Here are some pics of my battery installation for the electric version of the Tango. This battery position puts the CG at 4.75" aft of LE with no ballast required. Note the ESC and BEC are all the way forward too. The battery is a TP 4S5000mah weighing 17.25 oz. AUW is 5.3 lbs.

I built up the plywood battery mount a little as shown in the photo. It fits in nice and snug. Also notice I colored coded the aileron cables so plugs can't be put on backwards.

Pilot report for first flight, Tango 40 electric.

WOW! What a solid flyer. I loved this plane the minute it jumped into the air. It cruised easily, and required almost NO TRIM. I only added one click back on the elevator. With the controls all set to the manual recommendations, it flew straight as an arrow.

Low rates provided plenty of control for sport and aerobatics. I haven't tried high rates yet because the control was great. Basic aerobacs were smooth and easy. I set flaps to 40% for landing, and there was no adverse pitch down. It really slowed her down for a sweet landing!
I am going to see if 45% flaps are OK next.

I set all controls to 50% expo, and that seems about right for low rates. Battery consumption was under 2000 mah over 6 minutes of sport flying. Wow!

I will try 3D next and report how that goes, but for now, I think I have a new favorite airplane!

I'm in the market for a New Plane and the Tango looks like a good prospect; I had a Twist with a Irvine 53, flew it for over 2 years, great plane, got my money's worth out of it until I crashed it in the Spring, as a replacement and a new home for the Irvine I got a Profile, not much different than a Mojo, I was glad I crashed it yesterday at a Fun Fly; it was a great performing Plane and a lot of fun; but what a pain in the #$@ to store it and transport it, you couldn't take the wings off, a major flaw in Profiles; I'm going to get a Tango this week, a great new home for my Irvine 53; it should make the Tango burn up the sky.

Another build tip for the Tango:

For the holes in the wings where the 1/4 nylon screws go through, I used thin CA to harden up the wood, then GENTLY smoothed the hole with a round file. I found that the balsa was getting damaged each time I put on, and took off the wing. Now its holding up great.

Flew it in some gusting wind up to about 8 mph, and it did fine. Great aerobatics and it didn't get tossed about any. Flaps set at 20% for take off and 45% for landing works great (flap settings are in percent, not degrees of deflection). I also like the power of the Power BL 46. Vertical capability, but not over kill.

My expo settings are 40% rudder, 50% elevator, and 60% aileron. After about 4 flights, this works good for me.

I was surprised at the amount of work that was done by Horizon to make this a really great ARF. I like the premades links, ver nice touch. Nothing at all bad to report about the kit.

I finished mine up tonight and it came out at 5lbs 2oz minus fuel w a evolution 46 on a macs pipe.

It definately has a very interesting look to it but it really grows on you. I hope I can get a maiden tomorrow.

Let us know what you think on you first flight. Becareful on the high rates, as I have only flown the low rates so far, and it is PLENTY. Only do high rates for 3D.

Otherwise, there are no bad characteristics or hints I would give you. There were no surprises on first flight, except how nice it flew. It goes where you points, flies straight, fast or slow, and lands nicely. If you like a slow landing, the flaperons are nice, and have NO adverse pitch when deployed.

Got my Tango today, what an easy build; found a problem; it seems that the fuel tank may rub against the engine mount bolts; the ones supplied are 6/32 X 1"; a bit too long; I will replace with shorter bolts and put some foam behind the firewall to cushion the fuel tank; also, the leading edge of the verticle stab has a gap where it meets the fuselage; I think I will use some white monokote/ultrakote to cover the gap; peeled off the Tango Decals, looks a lot better without the goofy decals, I may replace the aluminum landing gear with some fiberglass gear by dubro

I use this gear on a Twin Stik I have, and they work great, super durable, retains shape, never gets bent out of shape; I plan of flying it this weekend.

Could you post a picture of your bird without the stickers? Sounds like a great idea, but I'd like to compare versions first.

I will try and post some photos tomorrow; in the meantime here is a photo of it without the decals from Horizon Hobbies. By the way, in my previous post I said the Engine Mount Bolts that go through the Firewall are too long, get 6/32 x 3/4"; put a washer on them and they are the perfect length, nice and flush.

I rather like its looks with the decales, though. I am wondering if the Tango can handle an OS 55 AX engine. Would that be too much for it? I know it'll easily swing a 13 x 7 prop at 12,000 RPM, no problem. Well, according to OS Engine's literature.

Horizon recomends the Evo .52, Im sure the OS .55 would be fine. Maybe go with a bigger prop, less pitch. More power, less speed.

I am running a 13x8 APC on my electric Tango and it is great. If your OS 55 pulls a 13x7, sounds like a good power match. RPM on the electric tops out at about 8,000 rpm, so the higher RPM on your gasser would be good with the lower pitch.

my tango is on the way. i am wondering, has any one flown a tango with a saito 82 on it? i am wondering if that is ample engine to hover this plane at about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle? also what do you think about a saito 100 on the tango( with alittle self control of course)?

I think a Saito 100 would add too much weight, with no advantage. From what I've read about the Twist (the Tango's older sibling), a Saito 72 is a perfect match. I think the case will be the same for the Tango.

Better go 70 or larger for the full effect. I flew one with the Evolution .52 on it & it flies like a Top wing TwisT 40. Lots of fun. Who needs MOJO when you can get a airplane with a fuse.

We now have 4 of these at the field. Two have .46s on them, one with an OS .55 and the other has a Saito .72. All of these fly fine with a slight edge going to the .55 or the .72. The .46s will pull out of a hover but the .55 and the .72 do it with ease.

i have out grown my hanger 9 pts mustang (i have both the p-51 and the f-22 pts the mustang was an ebay deal kind of rough around the edges and the f-22 was new from LHS) so i was thinging about sacrficing its engine and electronics into a tango will i have any problems useing the pts engine and parts?? Thanks

If the engine is one of the typical .46 engines it should be a snap and have good performance.

Thanks for the advice, tclaridge. I just had a Great Planes Slow Poke donated to me, and I believe that's where I'll install my 46 AX. Meanwhile, the OS 55 AX I recently acquired will go on the Tango, when (hopefully soon) I get it. The LHS sold the one they had, so it looks like I'll have to order this one from Horizon. I plan to use a JR SX600 radio with ST47 servos, and will set up exponential. Can anybody advise which percentage would work best? Thanks.

Oh by the way, can somebody post a video other than the one on Hangar-9's web site? Also, how about a review? I'd certainly enjoy more reading on this.

Here are a couple of pic's of my Tango. It has an GMS 47 on it, have used both 10x6 and 11x5 apc props. Also I'm using standard Futaba servos and a 5 cell 700 mah rx battery. I'm having a lot of fun flying it in the wind. It does both right side and inverted flat spins well.

I have flown mine a couple of times; great plane; had some elevator flutter on a power dive; I fly mine with a Irive 53; all kinds of verticle, hovering, etc; I don't fly it too much at full throttle because of the flutter, I'm going to see if I can put dual elevator servos, or I may just leave it as it is; I know it was real windy that day with the flutter so that may have contributed to it.

weel i got my tango today from my LHS and swaped out my pts gear. This thing builds fast about an hour and a half can't wait to give it a try
