I am thinking of getting this plane. I have heard alot of good things about the extra 300 46 size but not too much about the 61. I am planning on using a OS 91. Any tips and pros or cons welcome. I want to stay in the price range and size on this plane (150.00$@ Tower) if you have any other suggestions. I am looking to get into a plane with more 3D possibilities....Thanks, Tugboat.

Hey tugboat,
I just maidened my Phoenix Extra 330 yesterday, I set mine up more for scale aerobatics than 3d but I think if you build it as light as possible it would 3d great. The only problems I found with this plane were that the cap screws that hold the canopy on will vibrate out almost within the first 60 seconds of the engine being started,I fixed this by putting a thin piece of fuel tubing between the head of the bolt and the washer to act as a spring washer. The second problem is that the supplied control rods although !QUOT!carbon fiber!QUOT! are a bit shoddily made and heavy when assembled, I just got some threaded control rod wire from my hobby shop and run a !QUOT!Z!QUOT!bend on one end and a dubro quick link clevis on the other (simple light and foolproof). I'm running a OS 120 AX with a perry smoke pump setup so its a bit heavier than yours will turn out but it still takes off in about 12-16 feet and comes in to land at a trainer like pace if you want it to, here are a few pics of the plane while I was building it, Ill try and get some pics of the canopy bolts and control linkages today and post them tonight.
Cheers

Hey Weedy, Thanks for the the input! I will check out the suggestions you made.Your pics look nice. Looks like a clean set up.What servos are you using? (standards , Hi-torque etc.) Did you see any need to reinforce the the wing area, like some people have on the smaller 300 model, to strengthen the landing gear? Thanks again,Tugboat.

The elevator stab is in one piece but the elevator has separate left and right movement with each side having its own servo if thats what you mean.. As far as going vertical with the .91 I am not sure. I posted a question about the same thing in the GENERAL QUESTIONS area of the forums, titled 2 STROKE OR FOUR STROKE POWER? There is some good insight there on engine choices..............Tugboat.

Can someone please measure the wings so I can figure out the wing area of the plane? I am seriously considering getting one, but would like to know the wing area first so that I can also calculate ling loading.
I would really appreciate it if any of you guys could do that for me!

Hey Tug
Yep Its a custom muffler, I used to have a Phoenix Diabolo with a stock muffler and always hated the fact that it stuck out of the bottom of the cowl.

So when I got the Extra I taught myself to Tig weld aluminum, I made it the same size as a Bisson pitts but recently cut it back and made it smaller to improve pressure in the fuel tank.Im running HS-5475HB standard digital servos on elevator and ailerons and a HS-5985MG on rudder.Ive put eight flights on her now and its an awesome combination,Knife-edge has no roll coupling and Id forgotten how good flatspins and knife-edge spins were with an extra.I think Ill be buying Phoenix models for a long time to come.I took a pic of the bottom of the plane too as requested, the wings and stabs were originally all grey I added the white stripes for contrast.
