Default H-9 Edge 540T Elevator Servos in Tail?

Anyone installed the elevator servos in the tail of their H-9 Edge 540? Did the plane balance out OK?

Could you describe (or post/emial pictures) how you actually physically installed the servos in the tail? I don't want to cut into the covering & balsa without some suggestions.

Thanks!

Put all three back there and with a Moki 1.8, I needed the 1200mAh pack located 1/2 between the wing and horizonal!

I'll try and get my neighbor to come over and take a pic or two for ya!

I know every plane is different, but i put all three servos in the back and my 1200mih battery as far back as i could under the canopy and i still came out nose heavy. I'm running a OS160 up front so if you put your servos in the back, you will be fine. I wish i had a picture for you but i don't. I thought i would chime in and let you know what your doing will work just fine.

I've recently done that also. Here's a few pics....

The first one, I made a filler plate, that gives a solid surface for things once you cut a hole....ALSO........the plate was cut and fit in BEFORE the hole was cut. I just made the plate fit nicely from within, and when satisified, wicked some CA in there to glue the plate in. You want to be careful to not get to much though. Go slowly with the CA, it will save your exterior. I just knew my ball-park for the hole, and made the plate to accomodate within reason.........

This is the hole location I used....the hole is cut from the outside obviously. Also...the pushrod ends up very close to the stock location as far as height. I used the original pushrod position(you can see it through the covering) to get this location. Just used the LAR(looks about right) method. It will work well where it's at though.

Everything else is done from the inside....

This is the view through the hole...you can see how the "filler" plate fits in. I used a sharpened pencil and some thin paper on the outside of the fusalage, took the side of the lead-pencil and "shaded" the outline of the cut-out. It transfered near perfect to the paper, that gave me a good starting point....

Here's the railing I used...It's 1/4" spruce hardwood. Notice I extended these past the filler into the original siding. This locks it into place. I just used 5min epoxy here....piece of cake...

This is the finished hole/mount...I added the small shim because with both servos in there, they are just a tad wide, and touch at the middle. The shim(1/8 liteply) took care of it perfectly...if these servos come out...I've got alot worse problems then loose servos...they aren't going anywhere....this hole set-up was done without cutting any covering except for the servo hole too.

..for the wiring....use the reversing y-harness from Horizon...EXRA325 I think is the part#. That is the easiest, most inexpensive reverser I know of, and I've used them with good results previously. Unless you have the capability to mix it in your radio...I've done that too, and do have that in my radio...Futaba does take a minimum 8ch reciever to do so though with a modern Tx like the 8UAS, or the 9C(which is what I use).
I installed a very light tube in the fusalage...right down the center to the bottom of radio compartment to run the servo extension....Don's hobby has it, and it's just for running wires like this, about $10 will get you enough for several large planes.

Now......the hor/vert stab install is a whole different thread...I was disappointed with the fit from the factory...it just wasn't going to work out of the box. The book does mention some trimming..........it just doesn't say how much. That takes some careful planning to get a perfect fit(wood to wood with no gaps) of all tail components combined. Just take your time with it....you want good solid joints in there...it's very possible, but does take a touch to get it nice, you'll see what I mean. There's where a bit of building finesse helps...I'm going with my tried and true Moki 1.80 so I want a very good fit........good luck to you..I hope this helps.

Default H-9 Edge 540T Elevator Servos in Tail?

DGrant,

Thanks for all the details and pictures! I appreciate your time and effort. Here's my only problem, I already installed the stab/elev. I think, using your pictures as a reference, I can still figure a way to install the servos. I'll have to look at it closely, but if I cut both sides, then I wil have internal access to each side from the opposite side (sounds confusing). I'll let you know how it goes. Any suggestions?

The only way I can see to do it is to cut away the covering material...sparingly of course. I would cut right on the original cut out...where I put the "filler plate", and cut that whole bay out, and only that bay. That will give you plenty of clearance to do what I did. It will bacically be hidden under the stab, in the shadow anyways. That would be my suggestion, and what I would do if I already had the stab installed. Good luck, and yes, let us know how it goes.
