They can - but not for very long
2 main reasons
3d planes have large control surfaces that have a tendency to flutter at high speeds. this usually results in mid air destruction of the airframe and is near impossible to stop.
The large control surfaces are usually way too effective so at high speeds, the slightest movement of the surface results in a change of attitude of the plane.
Also - the airfoil sections etc are not designed for speed and they tend to have a lot of drag. If you were to try and power one to go fast - it would take a HUGE motor to get a good speed.

Probably not - 3d planes tend to have a high frontal area whereas the speed planes don't.
Get a 3d'er and look at it straight on from the front, then look at a speed model and look at it straight on from the front - you will see a lot less plane on the speed models - thin wing chord, more stramlined fuselage etc.

Viper 500 with Jett 50 engine.

I bought a similar one already built, but it has a bizarre ring style engine mounting system. I couldn't figure out how to install the engine.

Hi Orenda365
They mount through the backplate bolts for the motor.
It saves a lot of weight - other than some slightly longer bolts there are no additional bits like an engine mount to worry about.

The Lil Tony is not that fast, seen it fly on a YS110 ... Diamond Dust is very fast with a really hot motor but its better to look for the pylon planes, the 21/25 sized ones. Maybe the MagnumR.
