I believe the info from you other owners of this bird has, to this point anyway, saved mine, and here's why. I had been working on mine for 3 weeks doing my normal build, beefing up rear wing mount ,glassing and adding bracing to engine comp.,upgrading fittings, new & stronger tail wheel, and so forth when another pilot from our club turned my on to this site and i started reading about the wings. I tore the covering off the bottom and sure enough , broken ribs, missing sheer webbing, soft balsa,no spar in front of the ailerons and, well,it was a mess. All mods and repairs were made , center was glassed ,wing was balanced, covered with ultra cote red and white checker board( i love this stuff). 1st flight.......all was going well until the engine quit (moki 2.10 ),my fault, too lean. 1st landing was a dead stick. Landed on its feet but in tall grass. No "apparent " damage but needed checked over. 2nd flight.........after a normal take off and a right turn i went inverted , came across the runway ,rolled upright, turned left and ,still at 1/2 throttle, encountered massive flutter( humming bird wings)but the thing didn't come apart! Both servos now blown, i landed with elevator and rudder safely. Turns out the first dead stick damaged a servo and i didn't catch it. I replaced the 88oz nylon gear servos with 155oz digital metal gear JRS. 3rd flight........all went well till i tried to land with my idle a little too high. Advanced to go around and she quit again. yep... another dead stick, this time with no altitude or runway. I tore the gear loose. Easy fix but it wouldn't have survived the flutter on the 2nd flight had it not been for the repair to the wing as a result of warnings i read in this site. Thanks again. Hope i can return the favor.

Default I too Listened!!

Ram3500; Two years ago I purchased this airplane. I did a thorough search, and like you pulled off the bottom covering, fixed and epoxied, tri-stocked, shear webbed, etc. where necessary inside the "broken" wing. I also did all the standard beefing I do with ARF's, and have a ball with mine. I have a G-45 on it, as well as 87 fun filled flights. I hope you have as much fun with yours as I have. Perhaps I'll see you around next summer at some fun flys. I was out of town last year, when the one at the land fill south of Canton was held........

Ram3500, I had the flutter problems you experience and they almost cost me the plane also. Destroyed one 605 aileron servo, and damaged the other. I made all the fixes you did on the wing, but I also trashed the undersized control hardware Sig provides. I went with all Rocket City style hardware and custom built threaded 1/8" control rods. I also used Northeast Sailplane's hing gap sealing tape on all control surfaces. I now have HS5645 aileron servos and the plane is flutter free, even at full throttle dives. The control surfaces have become super effective, even on lo rates.

I went back and forth with Sig over the wing problems with this ARF, and after four months of waiting for a new wing I expressed my lack of patience. I was offered either the Sig 300XS, or the CAP as a replacement for my SU31. I chose the Extra and it arrived in two days. It is just about ready to fly.

vince, glad to hear that their are other " survivors". sure gets your attention doesn't it. I didn't mension it,but i also upgraded the linkages and sealed all the the gaps with clear monocote before the first flight.I do this as standard procedure as it sounds like you do also.My su31 is the one pictured at the White Knight Wing Protectors web site (www.wingprotectors.com). Thats also my pitts. Love those covers. Check them out. What engine did you use? later, ram3500

I have been flying mine also, but I think the Fox 2.4 is just a tad undersized for this plane. It would be much happier with a 3.2 I think.

picked up a gp pw extra300 and a fpe 3.2 today. how about that combo for hover power? i considered changing out the 2.10 in the su31 with the 3.2 and dropping the 2.10 in the extra but want the strongest engine in the best 3d plane. which one do you guys think, su31 or extra 300s?

The SU31 might be the better plane, since all it's control surfaces are double beveled.

True. Wings are not dbl tapered on the extra 300. But, they are longer and will catch more prop wash in hover. Maybe i'll just have to save my lunch money and put a 3.2 in both planes.$$$$

ici, I also have both but am just finishing my extra and so no time on it yet. I'm interested in how the su31 stands out to you, having flown both. I put a F.P.E. 3.2 in the 300s because, after comparing the two airframes, it seamed the stronger one even after the mods i did to my su31 and, it is also slightly larger, although the su31 seems to have the edge in ground clearance for larger props. which prop are you using? Later.

Default Sig SU-31 Inflight Wing Failure

Well,... I see that I'm in good company on this SU-31 wing failure thing. My SU-31 suffered complete wing failure while in straight and slow flight! No banking, jenking, loops ect... . I fiberglassed the center section and made no difference. The wing separated about 6" out from center line. I have also been in contact with Mike Lee from SIG. Nice Guy! Between the rock and hard spot on this issue but doing the best that he can. I (and almost everyone else in our club that was present) was glad that the SU-31 lawn dart was just pointed straight down the runway and not towards any people or cars.

Sorry i didnt get back to u sooner.Im turning a 20-10 moki prop on both moki's.But as soon as my DA50 gets here im putting it in the patty.
As for the sig the moki keeps it light (13lb) witch make it very fun to fly.=)

Thanks for the info ici. Sorry to read about your "lawn dart" lose FalconWings10. Do you suppose there is some reason for these things being green that they haven't told us yet?
