Hi guys,
Just bought a Piper Cub 6ft wingspan plane, see here...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...tem=5915581726
...it recommends a .61 size engine, I have one but I want to go Electric with this kit, its massive but is this possible?
I'm working to a relatively low budget, but in general what would I need in terms of power? The Speed range seem quite cheap, would a Speed 800 be adequate in terms of power? I don't want this to be a slow crawling ship, would be nice for it to have some power!
Got 3 x 9.6v 3000mah NIMH batteries, would one of these be adequate to power the beast? or could I even chain up 2 or even 3 of them to give long flights?
Appreciate your help!!
Cheers, Ash

Costs? LOL!!!! Your better off running glow in there. 1st, this plane is probably gonna be a beast. Well over 7 to 8 pounds I imagine.
Your looking at bare, and I mean bare minimum 200 to 250 dollar brushless. Now comes some more $$$....ESC....Probably 70 amps or so. Thats almost another 200. So right now, you got 450 bux into this. I can get an Evo .61 two stroke at my LHS for $99.
Also, you will have to reconfig that batt pack of yours into like 18 cells. That may be too much weight so you will have to go lipoly. And guess what? Another big dollar item!!! I'd say around 200 to 300 for just one batt pack.
Electric powering planes is very doable and less cost to an extent. Once you get to a certain size, your better staying glow unless your related to Bill Gates. Take that money your gonna spend and get a Saito or OS 4 stroke.

Bahhh well it seemed like a good idea at the time, hehe!!
Thank for your replies peeps, shame as I would like to stick with just electric, but its the small size of the planes that kind of puts me off - do you know a maker of larger polystyrene models?
Cheers, Ash

If you want a large Cub, the page Cub is wonderful.. I've got about 2 hours in the kit and need to build the wing and rudder then cover.. VERY fast building kit!

Ash, why don't you go with an e-powered sailplane or hotliner? A Nike 2 would be a nice fit with an AXI brushless in it.
I bought one of those Omei 2000 EP's off of ebay (I stole it for $45) and put in a jeti 30/3 brushless in it. Man does it go!

Yeah would fancy one of those actually, I want one with a mahussssive wingspan though, without having to spend a lot! Something just powerful enough to get some altitude, then just glide for a while!
Any ideas, or anyone in the UK got one for sale.
Cheers, Ash

Another question!
I have an old Precendent HiBoy, recommends 30-40 engine (from memory), would a Speed 600 (that I've just won on EBay) and a 9.6v 3000mah NIMH get it into the air, or not? if not then without going Brushless what motor size would be sufficient?
My Aerobird Xtreme's 540 feels powerful enough to pull it, but perhaps not quite into the air.

Check modelairtech.com for large electric motor/reduction units. They use the 18v dewalt drill motor to power one of the motor/reduction units and the cost is about $106 and should not have a problem with you 6 ft cub. I am told the unit works very well. The brushes on the motor can be replaced. Dewalt has a very good design and is very efficient close to brushless performance without the expense.

Check out the new FLY RC magazine for a review on the Hobby Lobby "Lift Off" It's powered by an AXI motor and utilizes a foldingprop. Take it up to alt. the point here strainght down, the reviewers clocked theirs at 113 MPH! Then level off for a pass over the field, point it 45 degrees up, roll back on the power and your back to alt. to do it all again!
