Default Hanging Stuff From An RC Model Aircraft

Without giving away too many surprises, just for kicks, I was thinking about hanging something off of my plane while on display at the field and/or flying. I plan on hanging it from a Hangar 9 Ultra Stick .60, and I'm almost certain that it should not drastically affect how the plane flies. I know that pilots can tape streamers and things of the sort to foamies and whatnot, but what are the regulations agains hanging a relatively small object from a glow fuel aircraft? It will be well secured so it will probably have to be cut off or something in order for it to come off, so I know it won't fall off in flight and knock a golfer (we fly very close to a golf course, as well as within 3 miles of an active airport) in the head. Going off on a tangent, we actually fly in the traffic pattern for runway 19 at KPRB, where most single engine aircraft do their downwind leg. Also, I've heard of myths at the field where a bad golfer shot a golfball into the wing of a .40 size airplane and punched a hole in the covering, and the ball was also found inside the wing when the plane landed. [X(] Thanks for your help.

A streamer that is too large will make the plane resist turning and yank the rear end of your plane around. I suppose a banner, if it was too big would cause handling problems. No guts, no glory, just don't kill anybody.

As far as I know there is no rule against "hanging" anything from your plane. People tow banners, gliders and even fly flags, fun flys have the flour bombs or egg drop. Scale airplanes carry bombs and other droppables, paratroopers, and no problem. Just don't fire rockets of any other "fireworks"

Man all this tuff sounds pretty dangerous and is probably a detriment to the hobby in general. I think you should get STL on the job as he is an official AMA liaison and will get a clarification via email sent to Amy responded to by Carl M. That golf ball thing is especially worrisome. I would suggest you guys quite flying immediately until STL can make his determinations.

Here is a video we made a couple years back. It was performed exactly how they do it in the industry. I think JR even supplied the banner, which is a scale "billboard" type aerial banner. My friend who flew the banner is a JR rep. Call them and ask them if they have them for sale or however they distribute them. I can find out where he got the banner if you want, they are made a certain way to fly aerodynamically. Don't try to do this with just any old sheet, they have to be made a certain way. Google for more info or if you want email me and I can provide you with information on aerial banner flying.

I have some more videos of it if you want to see it. The plane is equipped with a quick disconnect, again, just like real aerial adveristers have just in case there is a problem with the plane.

PS - No weapons were used in the making of this film.

Here is the drop. As you can see when the banner was pretty big. About 15' x 8', maybe larger.

The golf ball thing I believe isn't even true. We have had golfers hit balls into the field before, but we've never had a plane shot down by a bad golfer or anything. And we've also never had a midair incident with a full scale either, and we've been flying there for 10 years.

STL Pilot, I'm not interested in towing a banner behind my plane, but something more...comical to say. I don't want to post exactly what I'm planning to hang, because I know there are members here that are members of the flying club I go to, and news and rumors at our club spread like wild fire (guess that explains the golf ball story).

Then why did you post it in the AMA forum? AMA forum is dedicated to peace and love only. You know, white doves and all.

STL,

That video was absolutely horrifying. I can’t believe you guys took such risks. You apparently have no reverence for our great hobby.

I would expect that if a line got entangled in a control surface or damaged a control rod it would cause the model to go out of control and would be very dangerous. Such stunts are detrimental to the hobby. You are probably one of the reasons AMA’s membership is declining…well at least by one.

Just how did you get AMA to approve a stunt like that?

I think I need to fire off an email for clarification.

Isn't it appalling, the complete and utter display of disregard for our safety standards STL has for our hobby? I willing to bet he is not an AMA member because he cannot conform to our organization’s regulations.

Hope they werent using one of them Lockup On Glitch radios in that Car-ward Dive

But I cant imagine the dangers of having a string from your plane.... I mean, sure COMBAT can do it, but they have PDFs that make it safe.... just doing it without another plane chasing your plane isnt Combat therefore it cant possible be safe in any way shap or form untill there is a PDF for it..... two completely different events only blind ignant foos with no common sense or responsibity would see it otherwise

How anyone can compare combat to that is amazing..... Combat has a PDF.

Right Kid.

I guess we need to start a thread to come up with some roolze for pulling banners so that a pdf can be made to keep us safe. Maybe STL can give the particulars that he discussed with AMA before he got the ok to pull off such a dangerous stunt.

yeah, that is a great idea.

well, unless that OK was via a phone call, then it must not have happened because someone on the internet claiming to get a phone call from ama is not to be trusted

Come on Kid, You take two frames out of the whole clip and change the whole thing. If you watch the whole clip the plane isn't "diving" at the car, it is making an approach to pick up the banner......... Banner towing isn't any more dangerous than some of the crap non-thinkers do at any field. Maybe they should'nt be flying at what looks like a park, but that is the only thing I would criticize.

Banner towing is MUCH safer then glider towing and not even in the same league as firing projectiles at RC airplanes.

If you guys think it was so bad, call the AMA for clarification, let's see you put some action behind your words. All big men with no action.

Also that road is the road leading into the RC park, a designated flying site, not a road.

Wow, all I asked was for a clarification on the regulations regarding hanging and towing objects with or from an RC model aircraft; not to start a heated debate on whether its safe and whatnot. Going on another tangent, is it just me, or is the font different and smaller?

What made you think you were going to get a simple answer without any static? After looking at some of the other posts, you got off easy. I heard somewhere that it is easier to explain what you did than to ask permission to do it..

Are you sure that road... is the road that leads into the flying site or is it not a road that leads into the flying site. Your going in circles again...please stop.

We are trying to get you some regulations going so you can organize your stunt. STL seems to be moving a little slow right now... please be patient. Try reading the threads about paintballing and you might see his agenda is pretty full trying to get roolze and regulations in place to organize that activity. Although many think he is Peter Pan, STL is actually a mere mortal…it will take time.

STLpilot has got to be joking, its absulutely something a idiot would do.
I think the video has been doctored, its just too crazy.
And to set that kinda example for kids ,entering the hobby.
Wheres the justice , wheres the law, I ask??

why do you keep talking about Weapons & shooting stuff?

This is a thread about Towing things behind a plane....
LCS & I are talking about the safety & rules & whatnot, and all we get from you is guns nut stuff
....get out of the guns guns guns mindset STL!

DroneP-
Looking at that frame, as I said, consider a Glitch Lockup with it on that course & the car where it is. The plane was turning base to final, and sweeping its heading right thru a car not far enough away.
