Default I wouldn't advise it !!

You can get new ones from Lanier now.

John, sorry for not getting back with you.

I hope the Citabria flew well.

My Decathlon had a flame out with the Saito (becoming a common thing) and I knocked the nose off. Man, this is a tough one to fix.

Great posts!

I'm just getting started on my CG Decathlon. I'm putting an inverted YS .91 in it. Glad to hear this has turned out to be a good ARF. I was hearing horror stories about how RC versions of the Decathlon were really hard to handle on the ground.

I've got a couple of Hitec 605's for the tail and I'm planing on using standard futaba 3004's on the wing. All on a 6 volt batt. Any comments about that setup?

I'm also using 1/4 scale hinges on the control surfaces (already started that part, no going back!). I've already been told to use toothpicks as dowels to keep them from coming loose. I'm planning on sealing the gaps as well.

Keep the building tips coming, I need all the help I can get. This is only my 3rd. All ARF's. I might be interested in the carbon-fiber stuff as well.

Default Carbon Fiber Parts

Bozwth,

I didn't ever hear anything back on the carbon fiber parts. The plane will perform beautifully without them so no worries...

Does anyone know if parts are available from CG or their new owners yet? What is the latest on the CG anyway?

Thanks,

Default Decath

Whats this about the wing struts? Is this something I should address during the initial assembly before I have a problem in flight?

Thanks, Bozwth

Goldberg decathalon is a little under powered with Saito .91. The plane is a great flier but, can be a hand full on the ground. Once airborne it flies like a dream> I would recommend at leaste a 100 or better for best performance.

Ditto... Saito 100 would be a good power plant for the Decathlon. I have a Saito .91 and it just ain't enough.

I am putting one together right now. It will be powered by a OS 120 Surpass (pumped version). Should be plenty. Hopefully
So far I have nothing but good to say about the quality of this ARF.

Well, finally the nose is back to perfect with a new firewall. Get this, I called Goldberg for a new cowl.
These people want $50 for a cowl.[:@] I can buy a 33% ARF cowl for that.

Anybody got one ?[]

Hi, I have one under consyruction with (Sea Commander) floats. The flotes take a bit of effort, but worth the effort. I'm taking my time because I have only salt water to fly from....rust! I'm waiting for the summer to fly it. CKS

KAJ, I agree, the CG Decathkon ARF is about the best you can get. I'm putting mine on Air Commander floats and fly it off the ocean. That's all the water we have here. The floats are a lot of work and accuracy is a must; but worth every minute. I had a CG Cub (kit) on floats and in the salt water, the steering got all rusty....duh! Not so smart, so this time around, every thing will be plastic. I'm hoping to have it ready for June. I might even go for another one on wheels. CKS

Hey I am just getting back into the hobby so forgive my ignorance but will standard servos be good enough for the Goldberg Decathlon? I too have been eye-balling it myself...

I put on Hitec HS-5475HB digital sport servos at about $50 each. Completely unnecessary as standard servos will do, but what the heck.

Anyway, enjoy the airplane. It is pretty cool.

Hi Guys,

Hey CKS, Fed-X just delivered my Goldberg Decathlon AND, a set of GP 60 size floats

For everyone, I could care less about unlimited vertical hovering BS, I just want Scale performance and enough power to get off water and loop n roll. also would really like to have the engine totally inside the cowl, so to the question, how about the Saito 91.

Some of the earlyier posters stated the 91 to be underpowered, but those seemed to be the 3d guys, but for what I want, don't you think it would be enough ?.

Regards, Scott

Saito 91 is actually the largest recommended engine size. I have a Saito 100 and the performance is beyond scale. For what you are doing a Saito 91 is just fine. I only bought the Saito 100 because it didn't weigh any more and I figured what the heck. I have noticed that the Saito 100 seems to have a bit more vibration that the Saito 91s I've seen. Longer stroke so I guess it makes sense.

I've installed the Saito 100 inverted, as have a lot of other people (see some of the other threads).

Hmmm,

I had planned on going with inverted mounting, so that parts cool. The Saito manual shows a 91 at 93mm tall from crank center to valvecovers, and 110mm for the 120, so i'm guessing the 100 is around 100mm ?.

Measuring the cowl, it looks to me that the valvecovers might fit in or very close to the oilcooler moulding ?.

Looking at the pictures of the 150 install above, it seems to me that the 91 or 100 would have much less an impact in cutting out cowl holes ?.

Hi Scott, good for you, CG planes are great and the Decathlon is about the best. I have an ASP 75 for it, prop size has a lot to do with geting off the water or not. I might have to experimant a bit. Good luck with yours. CKS

Skypilot,

I think a Saito 120 or 150 would be total overkill for this airplane, but some people like overkill. The Saito 100 is a little taller than the 91, but weighs about the same. With the Saito 100 you can do a lot of non-scale maneuvers with the airplane. Most people have been very happy with that combination.

Picked up my new Saito 91 today for the Decathlon The wings are already done and mounted. So onto the struts. Got my father building the floats for me, and those are coming along, so, so far so good.

Question, What have you guys found for the C/Gs sweetspot ?............
