hudmun,
you will find that the P-51 will actually stay where you point it, unlike your trainer that keeps trying to correct itself to an upright and straight ahead heading...
I recommend you get someone to do the TEST FLIGHT for you and get it all trimmed out... perhaps even buddy box you a few flights first... or minimum have someone Test fly it and trim it out for you..
This will guarantee the best success!
They are not that tough to fly.. actually just as was said before...
Keep speed up on turns, don't idle down on landing until you are 1-3 ft above the threshold of the runway, keep your nose down on landing approaches... you cannot "BALLOON"/FLOAT it in as easy as a trainer..
keep the speed up at a nice low speed until you are right above the runway... then chop the throttle!
Use your rudder not just your ailerons!
-YOU WILL BE FINE!
-CHEERS!

BTW,
Here is a cool bit of reading you should meditate on before flying your Warbird!

-YOU CAN DO IT! Just do it with caution and some assistance!!!

Use the elevator & keep the arse end down till you build up your speed for take off. Like nemesis said, keep your speed up on landings & once you touch down, go to the elevator & YA, KEEP YOUR ARSE DOWN!!!

This plane flies nice and will go where you put it but it lands pretty slow (trainer like). If you can land or steer a taildragger, you will do fine. I find that the taildragger part is the most difficult part of flying a warbird. Just don't go too slow. Thats all you need to know. Not too fast either. The big airfoil on the wing will allow it to float in for landing better. The airfoil is even thicker than my 60 size birds.

ok, i got it in the air, little sketchy, not pretty, but up it went. I managed to hit a small road marker[ those little yellow round things they glue to the roads to seperate lines ] knocked the right wheel loose flopping around . I've hit those a hundred times with my trainer no probs. anyway i got it trimmed, took a few minutes then flew around for about 10 mins then did about 5 or 6 passes over the landing area knowing i had a bad wheel tryed to bring it in slow. It stalled maybe 10 foot in the air , pulled up and rooled right and landed up side down. Bummer but the plane is in great shape, can't beleive it. mostly cosmetic.
