I think that you sould also look into the RC GUYS andy sherberts 33% pitts. Has over 1600 squares of flying area! Talk about floater! >Then there is the COX pica ARF that comes in the 1/5 and 1/6 flavor! NIce planes!
Also look at the Great planes Hawk... (I am)
Perfect for that 40cc gasser! and on sale to boot from tower right now!!

How would the GP Super Stearman be as a first double winger? I like this plane a lot. I was all so thinking of Hanger 9 Sopwith Camel. Thanks

I agree with the Great Planes Service. Their covering stinks but the customer service is EXCELLENT. I e mailed a complaint about the wrinkles in my ailerons on my GP Super Stearman and got a reply 1 day later and an offer to ship me a new set of ailerons. I'ts hard not to like these guys.

I would have to agree with you on the service. After I had been working on mine for a couple of evenings, I noticed that neither of my elevators were even close to being flat. In fact they both were warped in opposite directions of each other. I could have probably fixed it myself but, why should I have to I thought. I called and let them know the problem and 1 week later they sent me a whole new set of tail feathers rudder and vertical stab included as well. Excellent Service.

If you think the covering on the ARF is bad, wait until you have to buy replacement wings like I did. The covering on those is horrible. Must use the replacement parts to train the new guys.[&o][&o][&o][&o]

So send them back and ask for better wings

Hey Guy's
I have a couple of questions. For any of you that used the the four servo set up on the ailrons do you have any close up pix's of how you ran the leads to the fuse.I want a clean set up.I don't want wires just hanging down from the top wing and just plugged into a jack.Did you put the 'y' harness in the top wing and then run one lead out of the wing and then plug it in to a jack.Or maybe two wires and plug into two jacks and then use a 'y' harness in the fuse.I also was wondering if anyone makes a fuel shutoff valve that I could use because I dont want the fuel to siphone to the carb when it's not running.I'm using a saito 150.Thank you

I got the last set before they went out of stock again (page 25). Besides, for the time it takes to get them straight and tight, it's not worth the bother. I think we spent about an hour and a half on the two wings. BTW How did the Brilleli 26cc work out? I have a brand new BCMA 26cc that i was going to put into a Christen Eagle but could put it into the Stearman instead of the Magnum.

Tailwheel Pilot
I ran a Y-Harness between my two top servos and then ran it into the left wing with one lead coming out of the hole. I then put an Ernst connector at the base of the center cabane, left side front and wound the lead around the left front cabane arm and plugged it into the Ernst connector. About as clean as you can get with the four servo setup. At the receiver I used a Futaba 6" double block connector to plug the two Y-harnesses in.

Thanks Lou,
Seems like it would be tuff to get that 'y' connecter in the top wing but I think I'll give it a try.

You have to put it in prior to putting the two halves together. You'll end up with a lot of it stuffed in the left side of the wing but it doesn't show and you only need enough of the lead coming out of the hole to wrap around the cabane a few times before plugging it in. Once you have enough sticking out you can cover the hole with a piece of monokote so all you see is the wire lead coming out. I think I covered this in detail in my full user review of this plane.

Stearman guys,
I'm putting mine together and have a couple of questions.Did anyone have any trouble with the cabane struts not being flush with the fuse when I put the top wing on.The left side seems to be fine but the right side is off.i checked everything and I'm sure i have everything right.I even disconected the N struts and it still wont sit flush. Also, if anyone used a saito 150 and you have a smoke system which smoke system and muffler did you use.Thank you

edkoz 03-02-2007 12:54 AM

RE: GP Super Stearman

Tailwheel:

I've got the Saito 150 with smoke. I'm using the TME system with NO special muffler. I got some really good info from this forum regarding smoke, if I can find the link I'll send it to you.

Basically what was recommended to me was to drill and tap a hole in the header for the oil fitting. No preheater, no special muffler. I saw videos of this fellas Christen Eagle with this set up and the smoke looked great.

I haven't been able to fly mine yet as the weather here in Michigan is nowhere near nice enough yet. I definitely want a nice day for the Stearman maiden.

Thanks ED,
Did you mount your engine inverted and if so did you do anything about the carb being so much below the fuel tank.I'm just worried about fuel siphoning. Thanks again.just saw your link.I'll check it out.

edkoz 03-02-2007 02:30 AM

RE: GP Super Stearman

It's mounted inverted. I've had it running in the garage and siphoning doesn't seem to be a problem.

Wow, I just read the whole thread, start to finish, in one sitting! Thanks to all of you that contributed to this thread.

You have posted some great info, here. If I go ahead with this project, I'll power it with my G-26 and use the four aileron servo setup. I may add smoke, too.

Thanks again, for all the postings. The info here should help all those assembling this model.

RE: GP Super Stearman

Hey FF
I saw the post in this thread that a few people got the dubro tires because the stock tires are to stiff and cause the plane to bounce on landing. So when I asked them for a replacment cowl and a set of ailerons I asked if they knew of RCU and they did so I told them about the posts in the thread about the tires and she put me on hold to check it out and when she came back she told me I would get a set of the tires sent with the cowl and ailerons
