Default ARF for 52 4-stroke engine

I am looking for an ARF that would fly well with a 52 4-stroke. It can be sport, scale, 3-d. etc. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed

Seagull Spacewalker

Real easy flyer and it just looks and sounds the part with a smooth running 4 stroke. Mine had a range of engines in it - MDS 48, Saito 56 & Saito 82 (to run in the 82). It flew pretty well with the 56.

That's a fairly long list! most all the forty size bird's will fly well with your .52 4 banger... you really won't over power any of them however.

3D, keep it under 4 1/2 pounds... if you want to hover down low keep it under 4 pounds.

Sport, keep it under 5 1/2 pounds for good vertical... up to 6 for OK vertical.

Scale, keep it around 6 1/2 for a little better than scale flight on a fairly low drag scale bird... cub. spacewalker and the like... up to about 7 1/2 for scale like flight again on a fairly low drag bird... if you go bipe or high drag keep it around 6 1/2 pounds.

The #'s are based on flying at 2500 ft ASL with my 52's and a 56 4 stroke... and of course VERY subjective.

John

Edit

Forget warbirds... even the 40 size will not fly very well... you just need more speed and power than your .52 can deliver... not that some won't fly... they will... just not like a warbird should IMHO.

I fly the Modeltech Magic 3d with a asp 52 with a apc 13x4 sport prop flies great 4.25lbs hovers no problem good vertical not a rocket but it pulls out fine
you can get under 4 lbs with a micro on the throttle and a 4.8 AAA pack
I'm running a 6volt pack 6 oz a AAA 4.8 is under 2 and you save 1/2 oz or more with micro for the throttle
it's not the nicest looking plane but it hard to get bored with it
doesn't knife edge or do outside stuff real well but for 99 bucks it keeps me smiling

here's some good video of it with a saito 56

beg to differ with you that a .52fs will not fly a warbird. It flys the Modeltech SE5a with plenty of power.

Outlaw, of course their are exceptions... the Se5a would be one... super flying models Eindecker would be another. Take something like a 40 size Mustang, P-47, Zero, Corsair and the like and you would probably not be happy with the way they would fly... they would fly... but not the way they should.

You can never go wrong with a sig 4 star 40 and you can do beautiful touch and goes all day long with a Sig Senior Kadet and that 52.

What kind of flying are you after?

As Submikster asked: what kind of flying are you after? If you want a Mini-pattern plane a Tower Kaos and that engine would be a sweet model. If you want to throw something all around in maneuvers no real pilot could remain conscious through hook it on a Dazzler 40 and don't blink. If you want a fun aerobatic model a Great Planes Ultimate 40 Bipe with that engine would be a blast, but you're not going to do the "high alpha" 3-D stuff.

But you could always hook the wheels over a clothesline and do those without an engine.

After thinking about what type of model I am looking for, I would guess either a Kaos (go where you point airplane) or a scale model like the Spacewalker. Maybe a Cub or Decathlon would be nice. I am sure that I do not want an aircraft for serious 3-D.

The Sig 40 size Rascal works real well with a .52 4-stroke....wheels or floats...great flying sport plane...

Hangar 9 .40 size Cub. Had one with a .52 Magnum FS and it was a blast...

I put a Saito 56 on a Hanger 9 Tribute 36 and am completely happy with the performance. The plane is a little fragile and the 56 requires a lot of carving to get it to fit but it makes a nice combo.

ekir, the Kaos, spacewalker or Cub would be good choices... the Decathlon... I don't think it would be a good one. The ARF Decathlons on the market for the most part end up in the 7 1/2+ pound range... that's really pushing your .52 given the how the plane should fly... I fly my TT Decathlon with a Saito .72 at 7 1/2 pounds... it's enough... but not by much... I don't think I would like the plane with one of my 52's/ 56's on the nose.
