Default U-Can-Do 46 Engine Size?

I have just ordered a U-Can-Do 46. It should be in before the end of the week. I have read alot of posts about engines and the U-Can-Do. Is a Saito 100 too big for this type of plane? Thanks.....

I don't know if the 100 is too big, but I am flying mine with a Saito 72 and love it. I bought the 72 before the Saito 80 came out, so I might by the 80 if I were to do it again, but the plane is pretty light and the 72 handles the plane beautifully. BTW: I also am using a 14X4w APC for the prop.

im using the same setups as 'hookedonrc' and it really works out well. i bought my saito before the .82 was released, but the .72 has lots of power to do just about anything. the extra power of the .82 would just make it more fun to fly. you can put something like an os 46fx or ax in it, but it wont really do 3d well....more of a pattern type setup. make sure you glue the horozontal stab on with 30min epoxy. i only used 15min and it actually came loose. standard servos are good all around. they recommend a high torque for the rudder, but i think something like a futaba 3004 would work. for maiden flight, make aileron rates half of what the manual says until you get used to it.

Thanks for the information about the Saito 100. My U-Can-Do 46 has now arrived. The manuel says not to go above a 70 4 stroke and not to use a prop with over 6 pitch. My Saito 100 uses a 14 x8 prop. Am I asking for trouble, or will it work well for 3 D? thanks...

i wouldnt use a saito 100 because of the extra weight. a 70 size 4 stroke is plenty with a 14x4w apc prop. you could get away with the saito 82 because it's the same specs as the .72 with a larger bore and more power. my 72 pulls the .46 u can do into the air in about 20 feet.

Saito 100 will be fine!! Nice engine i have one on my 7.5# giles and it flies it real well I would think in the Ucan do 46 it would be awesome. My brother has the Ucan do .60 and he has a YS 91 in it and it definatly doesnt have enough power for it. Hes going to swap it out with a 1.10. Try to get a small pitch and large diameter prop. Maybe a 16X4 I have a 15x6 on mine but its not a 3D plane. On my morris knife I run a 13x4W. I dont think the weight difference in the .82 saito to the 100 saito will be significant enough to have an effect on the way it flies but the power increase will be awesome. Some guys fly the 60 size u can with a saito 100 personnally I cant see how. at 7.5# it just does a good job IMO. funny thing is they recomend the saito 100 for the 90 size funtana @ 10#. I can see how that plane even gets off the ground.

I'm using the Saito 100. Using a 16x4 wide APC. Don't use a 14x8 you will most likely tear it apart.

Really a 16x4W? what RPM are you getting? I get about 9600 out of my 15x6 and was considering trying a std 16x4 but not a W. But if I can get a fast throttle up and a decent RPM I may try it.

I have a Saito 100 in mine. Awesome combination! I wouldn't have it any other way! Rusty

A friend has a Saito 100 in his UCD 60 size with an APC 16-4W and it turns right at 10K RPM on 15% fuel. The weight difference isn't an issue. According to Tower and Horizon's website's, the 100 is actually lighter than the OS FS70 S2.

I also have a NIB UCD 46 and am trying to figure out what engine to power it with. My choices are: Saito FA 100, FA 72, or an OS FS 70 S2, or a Magnum XL-70RFS.

Most of the UCD 46's i've seen are coming out tail heavy so I am going to wait untill the airframe is complete to see what it'll need as far as balance.

therotund1: Not sure about other engine combos and what other planes come out like, but on mine, I only needed 1/4 oz on the tail. I did put the battery forward under the motor and am flying the Saito 72. I could have moved the battery back a little, but by doing so, I would have made it tail heavy because the battery would have to had to move behind the landing gear block.

Gotch'ya hookedonrc, we've got 3 of them at our field and 2 of them needed a ton of weight on the nose. 1 has an OS 50SX on it but the other has a Magnum 80 4 stroke! The third also has an 80 Magnum and didn't need any significant amount of lead. Of the other 2 I know about, 1 has a Saito 82 with no lead and the other has an OS 46FX and needed a lot of lead. It's weird! I'm thinking maybe a wood density issue or maybe even some assemblers got real happy with the epoxy on the tail surfaces... I dunno... I'll see how mine turns out. Even the "heavyweight" ones seem to fly great so, I'm stoked!

joeb102072,

I run my Saito 100 on the 16x4W backed off to about 9500-9600 rpm on 15%. I don't like to go over 10k on a four stroke.

Thanks for all the info.
I put a Saito 100 on my U-Can-Do 46. I did not need to add any weight at all. CG was well within the range per manuel. I am using a 14 x 6 prop. Works like a charm and I have all the power +. Problem is - I am only flying the plane with about 1/2 throttle. It has been pretty wind at my field, but even with wind, the landings are smooth and easy. Take offs are no problem - a roll of about 10 feet and up she goes. Tracks very smooth and flies easy. Still have a problem with vertical fly - seems like I have one control service off a bit - seems to roll left- but not much. I am very pleased with this airplane- Again thanks for your imput.......jb

jb - Yea, check all your surfaces for alignment then maybe try some right thrust, say 2 to 3 degrees.

Def small for a saito 100 and as far as a 3D prop goes bigger diameter smaller pitch 15x4W ir 16x4 those would be my choices.
