awsome and then he brought her down to land and came in a little wide on the edge of the runway and hit a large rock which broke the engine off the mount, bent a pushrod and tube and broke off a couple of fins and cracked a valve cover but it will live to see another day.

as for me i bumped my throttle and my plane jumped out and bit me, applied pressure to my left forearm and plugged the holes(4 five inch cuts) and off to the urgent care where they put most of the skin back in place and said they wernt deep enough to sew(would have called Barry for that), but my plane flew perfect and i brought it home in one piece, what a day, im tired, bye bye:D

:)gjeffers, Man, I am sorry. Nobody should have that kind of day. That arm really looks sore. That has got to hurt. My thoughts are with you.

PS: CA works better than sew for skin cuts.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Kokamo

Check out page 76 of the new Model Airplane (assuming you get it). Thats the Yak, and the motor at the bottom is the motor i use. They have a video on the site that shows it flying, i can testify that with that set up, thats how it flies.

Last week I went to the field with it and showed a couple of guys, we are all trying to learn 3D, and there i am hovering with a little foamy. Not well, but still hovering.

Also, not to get U Can Do'd out, but the U Can Do EP looks indestructable, its like a big foam sock with wings. The owner of a LHS has one and he loves it.

The biggest tip i can give is go Brushless and go LiPo. I tried to get a feel for it with a standard can motor and a NiMH and almost gave it up till a friend talked me into the yak. I am walking up the block in a half hour to go fly, charge when i get home and go back up later. Its great. Once you get the bug and the electronics, there are lots of free plans for Depron and fanfold planes out there.

gjeffers, sorry to see and hear what happened to your son and you! Those darn whirlly things can do some damage. I don't get to go flying today, but I am going to get some more airplanes ready for monday or tuesday.

Oh Man!! If you get away from this thread for a couple of days you can really miss a lot!! [:-]
Gjeffers, Sorry to hear about your son's plane and your arm. Yikes! That looks nasty! [X(] [X(] I hope it's feeling better by now...... Did you get the fuel tank question resolved? I got my finger cut to the bone by a guy in the LHS last year and it was with my knife. [:-] Man that hurt...... I forgot untill then the joy of getting stitches............:(

I got the Twist done finally....... It's looking cool [8D] I didn't get a chance to fly it yesterday. We put some money on a new house last week so I had to spend yesterday spiffying up this place to put it on the market. So now we are moving again but at least I'll have a really good spot in the new house to set up a hobby room. The room even has it's own bathroom. [X(]

I've flown a Twist before and they are a little simular in flight to the UCD but a little different too. I'm looking forward to getting this one up this week.........:D

well we got Brocks plane all repaired, just waiting on the push rod tube, push rod and valve cover and it will be better than new, since the front fuse was busted a little we just went ahead and took the ramp out and reded the whole front and beefed up the inside of the firewall, turned out great,(made Brock feel a lot better).its a new day and the roses are blooming.[8D]

nice plane CeeGee ive thought about gettin one, just might later!

gjeffers, are you starting the plane in the back or your blazer? I know this is going to sound like preaching, but that is a big safety hazard as you have experienced. The only time that I am in front of my airplane is during starting, but after that every thing else is done from behind it. Do you have a thing called a third hand? If not let me know OK. The one that I use is stuck in the ground and then the tail goes in it. No chance of the plane getting away. Another way it to get two Iron rods about 15 inches long and pad the upper 7 inches and then stick them in the ground to capture the tail. I can make either one and all I ask is for the cost of the materials and postage. here is a pic of the one that I use.

gjeffers 05-08-2005 02:48 PM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

thanks goldenclan, i do it on the tailgate because this is a very sandy place and i have started it on the ground before but i noticed that sand was swirling and getting on the cowl(thus going down the carb) so i built a plywood tarmack with holes for the gear and a 10 lb weight for the tailwheel to go in and i forgot the weight because we were so intent on getting that new saito up, but i wasnt right in front(might as well been) but off to the side and when it came loose the wing tip hit me and the plane turned right into my arm at probably about 6000rpm,well it wont happen again, im building a cage to fit on the tailgate so itscant get me again.

Thanks
