HI
CAN ANYONE TELL ME THE PROPER CG OF THIS ARF. THE INSTRUCTIONS SAY 9.25 IN. FROM THE TRAILING EDGE AT THE ROOT. I HAVE FLOWN IT AT THAT CG AND IT SEEMS TAIL HEAVY. WE HAVE SOME PEOPLE FLYING IS AT 10.25 IN. FROM TRAILING EDGE AND IT SEEMS TO BE MUCH BETTER. IF ANYONE WHO FLIES THIS PLANE CAN TELL ME WHAT THEIR CG IS IT WOULD HELP.
THANKS EDDIEO

I have flown this plane with a gas engine at 8.875, 9, 9.25, 9.5, 10, and 10.5. I am presently at 9.25 and may go back to 9.5. Anyone who can fly this plane at 9.25 or lower is DAMN good. When I had it at 8.875, I did my first tail first landing. It was very invigorating! I would recommend that 9.5 or 9.75 to be a good CG to fly this plane.
Remember, the above is IMHO

THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION ON THE CG, MY GILES WENT IN ON THE SECOND FLIGHT BECAUSE IT WAS TAIL HEAVY, COULD NOT PULL OUT OF A DIVE IT SNAPPED WHEN I JUST TOUCHED THE ELEVATOR. IT WAS BALANCED AT 9.25 IN AS PER INSTRUCTIONS. I CALLED GP AND WAS UPSET, I HAVE BEEN IN RC FOR 9 YEARS AND KNEW THE PLANE HAD A BALANCE PROBLEM. THEY TOLD ME TO SEND BACK SOME OF THE PIECES OF THE THE PLANE SO THEY CAN INSPECT IT, AND 4 DAYS LATER I HAD AN NEW PLANE DELIVERED SO I FIGURE THE CG IS INCORRECT. I AGREE WITH YOU IT SHOULD BE BETWEEN 9.75 AND 10.25 IN FROM THE TRAILING EDGE.
THANKS EDDIEO

lennyk,
If you have experience with 1/4 scale or aerobatic planes then you should not have a problem with the CG being at 9.75 inches.
funfly2005,
I have two version of this plane. One glow (engine has been sold) and one gas. Using my 9C radio, I have adjusted the elevator halves so that the plane will not snap at low to medium rate deflection. At high rate the plane will still snap. What I have found is that on my glow version the nose drops when I stall at slow speeds and with the gas version the plane tip stalls. I think this has to do with how it was assembled and/or built at the factory. The first plane was better quality than the second one.

I have my CG set per the instructions (9.25" from TE) and she handles nicely no tail heavy probs, actually need to move back a hint more to get completely flat on Blenders.

Greg Cothern,
You made my point. If you can do a blender or any other 3D maneuver, then you are not the typical pilot who purchases the GP Giles 202 ARF. You are more of an intermediate or advanced pilot.

Geistware, actually I have only been flying for about a year and a half. The Giles was my first 1/4 scale bird. I do have what helps me a bunch, a couple of guys in my club that are very good pilots. They are always glad to be beside me in case I get into trouble and that affords me the ability to do these advanced aerobatics. They are my moral support, hehehehehe. But seriously on the CG I do feel and have without qualm flown by myself and the landings at this CG are not more than one would expect. Again the Giles was my first larger scale bird, previously I was flying a GP 40 Extra 300S. By all means do what makes you the most comfortable, until your more aware of how your bird flys, then move the CG back. Oh do make sure you check the incidences and engine thrust angles as some have been off a pretty good amount. I believe there is a large thread about this topic in this section started by PAULINPHEONIX.
Hope this helps.
