I am building mine with the Robarts and a YS 110 and Keleo exaust. Each one of you have helped with your posts and Larry, you have about the worst luck I have ever seen, hope mine is better. One last question...which is the best prop to run on this plane with the YS 110?

I flew her for a long time on a 14x7 3-blade Graupner or a Master airscrew.

Most recently I was using a 16X6 APC 2-blade.

While both took the engine to @9500 rpm..the APC had a definate advantage in vertical pull and straight and level speed.

Thanks for all the kind words......

I have my Miss America assembled sitting in my shop awaiting the arrival of her engine. It's a YS 110FZ. She should be fast. I'm a firm beliver in more power than necessary. That's what the throttle stick is for. More news when the engine arrives, supposed to be here on Oct. 28. Can't wait.

How did you strengthen the firewall? Did you just epoxy around the corners or did you add some triangle stock first?

I laid up fiberglass cloth and epoxy.

As many times as I bounced her in..the firewall was solid as a rock.

more power than necessary usually brings on flutter...especially in the warbirds. Saw a new Corsair litterally "explode" the tail feathers off last weekend at about half throttle with a YS 90 for power.

JaLan: I'm with ya on the power thing. With a YS 110 in her, you might want to consider strengthening the horiz. stab. with either a carbon fiber rod or piece of hardwood stock. I have a Saito 100 in mine and I haven't had any problems but, my Spitfire has a YS110 in her and the power difference is incredible. I put a carbon fiber rod in the stab on my spitfire and have not had any problems. The 110 flies it straight up like a space shuttle. YS engines rock!

Thanx for the info. That is one nice looking spitfire. I can't make out the brand on the 3 blade prop. What brand and which are you running on the Miss America?

Thanx, the monocote is a good idea, I'd like to put the carbon fiber rod in but I'm not sure I want to tear into the nice looking cover job already on the plane unless there is a technique to do it that I don't know about.

Thanks Larry, I will definitely do some work to the firewall. Does anyone have any suggestions for 1st flight. What should I expect, any bad manners etc., and what about set up for landing?

you have to fly this bird in.if you have a sim with a mustang on it practice with it. but bring her in with some pwer dont float it in,this is a problem that alot of people have they try to bring her in like a trainer ( float it in ) give it some pwer until you get a few feet off the deck and then pull it down to 1/4 throttle as she starts to settle a few inches off the deck then pull the power down and she will set down on the mains and let it roll out. I've had a lot of help from the jet guys I fly with on this matter. I've had only 1 or 2 WILD landing due to not payin attention. Good luck

I use mostly Graupner's and an occasional APC.

I have Real Flight and have been flying it alot. Haven't practiced much on grass which is what our field is, but have been using the fun fly airport with paved runway. I have a hard time landing without bouncing. It will probably be more forgiving on grass. I have a great planes profile P-38 that flies great but lands like a lead rocket. Falls from the sky at less than 1/2 throttle and comes in hot. Tried the flaperon route but it didn't work well at all. Anyway, the point is I am used to landing with the throttle so I hope it won't be too much trouble for me. Thanks for the advice.

What size prop are you running. I use APC on almost everything but my bipe. I went to Graupner's web site and looked around. I don't know if our LHS can get that brand in or not. I know I haven't seen any there before.

I'm a Graupner fan too. My LHS doesn't carry them, so I get them here:

http://www.hobby-lobby.com/grprop.htm

They cost a little more, but they are real stump pullers!

Thanks, I will try the Graupner's. I'm waiting on the YS110 to come (Oct 28th, I hope) and I want to see what they recommend for prop size and RPM. Sure don't want to over rev and mess something up.

I fly off a closed airforce base 10,000 feet long and 150 feet wide. Just do a couple of practice runs at it and see what feels better for you.Good luck[8D]

Larry,
I put you right up there with all of those who have taken the leap. You have given of your time, effort and funds to follow what you felt was right. By doing so you set benchmarks for all to follow...I am sorry that you gave up on MA when you have worked so hard to make her what YOU wanted.

Hey guys, I noticed on the instructions that the plane could take a OS .70 four stroke...(I have one laying around)I understand that it's on the low end of the spectrum of power, but I am wondering if it'll be ok. I'm not looking for a speed demon here, just an adequectly powered airplane. That'll put around the sky and do some decent aerobatics. Thanks!

Forget any 3-D stuff with this plane. A slow roll and giant loops are what this plane is all about and looks great doing them. Stirictly a scale plane. The 70 will be lugging for sure.

JaLan, don't bother with flapperons on planes with outboard ailerons. It will only give wash-in to the wing and promote tip stalling. Also the MA, mine with a SA100 is quite a floater you don't have to land it very hot unless you add alot of weight to it. It lands as well or better than any tail dragger sport plane and is easier than any warbird I have ever flown.

I have to agree about the way this bird lands.very easy and with an ooohhh from the crowd. as far as pwer with a four stroke I would not go lower than a 100.I,ve got a os 120 stroker in mine but I like the thrill of SPEED

I know that many of you have changed landing gear due to the problems with the ones that come with MA. The question is..sraight or off-set? Robart states that the off-set is correct for the P-51, any problems with tire clearence or the gear sitting flush when closed?

Thanks!
