I have a question or two for the guys who are putting .90's 1.00's and 1.10's on theirs. How are you hinges holding up? Have you replaced the stock metal ones? Have you done anything else to strengthen the airframe? Glass the center section, etc. etc.
I have a Webra .50 w/ an Ultra Thrust on it and it zips along nicely, BUT...Ya know the rest...MORE POWER!!!(insert Tim Allen's grunts here)

Boo! What you see here is the Saito 100 a WM .40 size P-51 running a 12/12apc. Runs very good.
I have also assembled a few other of these same planes for some friends inclued the Dago. For the fire wall, I just mix up a combination of epoxy and milled fiberglass from Greatplanes. Slop it on the corners inside and out for added strength.
After I join the wings I cut the monokote back from each side of the joint enough to add a strip of fine fiberglass cloth/epoxy. Then cover it over with the matching sticky back covering. It will be nose heavy and I put the weight I need in the back side of the airscoop.
Also is the retracts, remove them and slop some of that epoxy mix insde their on the retract rails for added strength. I do this on all my planes. I have never had a retract rip out of a plane. I even stuff one once at full speed froma battery failure. The retract stayed in place ripping out all the ribs around it.
One of my other WM P-51's had a G90 mounted sideways with a Pitts style muffler underneath. Also iinstalled a 61fx in a Dago. That engine is something to consider also. I also had put some tri stock under the horizontal stab.
Everyone of these has been one smooth flying plane after trimming. On the elevator, it has one control rod coming out of the plane and to one side of the elevator. I changed it so that I still had one control road but added another wire so that it splits up when it comes out of the fuselage and the rod goes to each elevator.

Hey, thanks again C H... I pinned the firewall when I built it, and put a fillet of epoxy all the way around the inside.
I had kinda decided on the ST .90 because I decided to use the Saito 1.00 in my H9 P-51 (believe you've got one of those too, don't ya?) but I also have a .61FX, or a Webra Speed .61 (decisions decisions)
Friend of mine has a Fitzpatrick .61 in his, but he's got a 13x6 on it, so it doesn't really go to it's full potential.(he's 70 something and he says it's fast enough fo him just the way it is)
I am going to 'glass the center section, and I think the split elev. pushrod is a good idea. Did you pin the hinges? I'm not sure exactly how they're held in there, ya know?! Are they all metal and will they hold up o.k.?
Gotta do something with the gear for peace of mind sake, and because we occaisonally fly off of grass...
I agree with ya about the way it flys! Mine is VERY responsive with the Webra .50, 'cause it's so light and the C.G. is on the recommended aft limit. It still "grooves" very nicely though, and when I fly it everybody stays down and watches 'cause it's an impressive looking plane. (especially when I make a pass right down the runway WFO
)

If you go with the G90, start with a 12/9Apc. that worked for me but I am also at 5000ft so a 12/10Apc may also be good. If you go with the 61fx start with an 11/7 or 11/8. You need to remove that gear and slop epoxy all around the inside of that area to include th backside of the mounting rails.

When I built the plane for my buddy, I installed an 11/8APC but after several flights, he went with an 11/7. thing is remember our altitude is 5000ft. An 11/8 APC may work for you. But were are talking P-51's here. Any other plane may need someting else. Good Luck

I use the YS .91FZ in the Dago Red....What a sweet plane....[sm=thumbup.gif]
You have to keep it in pretty close, because there is not much difference in the
color schemes on the top and the bottom of the plane. I replaces the retracts
as well....they were to soft. [

Dave, The one I assembled for my friend was the Candyman. I put a 6inch wide white stripe near but not on the end of one wing from leading to trailing edge (On top of the wing). Made all the difference in the world on keeping track of it.
I keep forgetting I just got a digital cam . Check back in a few and i'll have a picture of my little Ms America with the same stripe.
