Yep, I saw it at the Chicago Hobby Show, very nice. Looks just like the .60 size but it has split flaps and wing fairings. 80" WS, supposed to sell for $499.

Hello,
Does anyone have an opinion on whether the WM Spitfire (60 size) would make a good third plane? My current second plane is a Sig 4*60 with a Saito 100 and I am comfortable with it. Given my second plane, and a decent level of proficiency, do you think that it would be reasonable for me to handle the spit?
WM is reportedly coming out with an 80" version of the Spitfire. I like the idea of going with a larger plane, but at a reported 15lbs, it looks like a lot more to handle than the 60 size and I would have to use a significantly larger engine, perhaps even a gasser, which I have no experience with. The WM Website says the 60 size Spitfire is aroudn 7.5 lbs, which is probably not much more than my 4*60. Anyone know the weight of their 60 size WM Spitfire?
Thanks,
Travis

Mine came in at just a hair over the advertised 7 1/2 lbs. with a Saito 1.00. You should be OK for a third plane but it will be very different than your 4*60. Takeoffs and landings are a bit more tricky.

The WM Spitfires look great here and it will be on my list for X-mas along with a Saito 100. I noticed that you guys mounted the Saito 100 inverted with the muffler sticking out the port side of the cowl. How does this work in practice? Did any of you consider a different muffler arrangement, where the exaust would exit at the bottom of the cowl? If so, do you have any thoughts or recommendations on how to do it?

There really is no other way to setup the stock muffler on the Saito. I have seen others use just a flex pipe from Saito without the muffler but I don't know how well it works as there is no way to run a pressure line to the tank. I think Slimline makes a pitts muffler for Saitos but again, I don't know how well it would fit into the cowl of the WM Spit. There isn't much room from the exhaust opening of the Saito to the left side of the cowl, about 3/4".

The saito 100 works just fine inverted and using only an elbow style header(like the earlier 91 models) without muffler. This will give your Spitfire a cleaner appearance. Just make sure you still run a vent to your fuel tank. Like others noted, with a Saito 91, mine required a lot of nose weight to balance. Also, I landed mine with half flap. The plane was more difficult to land with full flap. I never tried landing it without flaps, but from the sounds of others on RCU, it might be better.

You can order a muffler from [email protected] that will allow you to position your muffler at any position you wish.
