Default H9 Cap 232--I crashed on the first flight

I sure hope Tim agrees cause I would love to see how it works the puny flight sim I have (GP Real Pilot) is not all that great.

Default Tim's Rolling Circles 101

For those that requested it, here's a page I threw up on Tim's email to me - it was a great help, and now I understand rolling circles MUCH better!!

Thanks, Tim!!

Tim's email on Rolling Circles

Again, this was in response to my request, and I have been practicing it on Real Flight, but I have found a LARGE amount of experience on RF, translates to a good amount of improvement in Real Life Flying...

Enjoy!!

Default H9 Cap 232--I crashed on the first flight

Hey

I had my Cap for 3 years without a mishap.Just gotta know how to use throttle control. Fly it all the way to the landing..
I started flying it with a ys 120 the motor dropped a valve guide so I switched to a 160os.Pure unlimited verticle since then I sold it and bought a dave patrick models 330.I dare you to tip stall this one.this is the slowest one Iv'e ever flown.. The only problem with the model is the back of the fuse. broke.Back by the end of the canopy..the tail was floppin around but I still landed it only to bend the gear a little

Hey Dan...

I know what you are talking about with no (or little) vertical when using a plane/motor combo that everyone else said is so hot...I'm across the mountain from you in Alamogordo...we're a little over 4300'... and it takes a little bit more motor and a little less prop the higher up you get. I have a Somethin' Extra with a Saito 72, running an APC 13x6 prop. Everyone says this combo should should be the hot ticket for vertical stuff, but I barely have enough thrust to hover. Just thought I would throw in my 2 cents on this thread...I'm about to try out a WM 46 size Cap 232...and first flights will be with VERY little throws...I learned that lesson from the SE...

Default Shop a Prop

Try a 18 x 6, 18 x 6W or 18 x 6-10 prop. Experiment with different makes of props.

The 16 x series props develops only around 15 lbs thrust, the 18 series punches out 24 pounds. But, to get approximately the same RPMs, when going to the next largest prop diameter, you must lower the pitch by 1.

Thus, to keep the same RPMS as your 16 X 8 prop, use:

17 x 7

or

18 x 6

This is rule of thumb at it's best. You will see a slight decrease in RPMs simply because the increased weight of the bigger prop will induce a load. That is, unless you want to invest in the Mezlik prop, or other CF variant.

steven04:

For your Something Extra and Saito 72, try a APC 14x4 W, 13x4W, or 14x5N. I am able to get unlimited vertical on my 5.5lb stick plane w/ 14x4W @ 10,000 rpm. Your Something Extra should do well w/ the 14x4W if you can get enough ground clearance.

Use an 17x6 APC in place of the 16x8 for improved thrust. This prop is sometime harder to find but the Satio 180 likes it alot. I would also recommend trying Coolpower 30% Heli mix for a boost in performance too. Make sure to get the heli formula because it has an increased oil content.

One thing I would like to add which has only been touched on once is that the key to making a cap 232 design more friendly is to use small rates on the elevator when flying and most of all KEEP THE PLANE LIGHT. Use only what is needed to fly the plane. No redundacy battery systems and forget smoke. I have seen an Lanier Cap 232 that was almost impossible to land due to its weight. It was 2 pounds overweight!!! He had to land it unbelieveably hot.

Default H9 Cap 232--I crashed on the first flight

Woo-Hoo! Today was my first flight of my H9 Edge! My first 1/4 scale too. Reading this thread, I was scared, shaking like a cube of jello. No problems though, Felt like a contest sailplane(almost). I cheated and used this forum and Skerlock's experience for info on this plane's set up. Love this plane! Good luck to all who are moving up to this size plane.

if you have a really nice plane or expensive you COULD install the co pilot its a device that will save your plane if you get in trouble it works by using hands off! you can even land hands off with it!

Tom- Thats nice to hear about your first flight with your 1/4 scale. I have a 1/4 scale Sig 300XS that I haven't flown yet. Have never flown anything bigger than a .40 size. This my second summer flying so I have held off till I thought I was ready. Reading this post about all the tip stalls, had me afraid to try it. Right now I have been flying H9's .40 Cap 232. Love it. I think I am ready now, but winter is setting in here in Mi, so I think I'll wait till next spring. Got the plane the winter before last, so I really am getting anxious to fly it.

Default learn from my mistake

These things have to be flown in and then chop the gas, now why can't I get that through my thick skull (snapped one on landing last week)? If you in any way doubt your skills or nerves get someone to help you. They see things you don't and can keep you out of trouble before it happens. A good caller is worth their weight in digial servos.
