Additional Item for Red's Stack-Up

Hey Red:
Here is another item for a District's Stack-Up.
Personal snail mail Contact:
Sandy is contacting District VIII members by personal snail mail. They do not have to be either a Club Officer, Contest Director or a Leader member. They are getting personal letters telling them of the great performances of Sandy Frank as the D-8 VP.
Sandy mentions that he is being opposed by Mike Moss. Obviously he does not consider Jim Branum or H. Cain any significant threat as he fails to mention their names.
Now using the figure of some 18,000 AMA members in D-8, that brings postage alone to some $6,660.00 +/- plus printing and handling. If Sandy is covering this cost personally, then good for him.
However if he is using it as advertising the SWAC, then SWAC profits may cover Sandy's show, even though Sandy uses his position and his magazine space to also advertise SWAC.
Of course this individual Personal Contact could also be considered a VP's duty and therefore be covered under his AMA Travel Budget. After all it is Personal Contact with the District Members.
In any case, SF has established something new for a VP's keeping-in-touch so I will bet that it isn't the last time such will be employed. A VP has access to membership lists and such where a regular member does NOT. (I was refused a list of Leader Members last year.) So, Red, as I have said before, "Watch ol' JM's hat. It may be a small hat however it houses many rabbits."
Hmmmm! Wonder if he slipped one to SF?
Here is a VP making Personal Contact at Chicago show circa 1980.

From: Corona, CA,
That's quite a picture of you, Horrace.
It brought to mind the fact that you were never the VIII VP. I wonder how many people realize that you ran as a 10 year + resident of IL and went on to become the D 6 VP. Now, I notice you changed your Nickname area to reflect the fact that you apparently were born in Texas and currently reside there some of the year. I have also noticed you have developed a pronounced "drawl" in your writings. I wonder just how many people know that you were the D 6 VP and not the D 8 VP. I have noticed over the years that although you most always address other VP's by their district, you omit the fact that you represented D 6. After you take out the years you served in the military and the years you lived in D 6, I guess it is artistic license to say your a "Texican".
For anyone that wants to read some really interesting history, go to the AMA web page and enter the Member's Only area. The digital archives contain something like 25 years of Model Aviation. If you do a search in the years from 1978 through, oh say, 1983 with the search words "AMA news" you will find some very interesting reading each month. Not only in the D VI column, but in virtually every VP's and the President's column. It was interesting time in the AMA. The folks in office had a lot more to say about what was going on. There are a lot of comments from others as well. Be sure to read the words of John Worth, then AMA ED as well.
Now, by no means is this all pointed at Horrace, the folks writing then were pretty open to having their say about anything and everything.
Another item that seems to have been lost in history is that Horrace ran for Sec/Tres while he was D6 VP. Horrace, would that be the "scars-on-my-back" that you describe in another post? At about the same time he lost that election to Jim McNeil, he withdrew as the D 6 VP. Horrace had won a write-in election for D 6, not D 8. A review of the AMA News in the era will provide a clue as to how he was able to do that.
It's not surprising that the D 6 VP would be in a picture in Chicago circa 1980. Thanks for prodding my memory, Horrace.

My profile here on RCU states "Native Texan..."
I was born some 75 miles NNEast of Houston in Polk County, a part of the "Big Thicket National Preserve". I lived in Texas, went to school in Texas, and after entering the Aviation Cadet program, I remained in Texas for almost 3 years until I had to go to Sacramento, Left Coast, to attend the Advanced Navigation, Reconnaissance and Bombardment school.
After some tours to several other places, I wound up in Laredo TX as an Instructor Pilot in both T-33 and T-38 aircraft. I resided again in my native state -- not area -- for some 4 years before leaving the USAF for United Airlines where I flew out of Chicago, then Cleveland, then Denver and the final years 1987 I bid back to ORD to finish my time until retirement in 1996.
I moved back to the Republic in 1985 and commuted to DEN then ORD. Many pilots commute. (Pat Wilcox, father of the current CL World Champion Combat flier, and a member of Jetero RC, still commutes to Hong Kong or someplace over there.)
If living in Texas for 44 of my 67 years plus being born here does not constitute being a native then why do I have a Texas driver's license and a Texas Concealed Handgun Permit, plus resident hunting and fishing licenses? YES I Know you don't have to be a native for all that. Just a bit for you humor-impaired types?
JR I snipped the drivel about the old magazines, and such.
As far as my being a Dist VI VP, gee, I never knew that such a public record was any secret. I certainly spoke of it many times, especially in rec.models.rc.air. The oldies remember and the newbies don't give a dog feces.
You mention my residing here some of the year. Yep, since retirement I have been spending a portion of the summers in cooler conditions. I don't spend as much time away as I did when working so what's the beef? I have a small summer place in the UP of MI. I also RVed much of the US, Nova Scotia, and Alaska. Does that also throw me out of TX residency?
I wish I could claim MI residency. As a non-resident I pay THREE TIMES the resident tax rate on that little summer cottage and 1.5 acres on that small lake. Almost as much as I pay on my TX 2 acres, nice home, in-ground pool, and 40 x 60 steel barn on a slab.
Now JR you bring up the EVP election preceding my withdrawal from the EC. That has been explained around the forums several times. If the rules were as today, I would have been the EVP as I won the first election with 49% of the vote. Back then there had to be a run-off.
A current employee of the AMA, then rather new, (not many left to choose from) told me the run-off was seeded. Only a chosen number received ballots, at least adequately seeded to secure the election for McNeil.
So JR, whatever it is that motivates you to be the lackey for the current EC is strictly your concern. You can suck up to the EC as you wish. Whether it's the way they pat/scratch your head or whatever is no concern to me.
To expend some of my time as a volunteer for model aviation, I do for Love-of-Sport. I don't have to suck up and/or suck ash. If it comes to that then I don't need it. I will you my portion as you seem to love it.
Right Now, of some 18,000 D-8 members, I predict SF 1500, J. Branum 600, M. Moss 500, H.Cain 350. Lost-destroyed 950.

From: Corona, CA,
Gee Horrace, all I did was take a walk down memory lane.
Thou doest protest to much.
The only thing in your post that surprised me was the fact that I pointed to your writings and that of others and you characterized it as "drivel".
I guess you should know better than I.
JR
PS, the claim was made by you in your campaign statement about being a 10+ year member of Dist 6, it was not something that I divined. Oh.. I still think it's a nice picture.
