Have you ever had a plane you just could never really get confortable with? This is the way it was with me and the GP Giles 202 ARF. The plane flew very very good, with plenty of power with the OS 160 and never did snap when I didn't want it to, but I just never could get comfortable with the plane. Don't ask me why, it is just one of those planes that you just can't really seem to like.
So today I traded the Giles, engine and on board radio gear with a friend of mine for a WM Super Stunts 60 that has the Saito 180 on it and high dollar high tech 5945 servos all the way through and a 10 channel receiver.
This may seem strange, but the person that I made this trade with owns both Hobbytown Hobby Shops here in Austin and is a very good friend of mine. It's as if we both own both planes, so I am just storing a different plane than when I woke up this morning.
Don't flame me too bad, but this just seems the best thing to do since he really liked my Giles and I didn't. I really enjoy flying the Super Stunts with the 180 on it and have put it thru rigid testing and it is holding up very well because it is slightly modified to handle the extra power. I know this is a wierd thing to do, but I think it worked out for the best for both of us.

Good swap.

You got a terrific engine and flight pac, and a plane that you actually enjoy, instead of one that always feels like it should belong to someone else.

Good on you for being able to see that instead of pushing a potentially bad situation and crashing a plane you felt poorly about.

Think I'll learn a thing or two about your post.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike...it was one gotta have planes because I have always liked the Giles lines but when I flew it I just felt as if it was flying me and I was not having any fun. I am not saying it is not a fun plane but it just did not fit the bill for me and besides me and Doug are always flying together so it ain't like I will never see it again.
The Super Stunts is so dang mucg fun to fly I just had to have one but it needed more power so we stuck a 180 on it and it is just a blast to fly. With this much power you would not beleive some of the stuff it can do like stop and go verticals all day long.
I have some work to do on it to get it lighter in the rear because I went a little overboard when I re-made the tail. I had to add 2.5 oz. to the nose anf the c/g they wanted it at seemed to aft and it was at nearly 50%. I don't know if it was a fluke number or that is where they fly it at but mine is at 33% snd flys great.

Looks like I will be needing a new avatar.

Believe me when I tell you I love all the Ultra/Ugly designs of late.
So much that I now have all the Ultra Sticks..been flyin' the 120 for a year or so...then I got a 40 nib for safe keepin'...just last week I swapped out for the US 60.

When I got the 120 when it first came out, I had the Super 7 Futaba....then found out it would'nt take all the programming I needed...so like any good hobbyist, I bought a Super 8, and sold the 7 the next day online...

I gotta tell you, I have never had so much consistent fun, day in day out...wind blowin' or dead calm on any other plane, ever.

If you have a capable radio, may I suggest adding the quad flap arrangement to yours.....buy a second wing, enlarge the control surfaces and go quad.....properly programmed, ailerons linked, crow, flaperons, you would be hard pressed to find a more enjoyable, exploring different flight configs, ever.

Just my humble opinions, use em' if you like.

Mike...here is a pic of the modified tail section...it came out a bit heavy so I am building a new elevator out of sticks and no sheeting this time.

I felt that way about a Cap I had. I always felt behind the plane. I was never able to be a step ahead. I crashed it at least 6 times and then gave the repairable airframe away. I've flown a dozen or so other aerobats including other Caps. I had never felt that way before, and I never have since. I was very uncomfortable from throttle up until I killed it before returnung to the pits. I've had servos develop a mind of their own while flying and wasn't as concerned as I was flying this plane. It was a sick feeling, and I wish I had come up with a solution like yours. Maybe someone else would have found the real problem. Good Move Dude!

I wish I could have said the plane flew bad but it did not, as a matter of fact it flew good but I just can't put my finger on what it was that made me feel the way I did about it...strange!

The WM SS .60 dlys great and with the 180 on it's nose....well need I say more :~} my biggest problem it prop size. A 16 is all there is room for and that got trimmed to a 15 after 10 or so flights so I put a 15/8 on and fly the hell out it>.
Here is aileron servo...Hitec digi 5925 MG.
These are really good servos...cost to much tho.

You made a good choice with the trade, besides you can always take it up for a flight or two thats the nice thing about trading with a flying bud. I have the Giles and love it so I wouldn't do it myself but what ever you feel comfortable with is the way to go. I had the same thing happen with a Global P-47, from the minute I took it out of the box I didn't feel good about the plane it flew fantastic and I never had a problem with it but it was just one of those thangs. I still have it but it will be a hanger queen unless someone wants to trade me for it. Gotta wonder why that happens??

I think you did well in the trade. IMO it doesn't matter how much you lose or think you lose on a trade, I have traded and sold a few planes I just didn't feel comfortable with. It beats crashing the thing and walking away w/ a radio and motor.

As long as your happy, who cares what other people think.

I have got 1 plane that I absolutely love. Its a MS Menace funfly w/ a 48" wing. Out of all the planes that I own and have owned, this is my favorite plane of all time. I paid $67 for the kit. Took less than 1 week from the time I got it delivered to flying time. I wouldn't take $300 for the plane alone. And I have flown the living snot out of it.

I would have to think very, very hard if somebody offered to swap me a 1/4 edge for it. I know they wouldn't offer it, but I would have to think about it very hard if they did.

I have some emotionial ties to it. This is the first plane I was able to hover consistantly and do a rudder touch.

I let other people fly it and they HATE it. I couldn't give them the plane.

Default Know when to fold 'em.

I had a .40-sized Sukhoi once. It was *very* pretty while sitting on the ground but it never flew right. I've written about it here already; links follow.

The Attempted Murder

The End

Even after the dam thing tried to kill me I still gave it another try. Stoopid.

I was lucky in that the airframe suffered all the damage - the radio gear and engine were fine and soldier on to this day in my Somethin Extra.

My point? If you have a plane which you're thinking about retiring for whatever reason - it doesn't fly right, bored with it, etc. etc. retire it! Wait too long and you might just end up retiring an engine and some servos....
