not if you shim it on the backside of the gear. that should do it. I just changed mine out to robart mechanical. very stout and only 40.00.good luck on your flights

RE: New Miss America P-51... I saw one today
I went ahead and shimmed the rear base of my landing gear like many here have said to improve ground handling. Wow, big difference! When the plane lands, it sticks - it use to be a little light and want to nose over on landing with any little bump but this fixed it.
My question however is, does anyone seem to need quite a bit more elevator when landing? For me, at least today, when the plane slowed down and the gear down the elevator just didn't seem to be very effective. Once I thought the elevator servo went out or something had broken. The plane balances fine but I was thinking with the gear down and moved forward it might make it nose heavy with the gear down.

Shakes...I had that same problem once and found the elevator gearset stripped with a standard servo. So check your servo. The manual says "standard servos," don't believe it. Go stronger on the rudder and elevator.

I'm using 60oz torque servos all the way around, I'll check it though. On my last flight today it was the worst. I don't know how much I pulled but it certainly felt like it was more than should be required (at least half!) and in my opinion it should have shot the nose up.

I saw the 51 at a LHS last weekend, I must say I was about to buy it until I noticed just how cheap the Retracts Looked! Even the Inner Wheel Wells was cheap looking compared to the rest of the plane!

I checked out the servo, seems fine. I ran through the servo test with my radio to see if it was slipping any gears - nothing. I also applied some resistance to it with my hand, moves just fine.
I set up the throws on this thing very conservatively so it may just be that I don't have enough throw at low speeds with idle prop wash. Just seemed odd that it didn't really seem apparent until I dropped the gear. I'll raise them on the elevator some and see how it effects it. Today I was landing much slower than I have in the past.
What throws are you guys using on the elevator? What H9 recommends? I initially thought they were too high in the manual but with my experience today they may not be.
As far as the retracts, I'm using spring air retracts- landings are wonderful with the oleos. No slop, strong, and the wing is so much lighter without the servo and pushrods.

For landings I have used high rates with about -70 expo. on mine to help prevent nose overs with good success. I do not usually fly with high rates on elevator. My low rates on elevator is about half the recommended. H9 and most others recommend way too much elevator. So much so that if you use a marginally powerful engine with reccomended elevator, you may risk tip stalling it on maiden. I always stay at the ceiling of recommended power to prevent this and also just because I hate slow/sluggish flying planes.

Yep, about half recommended elevator is what I've been using. I did not switch over to high rates when landing as it has not been an issue in the past with the plane.
Since the gear mods though..here is what I think is happening...
With the gear shimmed and more forward when down, it makes it just a little nose heavy - not noticeble when under power due to the effect of prop wash and speed but when you slow it down and bring the throttle back there isn't enough air moving over the elevator to be very effective at low rates with very little prop wash.

I use the recommended settings on the control surfaces...so far, no problem, once I found the stripped servo...and I was using a 60 oz servo on the elevator also. Futaba 9202 now.

This is what I'm using on all control surfaces. I've wondered if I'd regret buying them...

thats why most of us have upgraded the retracts. little bit more to pay but for this bird it is well worth it. this plane just rocks the sky.and as far as the wheel wells ????

I personally take binoculars to the field so I can pick out things like this, nothing worse than a model that doesn't look good in binoculars and these darn wheel wells really show up when you're zoomed in. Heck, with so many people using telescopes these days I'm embarrased for my wheel wells to be seen.

After about 12 flights these Factory Wire Struts are bent/broken and it's time to replace them w/ some beefier ones. I'm looking at a new set of Robart Struts but am no sure on what to get. This isn't my first plane but my first Warbird/Retract Plane. If I buy the Struts do I have to also buy new Mech Boxes ? I want to keep the Retracts Mechanical and not Air Powered. Some of the Struts have an Offset for wheel diameter...whats the diameter offset strut that will fit ?

RE: New Miss America P-51... I saw one today
Hello all. Once again YS has delayed shiping my 110FZ so my MA is destined to collect more hanger dust. She's complete except for engine. The latest ship date from YS is some time in December. 2005 I hope! Sooo frustrating. Only consolation is I'm getting alot of building done on my giant scale F8F Bearcat. It's my first attempt to build strictly from plans, but seems to be going well. Fuse, stab, fin elev. and rudder complete, about to begin the wing. It looks great. I hope I don't have more plane than pilot!
