Hi John,

My cousin Ed Berube did about 28 years in Naval Aviation. He retired as Master Chief. As I understand it, he did some time as Command Master Chief on the East Coast. Wondering if you guys ever crossed paths? He's about 57 now.

You're lucky to still have your WWII Vet Dad. I lost mine 4 1/2 years ago at age 82 and 11 months. That was a GENERATION the likes of which this country will never see again.

I don't have any connections with Military Aviation. I was a Snipe in the Navy, my Dad was Army Infantry, but I have always loved the Aircraft from that era.

I sure hope that this flies as good as it looks.

Bob,
It's good to hear from a fellow Sailor. I did serve with Master Chief Ed Berube, although I can't recall which tour (perhaps VP-44). I spent most of my career as a P-3 Naval Flight Officer on both the east and west coasts.

I think you'll find the P-47 flies just as good as she looks. I hope to get mine out again this weekend.

Jerry,
Mine came in at 9.2 lbs with the OS-91, air retracts, oleo struts, and an onboard glow driver/battery. It was a bit heavier than the manufacturer spec's, but flew great.

I used Robart 551 (85 deg.) retracts and 660 (7/16" straight) Robostruts. The retract rails needed some modifications to accept the retracts -- filling/re-drilling the screw holes and grinding to widen the rails in spots. I cut the Robostruts to fit, and trimmed the wheel well covers out to allow the struts to seat as flush as possible. I posted some photos of the retracts in earlier posts on this thread. Also, there are several other air retract options that have been discussed in this thread and each has its advantages.

Let me know if I can provide any more info.

John; Glad to hear the Jug flew as well as it looks, I have barely started mine, I havn't got the retracts from Tower yet, but I have the demensions; I think I am going to recess the rails and add additional build up underneath rails, and not bother with the wells at all, this should allow the gear to retract flush and build different gear doors that will seal off the gear alltogether when retracted; close off the interior of the wing where the gear will retract into, that the plastic stock wells would have normally done. a bit more work but I am in no hurry, I enjoy tricking out these ARF's, I think I am also going ahead and add flaps, for the cool scale look, after looking at the plans and instructions from the 60 size Top Flite Jug it should be an easy addition. Doug,
I am anxious to see how your Jug turns out. The recessed retract rails will add to the scale appearance and the flaps will be a nice touch as well.

BTW...I received a set of the Robart gear door brackets by mistake (I had canceled the order, but apparently too late). I think they'll work well with your idea of gluing the brackets to the gear doors. The bracket instructions call for gluing a short piece of aluminum or brass tubing to the doors and bending music wire running thru the tube to connect to the brackets.

Doug and John, I just ordered Robart scale wheels for this model and also my Top Flite kit.

They look like they might be a bit thinner than the regular model wheels/tires and they'll look cool.
Bob, like John said.....there's a bunch of retract options, I'm using the Robart 511 "economy" series
with the 3/16" wires and straight Robostruts and they look darn good as well. There are pictures earlier
on in this thread that dasintex posted for me.

Andy;

I went ahead and got the Robart Diamond tread Scale wheels as well, I went up a size to 3 1/2", I may change them later if there is room for the 3 3/4" size, closer to scale; the 3 1/2 and the stock ones that come with the HP P-47 are 1" wide, the 3 3/4" size is 1 1/8" wide.

With everyone changing out the stock Hangar-9 retracts for pneumatics someone should have a set of stock units they would be willing to part with at a reasonable price. I love the units on my P-47 and want to install a set on a scratch built plane. Anybody getting rid of their stock units please...

I have a brand new in wrapping complete set of Robart 511RS with robostruts. These are the same ones I used on My thunderbolt.
THey aren't bad and are more then enough for the p-47. I will let these go for 180.00

YOu can check back on this thread on Page 5 & 6 to see my install. While they aren't the 551rs they are fairly resonable priced.
As for the stock units,
I can sell them with pushrods for about 15.00

Santa Claus is bringing me a P-47 this year. Ya, I know the guy well.......

As far as the new Saito 125 goes. That is the engine I am going to use on it. There is no problem putting a larger engine on a plane if you know how to use the throttle stick. If you are a WOT flier I wouldn't do it. How oftern do full scale planes fly WOT? I am a high altitude flier so everything I have has a bigger engine. A 125 at altitude is more like a 100 at lower altitudes. I'm sure that flying this plane with a 100 in it at 7200 feet with 100 degree plus weather would not be fun. The only problem with doing this is that you will void the warranty, so do it at your own risk. Always make sure that the airframe is up to the job as well.

The other thing that I like is the ability to swing a larger more scale-like prop. I'm thinking of a 3 blader for the 47.

I have a Saito 120 on my H9 Corsair and I think it is powered just right up here. The other thing I like is the big prop disc it has. It looks so cool, especially with the white tips on the prop.

Infact, a 4 stroker not at full throttle sounds a lot more like a big scale engine....

THanks Scrambo, I'd definately keep at it with that Magnum. I spent months trying to get that inverted set-up to work. I heard everything imaginable...use a 4 stroke plug....use a glow driver...use blah, blah, blah. The guy at my local RC store (RC country in Sacramento), told me that "it's all about tuning......glow drivers don't solve tuning problems." Well, a friend with 30 years using these things got it running perfect...good enought that I can bounce my tail hovering (yeah, I broke it but landed) <G>

After 4 months of trying and almost turning back to my brushless motors and liPolys, I finally have a great running plane like the rest of the guys at the field. The greatest barrier for me to entering glow from electric has been tuning. Period. I hear my new Saito 125 won't be any easier....I'll call my friend day one.

THanks for the advice on the screwhead.. will do.

Jerry, I'm using a SuperTigre G75 with a Top Flite header and in-cowl muffler. This is the same set-up I'll be using in my Top Flite P47 Gold Edition . You can't get the header for the G75 anymore but the older header topq7925 will work with longer bolts. which is what I am using. This arrangement should have all the components within the cowl. The only openings I'll need will be for the exhaust stack, the needle valve and the fueler. I'm using a remote glow igniter, not a remote glow system just a Dubro remote location for the glow igniter. I have this arrangement.......the glow igniter........in my H9 AT6 and it works slick. I have had no heat problems to date.

Randy, thanks for the info....I'm going to be using an Evolution .61 in mine. I don't think the stock muffler will fit so I have to find a different muffler.

It's sitting on the hobby shop's shelf, I just need to get to the point I break down and buy it.

The 120 has been great for the last two years and never a dead stick landing. It will idle down to about nothing and I haven't needed to install a glow driver or do anyhting special. The same with my other 3 Saitos. I hope that the 125 runs as good as the 120. You just have to learn the engine's habbits and how it likes to be tuned.
