Hay Pugsley, Tell us more, how does it fly? how much does it weigh, that 40 shure looks small almost perfect for that plane. how well does it hover and fly going strait up?, anyway im still waiting on my Patty wagstaff but im about to call off that purchase and get the 1.60 instead.

Supertiger don't do it! Having built and flown both I say get the Patty. Of course that is if you are going with a 50cc DA,BME,ZDZ or Brison. If you are going smaller than the Soucy is fine but the larger wing and the fact that you don't have to rest it on it's back to assemble at the field make the Patty a better choice.
They are both similar excellent quality, airfoiled tail section, fully sheeted and a built up wing, good hardware packages (except for tailwheels). The only other advantage of the Patty is the canopy being already done and nicer. I think either are a better value than similar offerings from Kangke, Lanier or anybody else that actually has planes in stock. For under $400 I havn't seen a better value on the market.

Basinbum, i hear what you saying, ive already payed for the patty but its not here yet and its been 7 weeks now. thats the real reasion im canciling my order from Chief aircraft. Do you still feel the same about the Patty if i used the zdz 40, i already own a brand new one sitting on the shelf ready to go.

After 7 weeks I don't blame you. Try Tower and look around for a discount code and you might get it at the same price.
How much does the 40 weigh compared to the 50? It might not 3D as well but for scale aerobatics I bet the 40 would be fine, check with anyone in the Patty thread that has the 40 (I know a few do) and see what they say.
These two planes are very similar but the Patty has advantages, especially when you go gas. With the OS 1.60 the Soucy is an excellent plane at a lower overall price.

RE: Great Planes 1/4 scale Gene Soucy Extra 300S
I know this probably will not be a good thing to say....but I think the Gene looks SO MUCH better than the Patty. The Patty looks more like a Corvette than an Extra....
The build quality of both are excellent.
The ZDZ 40 looks like it was made for this plane. I have not flown it yet, but I think it will be pretty good. The Patty would not be very good with the 40 IMHO. I have flown a Patty with the OS 1.60, Saito 1.80 and the BME 50. The one with the saito and BME fly really well, so I am not sure the 40 would work as well. I think it will be perfect for the Gene though....

Nice pictures Red Devil. I'm getting ready to order mine from TH in the next few days. Going with the OS FX 160 too! I'll post pictures when I'm finished with assembly. Happy flying[8D]

What about a Sirius charger and or a voltmeter with a built in load or a C-volt or a Voltwatch or an MPI voltmeter/heavy duty harness?
Coreless servos use less power than 3 and 5 pole motors. The Hitec 5945 servos have a lower current draw than standard 148 Futaba servos.

RE: Great Planes 1/4 scale Gene Soucy Extra 300S
I flew a Yellow Aircraft 72" wing Extra 300L 5 flights a day with a 1200mah pack and futaba 9202 servos. I was not doing 3D just aerobatics.
You should monitor any pack you buy. A heavy duty switch harness with a built in voltmeter, or a C-Volt or A hobbico Volt watch would be good to keep an eye on the pack during the day.
You could have a large pack and have a servo bind or some other current draw that could suck it down in minutes. You may want to think about a field charger that is good for your batteries like a Sirius Charger that is not too fast. It is best to monitor your packs and check before each flight and field charge if needed.

RE: Great Planes 1/4 scale Gene Soucy Extra 300S
This plane is bulit strong enough to handle a DA50 but it would be grossly overweight. Stick to a OS 1.60FX or maybe a Moki 1.80/2.10. A saito 1.50 or Enya 1.55 would also work to keep the weight down but would have much less power.

RE: Great Planes 1/4 scale Gene Soucy Extra 300S
Has Anyone stuck a Saito 1.80 on the nose of this plane? Im going to be ordering one soon, but im not sure on motor choice yet. Ive seen the video with the 1.60FX on it, and it seems to have pretty good vertical, but not as much as I would like...

Sorry to tell you but the saito 180 will not give you as much vertical as a 160 fx, the 160 can spin an 18x8 at over 8K, I run a 17x8 on my 160 fx and it will spin that about 9k. I have flown planes with both engines and can tell you for sure the OS is the way to go.

I have the os in mine and the vert is virtually unlimited. Go with the os but if you use a pitts style muffler you will need to crimp one of the exhausts to get enough back pressure to pressurize the tank. BTW its a teriffic flyer.

RE: Great Planes 1/4 scale Gene Soucy Extra 300S
Hello all,
I haven't bought one yet but, I have a few questions about the Great Planes Gene Soucy Extra 300S so I can make sure that it all goes ok when I do get the plane.
1. Has anyone use the slimline pitts muffler on the O.S. 1.60 with this plane? I someone has, did you have to do the same thing that you have to do with the Bisson pitts muffler (crimping or plugging one of the extensions for more back preasure)? Also which muffler do you recommend. Granted the Slimline has a smaller can compared to the BCM one and it is more expensive. I have used both of them and I have determined that I like the Slimline better of the 2. I just would like some input on this matter please.
2. Is there anyone that flies at a field that has a paved runway? If there is how does the Great Planes Extra 300 land on the paved compared to the grass?
3. I have read the all of the 8 pages of questions and replies but all I got was more questions about using the ca hinges or the robart hinges. which hinges do you recommend.
I would appreciate the feedback from anyone.
Thank you,
rcflyer
