How do you think an Evolution 26GT will work in this plane? It is almost the exact weight and HP of the OS 160...

GMAN, what did you have to use as far as standoffs or other parts in order to mount this engine? I've still got an OS 1.60 on mine, but am seriously considering going gas, and I like the looks of this engine you've got. tell me more!!!!

A guy at my field crashed this plane and was going to trash it so I asked if I could repair it. I had never seen it in one piece so repairing is a little more difficult. The front was smashed up to the landing gear plate, wings and tail are all fine.

Can someone please take and post some pictures of the inside up by the fuel tank as well as the radio tray area and engine box. I think i know where every thing goes but i am unsure of how the motor box was connected to the frame. It looks like Ply stringers ran all the way up to the box.

Thanks in advance.

I have the manual and it has helped. However what i want to make sure of is how all the stringers attach thru the two bulkheads prior to the engine box.

I have uploaded some crash pictures to show what i am referring to.

I've got the cowling and wing off mine out in the shop right now, and I'll be working on it this afternoon, so I'll take a few pics and post them for you.

Lowleviflyer I used alumanum spacers worked good but I think you could use wood. the motor fit good its plenty full. I will take some pics first chance I get and post them. The motor seems to run very good. I have 8 or 9 flyts on it so far

now i see why that guy wanted to trash it. you have your work ahead of you. did you say everything else is perfect? personally if that was mine i would just buy a new fuse from greatplanes and be ahead of the game. just my 2 cents. you would be surprised they are not that much money. i think 120.00. any way when you are done let me know how it flew. i flew mine today. it flys awesome. it flies like a trainer.

Aww where is the fun in that? I did look at a fuse kit but I thought it would be more fun to repair this one. And yes EVERY thing from the landing gear back is perfect.

I have too many other planes and am not in any hurry to get it in the air. I just like the challenge. Brush up on some skills before I build my giant Corsair.

I will post on the crash/rebuild thread when i get everything ready to repair.

Can someone please measure the length from the former that the wing pins slide into to the front of the engine box?

Hi Guys,

I've been flying my Extra w/o spinner since snapping the bolt on my second stock spinner. It looks like both TruTurn and Dave Brown sell 3 1/4" aluminum spinners that will fit and look great. But, they are a lot more expensive than the stock GP spinner.

It looks to me that the spinner bolt on TruTurn and Dave Brown is 10-32 (4.8mm) vs. 4mm on the GP stock spinner. Is this really enough larger to make a difference? I swore off the stock spinners after the secon done broke off, but the price is enough lower that I'm tempted again.

Are the more expensive spinners really worth the cost?

Could I just be doing something wrong to snap the spinner bolts? I don't think they have been too tight or loose, but this is my first "larger" engine.

Thanks,

Carl

Just got flight number 6 through 8 today on my Extra and like you guys say, it gets better and better. My 1.60 is running very well with the Slimline muffler and larger fuel tubing. Vertical is awesome. Don't know if it is unlimited, but it is way higher than I can see effectively. One of my favorite things to do is low fly byes at full throttle. It's loud and big! Guzzles fuel like crazy (running 5%). Getting comfortable now with the size and power. Fun.

I would agree with the prevy post as well...
I have rebuilt fuses and they just end up heavy and you end up missing something that is broken and you didn't notice it untill it caused you to loose the entire plane, engine and electronics....
Just not worth it to me.... Plus, all that time to fix it....
I have done it... would never do it agian...

thats what i was i trying to get at in the previous post. challenges usually end up costing you big in this hobby. nothing is done like the factory.. thats for anything you buy.

You guys are right about the issues with repairing it. After a repair they do come out heavier and there is always the risk you forgot something. I don’t think I really plan on flying it I just want to see how the repair comes out. As I stated before, this is more about the challenge to fix it than anything. If you’re careful you can fix almost anything properly and usually for less money than replacement parts. That being said this plane may be too difficult to rebuild for my limited and rusty skills and I may end up with a fuse kit but I will have fun on the way to that decision.

With the advent of ARF’s I think we all lose some of our building skills. I started in RC in the late 80’s and as you all know if you wanted a plane you had to build it and I have built many of them. I personally have not built a kit in years because ARF’s are too good and too cheap to compare with building a kit. I recall being excited and nervous on my first maiden of a plane built from a kit. Now when I assemble an ARF and make the maiden it is a little boring, because unless you’re a complete idiot it will fly just the way it is supposed to. That being said I find I miss the challenge and time spent building which is why I want to repair this one first then build the TF Giant Corsair kit I bought 3 years ago. Don’t get me wrong I love ARF’s and think they have been great for the hobby and the growth of the hobby. I own many ARF’s and have enjoyed each one. I guess as I get older I want to slow down and get back some of the enjoyment from the hobby I think I have lost.
