RE: BME Edge?

I spoke to Max at BME Aircraft about these... He has the prototype built by the assembly standards of the production planes.

With a BME 50 he said it came in at 15.5 lbs. When I asked if he thought the production planes would come in heavier he stated "no way".

He was very excited about it's flying characteristics too... one quote was that you could be heading straight down at idle, slam the elevator to full up and it would elevator down slow, stable and very vertical.

Seems many of the new 50cc offerings have been coming in 1-2 lbs heavier than expected, and if these do finish out at 15.5 will certainly be a keeper.

They are a tad bigger too at 85"...

That sounds great. I'm very curious about the quality of the build out.

I just pre-ordered mine yesterday. Can't wait! I'm still trying to decide what engine to go with. Any thoughts?

I've had two of the 84" Wild Hares and still have the Extra. Both powered by a Brison 3.2 and fly well.. If the BME comes in that light, why not go with the BME engine. It's said to have more power than the Brison, but who knows. It is lighter for sure. In any case, the firewall and instructions will most certainly be set up around, show, and have mounting instructions for a BME 50.

RE: BME Edge?

With the send-up they're giving this new line of ARF's I'm hoping they'll be as superior as they're saying. They're kinda sketchy on their website about alot of details. If they come off like they say they'll make good entrylevel gassers for 3d training which is exactly what I'm looking for. Just tired of wiping residue off everything, including myself after each day of flying, (my little daughter says I smell like a lawnmower when I come in). Plus I need an arf to fill the gap while I'm building my GP 33% Extra 330L. When I get it in I plan to take pics of the kit and post for all to see. If they drop the ball on thisun....

Going to go mostly stock if possible but just in case I've already got my spare hardware on standby new in the package's. Has anyone got info on the prototypes? What they were test flown with etc? Still haven't decided on an engine or smoke system yet, leaning toward a ZDZ 60, that comes in at only 4 lbs, the 3w 60 weighs in at 5.32 with less hp. I just bought a new 3w 106b2QS for my Extra 330l project and had hoped to get another 3W but after a little research I'm not so sure now. Going kinda slow with my first venture into the gas world. Any input would be appreciated. Also if anyone has a link to a thread on wiring recommendations and battery choices/ configs, that'd be great too.

RE: BME Edge?

Both the Challenger & Edge were flown with BME 50's...

The Ultimate was with a BME 110 Extreme. (not surprisingly) :)

Max told me that he was very pleased with the flying characteristics and the quality of construction. He went to China to test fly the prototypes, then had a production unit of each shipped so he could test them direct.

The Edge is 85" and if I recal correctly came it at 15.5 lbs all up. That's an inch more than the WH Edge and about 1.5 lbs lighter. When I asked how he said that they were built solidly, but light for flying not heavy for crashing.

The GP Patty Wagstaff Extra (78"?) comes in around 16.5 so this must really be something. I test flew the Patty for a customer I built it for and thought if felt fairly light. Man this thing is gonna rock.

The first short batch of Ultimates are due in any day and I have one coming. I will share my findings of it's quality, design and flight as I promised to do a building thread.

I found out the other day that the Edges are ready to leave the plant for their voyage to BME Aircaft...

It's getting real close now... maybe 2 weeks or so??? :)

I had one on order until monday when I decided to go another direction. They told me they were having a problem with the cowls and expected to ship around the 20th now. but I was also told via e mail they would ship around june 1st, then later june 10th. so we will see. I still would love to see this bird go but I need something now.

I have one on order[waiting list]. Max told me the 20th, I hope so[8D]. Does anyone no what size spinner it will take? BME has not replied to my e-mails asking this. Hope this is not an indication of there customer service. If thy don't answer my questions before I pay for it what will it be like after.[:o]

wish they had some better schemes on them... But not bad price.

RE: BME Edge?

I e-mailed and asked the same question regarding the spinner but haven't received an answer yet either. Also had the same type info regarding delivery date. Already ordered a new DA 50-R to go on it. Da called yesterday...looks like I'll have motor and no plane. I was really looking forward to this, mainly due to it's weight and what I'd heard about the prototype. Hope I don't have to change my mind.

I have a Wild Hare ordered but this looks good also.

RE: BME Edge?

I agree with you on the covering[:'(]. If it ends up at 15.5 Lbs and flies nice, I'll live with it. Some vinyl graphics should help.

ronk1 06-12-2004 10:17 PM

RE: BME Edge?

I was going to get a Wild Hare also but when I found out thy weigh as much as 18 Lbs with a "modern" 50cc engine that idea went out the door!

but they fly great, and have plenty of power

RE: BME Edge?

I saw a Wild Hare Edge 540T fly IMAC at Vicksburg MS yesterday with a ZDZ 50 and thought it looked very good. The pilot was a little young and inexperienced but held his own against the other competitiors and both he and plane put on a nice showing. I didn't get to talk with him but for a few moments and from what I could see the plane wasn't easy to stall, didn't seem to fly "heavy" and slowed down nicely landings. Color scheme was catchy too. The ZDZ seemed plenty for it as well. Wish I'd had more time to ask about weight and such because it sure got my interest up.

ronk1 06-13-2004 07:21 AM

RE: BME Edge?

I should not have posted a flying weight of the Wild Hare on rumors. I don't like it when other people people post things without doing there home work[:@]. The Wild Hare forum should have some answers, I'll get back.

RE: BME Edge?

The WH Edge is a nice flying plane... My buddy maidened his the other day and mine is waiting on misc. things...

I was disappointed in the weight, as I was really hoping for a 15.5 lb'er... But mine is 17.5 with the lighter gear/tube...

It was stated that the thier Edge weighed 17 lbs even with a G-62... Well so much for prototypes being much lighter than the production planes... :(

Still yet it's a great flier....

But now imagine another Edge... 2 lbs lighter and an inch bigger wingspan...

If the quality is as good as the 100cc Ultimate I just got in, it will nose out the WH in that department as well.

In fact guys... I have video of the Edge flying... I am editing it together for their website, and MAYBE, I can post a link here soon for you... :)

Maudib 06-13-2004 09:39 AM

RE: BME Edge?

Thanks... I just edited it tho... it was flown in B.C., Canada by Max Chen himself (I believe) and he himself says he's no great pilot... Maybe an intermediate IMAC and between a beginner/intermediate 3D'er...

I thought the plane harriered nicely with little wing rock and really flew slowly... impressive to say the least... I'd LOVE to see someone like you with more advanced 3D skills wring the thing out...

I may just have to sell my WH Edge get me one... :)

BTW... Thinking about the scheme...

it's VERY likely that the stripes on the wing and fuse are on TOP of solid white (not cut in)... light heat gun might strip them right off...

LOTS a fella could do with the white & red fuse... hmmm.. the cogs are grinding...

Very nice video, that put me over the "edge";) BME is the won I want [I've have one on order]. Do you have any idea what size spinner it takes? Max has not got back with this info. I'm ordering some other things and wanted to get the spinner at the same time. I would think 3 1/2" but I don't like to guess.

It's possible that Max is in China checking over they next shipment of items... or perhaps a new plane??? Who knows...

I don't know the spinner size... it probably is a 3.5" but best to wait on it till we know for sure.

Here's a pic I got: The parts included...

One more...

Here's a shot of the pull-pull servo... lots of room to slide it front and back for balance help... It also shows some clean laser cutting and what looks to be a simple but light and strong design...

That would be an Ultimate style spinner on the Edge right?

Maudib 06-14-2004 06:49 AM

RE: BME Edge?

More like a standard... tho an Ultimate would like fine too... maybe a little too pointy...
