I've got a YS 91AC, but I'm thinking of selling that along with a OS 61 FX to finance either a YS 110, saito 180, or a OS 1.60..
A YS 110 would be plenty and fast for this plane. Plus, it's the same physical size as your YS 91AC, so it would fit nicely inside the cowl. If you are looking for speed and awesome sounds, then the 110 is your ticket. The Saito 180 would also work, but it has much higher fuel consumption and doesn't spin as high of an rpm as the YS 110.

F1race79, generally a true statement, however, the significant carbon wing tube is just behind the spar / gear box location coupled with a PAIR of locator (anit-roation) dowels, I feel that this set-up looks pretty good.

Let you know in a few days when it is flown from our grass strip.

Bob:

The inside diameter of the cowl is approx. 8-1/4" give a 1/6th here and there.

Hi Bob:

I see your in Cleveland, I get over there quite often in the year as we have a plant on Quigly Road (Air Products) and in addition, I visit frequently with my good freind at Sierra Giant Scale gear, Tim Mayher in North Royalton, Oh. (just south of 80 on 71.)

It is worth noting that Sierra is putting a Punematic gear system w/ 1/2" struts togther as an offering for the RB. I don't have any fruther info than that.

I called Spring Air yesterday, and the gentleman I spoke to said that he is expecting his RB any day. He is planning to offer a complete package set of retracts including struts for the RB.

Vamp......

I'm over on the west side a bit. I work in Amherst.
I am familiar with the company, but I have not had the opportunity to meet Tim.

The new spring air gear interest me too. Their struts do not mount on 'stub wires', they actually attach to the retract trunion block.

This is similar to Robart newer 500 "RS" series. However, Robart "RS" series can take 7/16" diameter oleo struts whereas Spring Air can only take 3/8" oleo struts.

Well, I already have the SA-303's which are 3/16" stub wire mounting and will use just to get the RB flying and plan to change out to something better as pointed out.

Thanks for the info.

Hello out there. I was wondering on the retracts subject, what other pneumatic retracts would work in the RB, such as the Robart 605? and does anyone have a web site for Spring Air, or a place of purchase from the web? Thanks

Any standard size 85-degree pneumatic retracts will work. I would not go with the Robart 605's because their plastic housings tend to crack under a semi-hard landing. Go with all metal, RoboStrut ready Robart 551RS.

Would you go with the straight struts or the offset ones??? (i noticed vamp has got the straight ones) Also do the struts come with the axle or do you have to buy that sepperatly?? Also I can't seem to find it anywhere onthe robart page...but i'm guessing you use the 7/16" struts (440 series with the part# 66**)

It's too bad Tower doesnt have the 551RS (oddly they do have the 551WS)...As it would be nice to save some money with their current specials.

I'm just wondering if I should hold out for the Spring Airs specifically for the RB or go with the Robarts (plus, who knows how long it's going to take for them, and with only 1-2 months till the snow flys..)... I'm thinking the Spring air setup will probably be cheaper....but maybe not.....Looks like the way Vapmp's doing it costs about them same as just buying all robart stuff....(and from looking at the prieces of the Sierra giant Scale stuff....They would probably be the most expensive way to go) What do ya think??

Attached is a picture showing the front view of Rare Bear sitting on the ground. The struts do splay out a little toward the ground, so you could go with 90-degree retracts.

Tower does carry Robart 550RS: [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAYN9&P=0]CLICK HERE[/link]

I would go with offset struts since the full size has offset struts.

Anyone put a Bear in the air yet?

My LHS has one in stock which keeps talking to me from up there on the shelf

Interested to hear how these things fly.

Thanks for that link to Tower Hobbies on those 550RS retracts, putting them on order next week. Hopefully I can get the RB going by next month, can't wait to fly this bird! One more thing Richard, what struts will work with these retracts. Not to familar with air retracts and struts.Thanks.

Go with Robart 7/16" diameter oleo struts. I don't know how big the main wheels are, but Tower only sells offset struts for 3-3/4" - 4" wheels:

* [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXES99&P=0]Robart 663L Left Strut[/link]
* [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXET00&P=0]Robart 663R Right Strut[/link]

For smaller wheels, you would need to go with 661's or 662's if you want 7/16" diameter struts, and those have to be ordered directly from Robart. Tower does carry 3/8" diameter offset struts for 3" - 3 1/4" wheels.

So you can go with the smaller 3/8" struts along with the 551rs ?? (nevermind on that... closer reading on the robart site says yes)

Seems like using the 1/16 smaller struts probably won't make that much of a differance (strength wise) but maybe a little bit of weight savings (yea!).

About the offset.... What's the pros and cons with the 85deg vs 90 deg? Is it to make up the differance in the planes dihedral to get the stuts 90 deg to the ground (it's gotta be now that I think of it)?? Anyone know what the Thunder tiger mechanicals are ??? (85 or 90)

I Should have my RB on friday....hopefully sitting on my doorstep when I come home from watching the REAL DEAL fly at the air races!

I just gotta get the retrracts sorted!

I read somewhere that Rare Bear took on damage, put the crew fixed her up, ready to roll. Rare Bear took 2nd in qualifying and Dago Red took first.

BTW, the difference was only by .8 MPH

The retract angle is the angle of the strut from being fully retracted to being fully extended. If you want the struts perpendicular to the ground, then use 85 deg since the wing has some dihedral. If you want the struts to angle slightly outward like the picture of the real plane shown above by me, then use 90 degree.

Hi guys, I'm about two thirds finished on my RB, any find that the supplied fuel tank doesn't fit where they tell you to install it? even after you fit the resupplied ply bracket?? I'm finding its not long enough to get the tank in!! other than that the kit has been an absolute joy to assemble.

Nightcook, you are correct. But since TT suggests to put in the BOTTOM of the fuse significantly below the Carb. centerline, it makes little difference.

I have fabricated and installed a small tray to put it at the proper height to the carb.

On the O.S. 1.60FX, the needle assy. is remote and so I mounted it in the right fuselage exhasut opening so that no holes where needed in the cowl and yet the needle can be adjusted easily.

My RB project is complet and when I get my "legs" tomorrow, I will put them in and and hope to test fly on Sat. or Sunday. BTW, I will be recieving the Sierra Gear already drilled to accept the 7/16" robo-strut and so I will be using these in palce of the Spring Air 303's I had laying around. After the RB has been flown and the performance of this gear / strut marriage comfirmed, Sierra will make them available as they currently do have components ready for assy.

I will post some addtional pic's this evening of the completed engine installation as it turned out very well.
