Default Goldberg Decathlon

Finnz,

Great looking Decathlon! I see you were able to mount the engine completely inside the cowl. Gotta admit they are fun to fly!

Default Goldberg super decathalon

From reading all the responces in this thread. The Goldberg Decathlon is becomming very tempting. I like the idea of split wings. And the aircraft is light enough to fly on a .91 - 100 engine.

I have thought about purchasing a full size Decathalon or Citabra for some time now. You can find some low engine time hangered planes for a resonable price.

The Goldberg may push me over the edge. I think I will call my local hobby shop and see about ordering one.

Thanks for all the photos and information. Hearing modelers opinions makes the purchase easier.

I plan on putting a FX .91 Two stroke in mines. Does anyone use this engine in this kit? What type of vertical would I have? What the best prop to use?

I would have to say the 91FX will have little or no vertical performance. 10 pounds is a bit heavy for it. It may actually hover, but it will be at 100% throttle to do so. BUT, It will fly quite nice, much better than scale flying. The 91FX is pretty much topped out at 9 pounds. IMHO of course. I had one on a 8.5 pound Ultimate and was very dissappointed. 90% power to hover (10% nitro, 15x6 TF prop) very sluggish pull out. No transition on a 15 inch prop. No hovering on a 14 inch prop.

I originally flew mine with a 91 fx,when I could get the motor to run right,it was more then enough motor for the plane, definitley out performed the 91 fourstroke.

Default Goldberg Decathlon w/Saito FA-100

Recently purchased a Goldberg Decathlon to put my Saito FA-100 into.. Anyone have any recommendations for engine mounting, etc? Would like to have it enclosed in the cowl if possible. Any other assembly tips are welcome also.. <grin> Thanks..

I had a Magnum .91 mounted inverted. Worked great. I lost the plane a couple of weeks ago due to radio interferance. I sure did like the plane.

Default Decath with a Saito 150

Well, I am about to make myself subject to some expected OVERKILL statements but,

I happen to have a Saito 150 and I am going to stick it in the Decath.

I will let you know how it performs.

Default CGM Decathlon Carbon-Fiber gear

Sending my Goldberg Decathlon stock landing gear to one of the carbon-fiber landing gear manufacturers to use as a template.. Not sure of the final price but I think it will be around $35. Anybody else interested in this? (Price might drop for more volume) I'm doing carbon fiber landing gear, wing tube, and possibly tail wires.. Along with Sullivan Kevlar Rudder cables. I'll post the weight difference when the project is finished.

Default Decathlon with Saito 150

Well, I took her out for her maiden flight yesterday.

All I can say is that this is one of the best flying Decathlons I have ever flown. What a sweet bird.
Tracks so wonderfully.
Absolutley no rudder input on take off. With the 150 up front it literally yanked her into the sky with authority. Very little trim needed for hands free flight.
Loops and rolls are on good straight lines with the obvious rudder input. The ailerons need a lot of throw to have this plane snappy.
Landing was a breeze.Naural nose down attitude on approach with the slightest of flare to plonk her on the mains.

I think I am going to really enjoy this plane on any day.
I am glad I have the 150 in it. Verticle is as you can imagine. In fact I wouldn't want anything less in it now that I have flown it this way.

Negative: Wing struts are crap in design and want to keep coming off. Need Sullivan clevises with the retainer clips all round.

Hey TheEdge,

Did you have any trouble with the cg balancing with the 150? I might repower mine from an FA-100 to something larger in the future.. Also, is your 150 horizontal or inverted? Any pics?

Brent

ps: Birddog, I'll let you know when my CF gear/tube shows up and let you know what I think of them, along with the weights..

Yes the motor is inverted with a remote glow attachment.
The CG is spot on, only because I had to place my Battery pack way back in the fuse. I cut out and added an access panel for it.
Well worth doing in my opinion

Hey Bob...very nice job on the Decathalon. Tomorrow (Sunday) I take the Citabria Pro up for it's first flight. I've been making a few mods and additions. Wish me luck
John
