Exclamation Seagull Ultimate 90 problem

Hi Everyone:

I recently purchased and build this plane from horizon hobby.

I have re-enforced the front of the plane with 30 min epoxy and fiberglass since I have a Saito 1.50 4stroke engine in the nose [which is all the way in the front of the engine mount]

It's fully build and now when I go to balance it. I've encountered a serious problem!

The manual says that the plane should balance out using the center rib of the upper wing the CG should be between [12-15cm] or 1/2 inch.

Using this range I got to put 3pounds and 2 ounces in the engine mount to get it to balance out straight. And add to that weight the 3600 mah Hydrimax battery I have in the firewall.

And I'm using lead ballast weights [used in fishing] to achieve that amount to just balance the plane out.. [ Before I melt it to size]

I called horizon a few minutes ago and after being on the phone with the representative, which he told me I would just have to add weight till it balanced out.. He said he would be e-mailing seagull to see if they had another idea or to verify that the CG is the right one??

I ask for help guys to anyone that has flown this plane or has it..
  1. Did you have to add so much extra weight to the plane?
  2. Did you use the suggested CG?

I've included the pics of the plane and also the container showing all the weight to melt to put in the plane. [ in the engine mount]

Do not have an answer as I am not familiar with this model. But I would recheck and confirm the balance point. I does not sound correct to me.

I agree, that does not sound correct. What I would do if I were in your shoes is to look up where the CG is located on a Goldberg Ultimate and then set according to that info. The Goldberg and yours are pretty much twins.

I just looked it up, try setting it to 2 1/4" from the bottom wing LE at the fuse. They actually give a range from 1 7/8" to 2 7/8" at that same point. With 2 1/4" I think you would be plenty safe.

thank you for that information I'm going to consider I am in the process of measuring the wing comparing to the Goldberg CG to see how the handles.

already in my measurements I already determined that I'm only going to need approximately 12 ounces of lead so I just melted that I made it into a form is it to install into the fire wall. And will see how it goes of if I need to add more?

I'll be remeasuring I'm checking that balance and the new CG then I will be testing it out on this coming Tuesday if they wind and the day is good.

I have 11cm – 13cm from the center of the upper wing. I have much lighter Saito 125 + some small 1.2 NiMh for ignition in the nose box. Receiver/Servo 2S 2000 Ma/h LiPo close to firewall inside the plane – that’s it. However, the plane has a spacer between the engine mount and the firewall to push engine forward for balancing. The thickness of the spacer is about 3cm. No more any extra wait in the nose.

I have one with an OS 1.20 4 stroke and did not have to add any weight to the engine area. The manual says, and I have balanced mine, about 13.5 cm back from the leading edge of the top wing measured at the middle rib over the fuselage. That's 5 - 3/8 inches back from leading edge. Did you confuse cm for mm?

Night Scream

Back to basics: 12-15cm is not 1/2 inch. You are reading cm (centimeter) as mm (millimeter). 12-15 mm is about 1/2 inch. cm is about 10 times more.
