Whats the trick to make this work?

I have 2 of these from Dubro and cannot make them work.
I already did a big hole in my Ryan , adapted it, put the red covered wire to the spark plug and the other bolted to the motor screw and nothing!!!

Is there a special trick to it?
do I need to cut thte lenght of the wire or something?

Moto, I had some of the same problems. Make sure your ground is secure to one of the bolts securing the motor to motor mount, but #1 is the little clips that fasten to the glow plug. I found that they have to be very snug around the plug. Take a needle nose and give them a good pinch. Hope this helps.

Oh yea, there's a trick to it.....
Cut a very small piece of fuel tubing...1/8 or 1/16 and put it over your glow plug, then put the wire on.
when you put the igniter it shows green, right?
Everything looks like it should light, but it won't, right?
The hot wire is grounding out against the plug.
Try the tubing idea and then be sure to come back and tell me that it worked, OK?

Also, make sure your plug is good. I have seen people try them and get frusterated and find that the plug was dead. The ground idea sounds logical too.

Thanks alot guys, I put the hose over the plug, tightened the wire to the plug and the other wire to the engine bolt and the motor started first try using the remote!!!

OK, so you don't think me a pompus arse, I too, was having fits two weeks ago with the same exact issue as Motodave.
Two hours at the field, putzing around. I didn't get it, it worked fine at home, several times in fact.

Finally one of the great rc gods at my club walked on over and mentioned the tubing idea.....

Also try using a small wheel collar instead of the clip that comes with the igniter. Just file a small flat spot on the collar and solder the positive lead to it, the set screw holds it on the plug. The small piece of fuel tubing is a good idea for this setup also.

I want to add to this post something I ran into yesterday.... I have an old power panel that I use on my remote connection for the in cowl glow plug and I could not get anything to work/glow... Today I installed my new one and guess what everything started to work/glow... It seems although my old panel worked in all functions ....it did not have the full power needed to cause the glow plug to glow... I am checking that battery on the old panel and will report back later...

So be sure you are getting the correct power/voltage to your remote... use a volt meter and check yours and others at the flying field... It could be either a battery problem or the power panel that is not getting the correct power to the glow plug...

Also, if you are using the power panel to provide power to your hand held starter it can deplete the power supply enough to cause the glow plug to not glow.... ( if both are being used at the same time and that would be normal when starting)....

I am using a different power supply now for my starter but did have that problem of voltage drop to the glow plug last summer when using the starter and the glow and the same time....(you will see the needle on the panel drop when cranking)....

After checking both power panels with and without the best hot 12 v battery..... I find that the problem for me has been the battery and not the panel......

The old power panel and battery tested at 8.45 volts at the mid range setting and 8.48 in the high end setting...

The new power panel and a new hot 12 V battery tested at 9.60 volts at the mid range setting and 9.64 in the high end setting....

The old power panel and the new hot battery tested as the same as the new power panel... so the old dirty panel is good for now....


BUT... I have a question which I would appreciate some help understanding how the glow plug does not burn out with 9.64 volts... from experience I know that if you plug into the 12 volt connection on the panel accidentially your plug is gone... bright red and gone.... whereas a small glow ignitor that has one battery and checks out around 1.3 +volts will give you a bright red glow... the same as the panel powered putting out 9.6+ but does not burn out the glow plug.... Thanks...

I use this for all my planes and haven't yet had a problem with them. They are better than Dubro's version IMHO.

You might have to widen the ground soder plug or replace it with a larger one. The stock soder plug seems to be a bit small. I just pull the wire as you slide the boot on the glow plug, and take the ground soder plug and slide the allen exhaust bolt through it and tighten it down. Your using the engine as a ground, so you want it close to the glow plug. Making the amp travel at its minimum.

Good morning Pete... Is the soder plug the black plug that is put on the glow plug and has a sliding wire connection? I have one but the black head plug will not seat down into the 120 Magnum head... I do not under what you mean by the allen exhaust bolt..... or how you are making the ground..... thanks for your help...

Morning Richard.

No, soder plugs is in the first photo. You use that for your ground. The Allen bolts is used for 2-strokes to attatch the exhaust. If you're using a 4-stroke just find a place close to the glow plug on your engine to bolt it down. It will be the same concept, just a different type of motor. I took these pictures just for you. Study them, it will explain everything.

The boot that pops on your glow plug can be removed or trimmed if need be to fit any engine. I trust a spring loaded clamp system for the glow plug, before I trust something I have to pinch on. JMHO

As they say Pete.... a picture is worth a thousand words... everything is clear to me now.... flew today with the setup and all went well with the remote starting.....

At the hobby shop yesterday they introduced me to the Traxx glow plug connection... very small and tight.. very tight... about $1.80... I have about 4 different connectors/heads that go on the glow plug... testing what is best for this hard to fit Magnum 120 four stroke... I like the one you have in the pictures but it will not go down into the hole where the glow plug sits... very tight and small area to work in... The push and twist connectors fit but have had a problem with them coming off.... Thanks for all of your help.... One more day of testing and then the cowl gets installed....

Fantastic. Now you know what the deal is with those things. Good luck with the testing. It should pass your testing if it worked earlier.
