Phoenix Giles & Sukhoi which engine

I have a Phoenix Giles 202 and a Phoenix Sukhoi that I bought last year when they were on sale at Tower Hobbies. I have not flown either, matter of fact I started to assemble the Giles and the Sukhoi is still in the box. I would like to get one of these assembled and ready to fly over the winter. I was originally thinking of going with the Magnum .52 two stroke which I would have to purchase. I do own a Magnum .61 two stroke that I don't have on a plane right now and I'm wondering if this .61 is too large for either plane or should I just stick with my plans on buying the .52. If I could use the .61 I could probably get both planes up and running this winter. I can only afford one new engine at this time. I would like to hear from anyone that is using a .61 size on either plane.

Try looking through this thread, people tried various engines on these planes.

I did a search before I posted this and didn't have very good results. There were alot of " well I ordered the Sukhoi todayand I plan on powering it with" but not many people coming back later to tell how their planes flew. So if you have been flying these with a .61 size engine I would like to hear from you.

gnirwin,
I had a Sukhoi that had a HB .61 PDP motor in it. Can you say FAST. With a .61 in it, it makes a great pattern plane. It has a very high wing loading with the .61. It likes to be landed with a bit of speed. What motor are you planning on using? The Cowl is big enough to hide any .61 out there.
By the way I lost my first one to a engine failure, but i got another and will build it this winter.

I bought one at the same time also...in fact I got both of em. The Giles is the one i am flying presently. OS 70II up front with a 13x6 APC moves it along at a pretty fast clip. Lands a little hot, and likes the power on for most manuevers. Spins good, rolls super fast and pretty axial. Knifeedge ok.
I had an Magnum XLS52 in it at first, but after some problems with trying to get it to run reliably, and a couple deadsticks...lucky both times, it doesn't glide to well, I put the 70 on and it was a different plane. Flys as if on rails. The 70 is a fair match for it. Vertical is not unlimited, but pretty darn close. With a different prop, it might be better. As it is, loops are as big as I want.

I have a Black Horse SU31 which is the same as the Phoenix SU31. I had it with a TT61 and its a waste of time, I used to have one with a TT46 which gave me limited vertical. The TT61 gave me more vertical but the wing loading went sky high. The TT61 was 10 oz more than the TT46 ... then I needed 2.5 oz on the tail to balance her out. All in all its about 13-14 oz more. All that to throw a 12x8 prop only? Landing had to be about 5-7 mph faster if not she will stall, also she will not float in like she used to on a 46 2C.
For more enjoyment go with the Magnum 52. Oh yes ... with a TT61 there is NO unlimted vertical. I think the best engine is a Saito 82.

61 would probally work fine in the Sukhoi. A tad heavy on the wings, but its a fairly beefy Plane, and a tad larger than a normal .40 size. Here is the Phoenix Sukhoi in my Hangar with a Saito .72GK. Just right I think, but this post is about your Plane and not mine.

I wanted to add that tiANci is probally correct about it not being the perfect choice, and I did not want to imply in my previous post that this was a perfect setup. I am just saying that you could probally get by with the .61 if your flying skills are good until you come up with a better combination down the road. I have an old stick .60 with a .46 Evolution in it. It is not the right combo, but the Plane is flyable with a little skill on the sticks. And after some of my more top priorities get taken care of, I will be finding a better engine match for this Plane. Sometimes you just make due with what you got unless your flying abillities limit you to having to have the perfect match to avoid disaster.

Mine came out slightly tail heavy with a K&B .61. The K&B .61 is almost exactly the same weight as a standard .40-.52 engine and about 8 ounces less than the magnum .61. Flew great with the K&B until the aileron came off.

I have the Sukoih. I started flying it with the TT 46 pro and it just did not have enough power. I replaced it with a ST 61 and the plane came alive. It is on the heavy side, but a pretty good performer. I think I was only able to get a 10 ounce tank on board.

I had a GMS .47 in my SU and it did okay. .. but I wanted more thrust. I put the saito .72 in on 15% fuel, and what a difference it made! Not unlimited vertical, but very good vertical and it was very thrusty. Snaps had great authority after putting the .72 in. I have a .82 in a box now, and you guys have me thinking!
Even better, I'm sure.

I think a .61 will do fine.
I started out with a .46 FX on first few flights. I did well but I felt the power was low. I took it out and am now flying it with a MVVS .77 and mini pipe set up. I like big props and this thing turns them no problem. I'm using a 14x6 and it has tons of pulling power and will accelerate going vertical. I also ran a 15x4 before and it also ran good. Just a bit close on ground clearance.
It is a little bit heavier but no different nasty habits. I used the same engine mounts and havent had any problems yet. It fits nicely in the cowl since the cowl is a pretty good size.
