Default Texas Hurricane finally complete

Finally finished my Kangke Texas hurricane. I am quite happy with how this model came out. I was very happy with the quality of this model. I have assembled ARFs from Hangar 9, Great Planes, Vmar, Model Tech, Hobbico, Creek Hobbies and others, but this plane beats them all. The hardware was the best I have ever seen in an ARF. I used every bit of it. Wood quality seemed good and the glue joints also looked nice. Fiberglass cowl and wheel pants were nice too. The tail wheel setup was kind of wacky but I used it too.

The engine I used was a Sachs 3.1. A lighter engine would be better for this plane but this was the one I had. I used a Futaba 1/4 scale servo with a pull pull setup on the rudder, and hitec high torque servos on the ailerons and elevators. The finished weight came out at 16lbs 10oz. Balance is a little nose heavy with no additional weight added. I am going to leave it there for first flights. This is a little heavier than the other Hurricanes I have seen posted on this site but I hope it flies ok. I will test fly it as soon as I can and report it here.

I added some red striping tape to spice up the colors a little and I think it really helped the looks. Great looking plane. Looks just like an Edge! Could save quite a bit of weight by scrapping the stock wheels and pants but not worth giving up the slick looks!

Only a few things I did not like about the plane. The landing gear should be a little taller to help with ground clearance for bigger props. I was forced to mount my engine about 3/8" lower than I should have. My muffler hit the bottom of the engine box and it would not allow me to raise the engine up to match the cowl. It would have taken major engine box reconstruction to modify it. The way the engine box was built and reinforced I did not find it necessary to hack it up for less than a half inch. I don't expect it to effect the way if flys.
Where the servos mount side by side in the tail they almost did not fit! I used 605's and they were almost too wide to squeeze in there.
The manual did not match this plane in some ways. There had obviously been some revisions in the kit since the manual had been written. Nothing major, just had to pay attention.

THat is about it. I will enlcose a couple of pics. can't wait to fly it!

I really don't expect any problems with the slow flight on this plane. I had a DP Extra that weighed 16+lbs and it flew great. My midwest Extra weighed 18lbs and it flew great too. This is a pretty big plane and I think it will support the weight with no problems. (I hope)

Bryan, I will need your help getting the weight down on this plane. I will need you to trade me your BME 50 for my Sachs! That would save me a little over a pound.

On a good set of digital scales like mine, I would be very suprised to see any of these weigh less than 15lbs with a gas motor. THat is unless it was really tail heavy.

Ok Bryan, we can trade engines, but I just would not feel right about taking your money too...

I got to fly this plane last night. It flew great. I can't wait to get comfortable with it and attempt to wring it out. I checked out it's slow flight characteristics and it was really something. I had it on low rate elevator and I brought it to an idle while slowly applying more up elevator. While waiting for it to stall it just started to slowly fall straight down. No tipping or anything like that, it went straight into an elevator! That was cool, and I knew right away that landing this thing would be very simple. Will be interesting to see what it will do with the 3d throws. It was breezy and getting dark so I did not get to mess with that yet. Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know that the Hurricane seems to fly just as good as everyone says. If you are on the fence about getting this plane rest assured that it is a good one.

LovemyEdge, wait till you get used to it, it's gonna amaze you with what it can do. You will also find it has a favorite speed range, about 60 MPH, where it really settles into a grove and will do ANYTHING you ask. The only problem I've had is some mild wing-rock in elevators and harriers, if this happens to you try reflexing the ailerons 1/4 inch, I do this with a mix linked to the elevators.

A friend has been flying a scratch built Hurricane this year. 78 inch wing with a Brison 2.4 and it flies slow like a trainer, but wind it up and it is awsome. If yours flies anywhere as nice as his, you are gonna love it.
