Where do you put the Spoilers on a wing that is going to use spoilers as banking controls, like ailerons ? I'm currently building a wing to a multi engine airplane, I plan on using full span Fowler flaps using the Hobby Lobby Easy Fowler Flap Hinges, and would like to have spoilers do the banking on the model, just like on the jet airliners I've flown in and watched deploy. I know that all jet airliners do have ailerons, but I also have seen spoilers deploy for turning. I also know of a turboprop business full scale airplane that uses spoilers for all roll control...so it has been done.
Where do I place the spoilers ? Do I place them up near the top center of the wing-or down close to the trailing edge of the wing ?
Has anyone used the Hobby Lobby Easy Fowler Flap Hinges before ? If so, how did they work out ? I have these now on hand for the wing.
I've built and finished the fuselage to my three engine model, and I have built the center section to the wing. I now am starting the outer wing panels, and need to know where to place the roll control spoilers...or if it is even feasible to do so...I also built the model as a "V" tail, and set the "V" angle at 109 Deg. per instructions from the advise from one of my expert club members.
If a "V" tail multi engine model seems a bit weird...Beechcraft did this years ago, and I saw the Twin "V" at Van Nuys airport many years ago. It looked like a Beech Travelair Twin with a "V" tail instead of the standard conventional tail set up, all the rest of the Beech Travelairs seem to have.
I would appreciate any information that would help me finish the models wings...

I think they normally have the pivot at around the 80 percent chord location. It is a trade off of effectiveness and locations to put in the mechanics. They have an action that is similar to an aileron that is upgoing only.
Don't know about the hinges though.

Bob...I use the HobbyLobby hinges on all my big warbirds for the flaps and they install easy plus have the ability to remove the flaps while painting etc..........Spoilers work fine.....on the large jets they are @ 70%-75% aft of leading edge.......just above and slightly forward of the trailing edge flaps.......during WW2 the P-61 Black Widow (Northrop) used spoilers for roll control.......small ailerons were added just to give pilots some feedback on roll inputs..........the biz turboprop your speaking of is the MU2.....Bill...........

Dear Bill;
Thanks for the information...for I start the construction of the outer wing panels today.
I've been given conflicting information...one soul told me to mount the spoilers up near the top of the arch of the airfoil on the top of the wing.
You and Ben have told me to mount them aft, just forward of the trailing edge.
I will mount them just as you have suggested...thanks guys.
Bill, also thank you for the Hobby Lobby Fowler Flap Hing information...they are neat hinges and take care of a tricky problem...

Hinging the spoilers up near the high point is the method used by gliders to promote the most drag for the least spoiler area.
But most of them used for roll control seem to be back further as Ben said. I suspect it's so the roll effect is enhanced while avoiding the pitching reaction that the model gliders usually have.

Thank you for the information, and I will be mounting my spoilerons as far aft as I am able to.
A good buddy of mine in Reno has a Sr. Telmaster with spoilers at the center of the high arch in the airfoil. What I noticed when I deployed the spoilers, is that the nose would dive...and like right now too. So placing spoilers at/or near the center of pressure will cause the nose to drop, when the spoilers are activated.
I guess placing the spoilers aft near the trailing edge of the wing will act as ailerons and not cause such a displacement, with the nose of the aircraft. I'm no aerodynamic scholar...but I've been in aviation and this hobby all my life. This will be a little experiment on my current build project. I just pray that I've not put to many experiments into one model...
Thanks again for the input...
