Bud, iam doing my own exhaust, have stuffed to much in this plane as is but I really like yours and redoing mine to yours , Ive also changed the interior colors and the avant scheme seems dated so Ill be doing mine to the scheme thats on yours, but in light gold where yours is blue, and the interior was grey and red with black trim and is now its lt tan, chocolate with ivory trim, leather look seats, kept the avant dash, just did it my way , pleasing to the eyes, better go now jim

Thanks Jim,
Your scheme sounds good...pictures?? :) I'm doing the wiring on mine now (the part I always hated) Looks like I can get everything under the floor so i'll have a clean interior. Still have to get my instrument panel. I've yet to hook up the elev. and rudder but that's next, wings are done. I also have to get a 12mm prop reamer and spinner. Slow progress since I don't spend a lot of my day working on it but i'm getting there.

Here's a picture of how I routed my wiring for the flaps and ailerons. The female conns. are ca'd with a balsa spacer and the wiring is held in place with canopy glue. The servo's are behind the seat (I moved the servo's aft to place the seat in a more scale like position in relation to the rear window per the real one) the receiver and batt. are under the floor. So unless you look behind the seat the only radio parts showing is this wiring, the throttle cable is behind the side paneling.

Bud youve run your wiring the same as I, makes a cleaner look, I also labled what to where, would never remember that 3weeks later , with four planes, I need notes sheets on each one, may the sons can get the number down this year, less to remember, these cubs really do lend them selves to details and plenty of room to hide things, thanks again Jim

Bud Faulkner 03-20-2005 09:28 AM

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

Jim, I hear ya on the remembering....I just have to remember that the conn. closer to the root is the ailerons and the inside one is the flaps. I have conns. on both sides of the fuse for each wing. The ailerons are plugged into ch. 1 and ch 7 so I can get differential through mixing and the flaps are on a Y. Think maybe i'll paint the mail and female conns. of flaps with my wifes nail polish if I can remember where she keeps it. :D

I was just about to hook up my pull pull system when I noticed in the manual the long threaded pieces that the cable goes through and attach to the nylon snap link are x'd out in the picture on page 69 with a note...do not use? Am I missing something? What did everyone use?

Hi Bud,
In reply to your post, the cable ends that are Xed out in the manual are too small in diameter and they were replaced with a set of Du-Bro2-56 cable ends. The replacements were in my kit.
I am about finished with my interior and I would like to send you some pics, I will try to get some hobby time in this week end. Your pics were very helpfull, thanks.

Bud Faulkner 03-22-2005 09:59 PM

Thanks Andy, I'll go double check my parts.....looking forward to your pictures.
BTW my kit has 11 of those cable end parts that you're not supposed to use?

O.K. Just went and checked and they're missing, I just mailed DPM about them.

Jim, I've set mine aside waiting for DPM to mail the 4-40 pull pull connectors that were missing in my kit. Still have not ordered my spinner yet. May be a few month's before I get to the field to fly it since i'm going back to work evenings starting next week. Plus I have to finish my house renovations I stopped last fall when it got too cold. I'm not stalling, I just have too much to do for one old man. I'd love to go to toledo again but! Haven't been there since 1975....I built a scale helicopter I bought after the show then just for toledo but never made it back. Started it in '75 and finished it in '83. Slow build with moving out of state for job and all. Still have it and it's now a conversation piece. I did take third place out of 5 in '75 with my first kavan jet ranger at toledo. Prompted me to do a really scale heli and go back. I'm showing it tomorrow at hobbytown USA in a model contest. Back to cubs! When I get back on mine i'll take some more pic's. Think i'll wait till I fly it to do the lights, I did buy two small flashlights to use the lens from. Got them at ace hdw. Next winters project. ;)

Jim,
Check post # 433 and 435 they make one now for the DPM cub. They made it from picture's Tom Eustler and I sent but I think according to post # 433 the cowl had to be cut some. I'm not sure on the price but seems I heard somewhere it's $65.00 but don't quote me. Don't know how he did it from pictures. Mine has slowed down now that i've gone back to work but i'm about to order my spinner and a few other things to finish. Never did get my du-bro pull pull links from DPM they said they would send. Take care,

Jim, what did you use for the pipe material, how did you bend them, and how did you connect them to the engine? Do you have any pictures you can post?:)

I'm on the thread for the long haul, may be a little slow logging in from time to time due to work but i'm staying!! :D

Howard, if Jim doesn't mind my jumping in I have some pics of mine and Jim said this is what he did. Info on material is on post #367 and one picture. The material is bathroom plumbers pipe that hooks up to the water closet and is available at home depot. I have new front and side views now. This is of course if you're using the O.S. 160

A bit off topic, but I have a question: Will my Saito 130 TD twin pull the DPM Supercub around satisfactorily? I had it in my GP cub 60 (a pretty heavy cub) and it handled it fine. I love those OS Gemini's but I'll have to wait a spell before I can afford one of those AND the DPM Supercub:eek:.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

[&:] Yes, DANIEL-L, I believe it will fly just fine, the os 160 is just abit over powered, builder JIM

Bud Faulkner 04-25-2005 09:40 AM

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

Daniel,
As Jim said...should fly fine. Not familiar with saito but be prepared to throttle back. ;)
One guy has a YS 120 and has to bring it back to 1/4 throttle. You might want to check the width of the engine to see if it will fit in the super cub cowl without having to cut. Hope you'll post with us when you get started.

Thanks, Bud & all. I ordered my white Super Cub today, but....they won't have any in stock until June [:o] Dadgum it!

Somebody on this forum said the DPM Cub cowl width was around 8.5 - 8.75 inches and my Saito 130 TD is 7.5 inches in width...should fit OK. I am going to ask Keleo to do the exhaust pipes for me so that they extend out the proper location on the cowl bottom, right rear. The Saito 130 is well broken in and runs very reliably w/o glow ignition on board. I am beginning to like this engine with it's unique "Harley" sound. The power is, well, e-eh - not that much, about like an early FS 120. That's why I'm hoping it will be enough for the DPM SC.

For those of you using the O.S. 160FT that do not want a large hole in your cowl for the needle valve (I hate holes in my cowl) here's how I did mine. Some of you may already have done this but having the cowl curve under and measuring correctly can be a bear! Put the cowl on using the cowl screws and then place a piece of tape vertically onto the fuselage at the end of the cowl.
Remove the cowl and measure from the tape to the center of your needle valve. Now place the fuselage on a hard surface...not a rug...and measure up to the center of the needle valve. Put the cowl back on again with the screws and using the first measurement you got from the tape measure out again from the edge of the cowl and mark with a pen. Now using scrap balsa or a small dowel (I used a 1/16" dowel) cut the dowel/balsa to the length you got from the hard surface and hold it up to the cowl and mark again with a pen at the top of the dowel. Double check and drill a small hole and it should be right on. Sorry i've been away from the thread lately but between work and waiting for parts to finish my cub i've been a little busy.

Bud

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

[&:]Thanks, Bud...think I'll do the same. I decided to go with the OS 160FT rather than my Saito 130 - I always wanted a 160 twin anyway! It's now on back order along with my DPM Super Cub - should be here in May-June time frame. I also got the EDR-103 glowlite package and the Keleo Exhaust headers (I'm not as handy as you with the pipe bending). Can't wait for these packages to arrive- this thread has gotten me revved:D.

BTW, what do you do if your idle needs adjusting? Did you cut a hole for that?

Bud Faulkner 04-29-2005 08:14 AM

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

Hi Daniel,
You'll like the EDR-103, very nice unit. I didn't do any hole for the idle adjust, was bad enough having to drill a hole for the needle valve and a vent area in the bottom but then the real one had a vent opening. Never really had a problem with the idle adjust once it was set but if I need to I'll adjust with the cowl off and see what happens with some runups. Worth the wait on the cub, I ordered mine in December and got it in july. Keep us posted.

Hi Jim,
Just got home from work. I got everything last week, my tru-turn spinner, 12mm reamer, 18/6 prop, HD switch and my instrument panel has been ordered. Hooked up my pull pull sunday and just need to finish touching up the interior. Hope to have everything done soon for a photo shoot on floats and then it's back to wheels for the maiden. I'll run up the engine in the yard first before I even think of the field to make sure everything is ok, never ran the engine yet. Been kinda busy with work and my three nights a week has turned into four but hope to get back on the cub. The way our weather has been that may not be for several weeks....cold and windy and misty rain lately. Where's spring???? You have yours ready to go yet? Hope it's warmer where you are. Later.

Thanks a lot Orvel, glad you're enjoying yours. Did you mix any rudder in on yours? Here's some interior shots as you requested. The servos are behind the rear seat and batt. and receiver are under the floor. So far the balance is right on. I dropped the instrument panel lower half down and mounted my onboard glow light and charging jack there. Covered it with the same thing I used for the top of the dash.....thin black rubber pad about 1/16" thick from wal mart 33 cents.

orvel 05-14-2005 09:39 PM

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

Thanks for the pictures Bud. It looks great! Yes! I do mix about 20% rudder with mine and that really helps with the turns. You can also mix in some differential on your ailerons and it will have the same effect. I rather do it with rudder but regardless, you need to do this or else when you bank the Cub for a turn it will sort of yaw and doesn't look right, it's just a characteristic of the Cub. By the way, have you weighed yours yet? With the floats and on wheels? Mine came in at an even 17 lbs. dry and I have a 16 oz. tank!

Bud Faulkner 05-14-2005 10:18 PM

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

I haven't weighed mine, no scale! Thinking about buying a fish scale for models. Guessing at 5# for the floats. I already have diff. mixed in my ailerons but was wondering if I should add some rudder mix. Also have a two position switch for flaps. Speaking of flaps...how does yours do with them?

orvel 05-14-2005 11:43 PM

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

Bud, all you need is a bathroom scale to get a good ballpark figure! Just weigh yourself first then get on the scale again holding the airplane. If you have differential already mixed in then try that first, if the turns are good you shouldn't need to mix rudder. In regards to the flaps, they are very effective and allow you to come in steep for short field landings. I only use them on light to no-wind days though, otherwise you don't really need them. Now when you fly yours on floats, that's a different story, they're really going to come in handy especially since you'll be heavier, and they'll give you that extra lift you'll need at the slower speeds for water landings. You will however have to dial in a bit of down elevator when you deploy the flaps, miy setup is 8% at full flaps and that seems to work really well for me.

Bud Faulkner 05-15-2005 03:53 PM

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

Thanks Orvel, I'll keep that 8% in mind. On the bathroom scale...never had one. We just never bothered. Not that we're cheap, just never bothered to see the need.

Ray III 05-15-2005 09:32 PM

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

Group,

I have really pick up a lot of good information for my S'Cub here. You all have done an excellent job with your airplanes.

Unfortunately I will not get my kit till sometime in June, (ordered in March). I have the OS 160 twin, the radio, and on-board glow system and can't wait to get started.

I plan to put an interior in it, I have seen an ad for an interior kit for the DPM PA-18 listed in R/C Report, (not sure if I will go that route yet). I also plan to paint my trim color per a Piper stock paint job, red on white.

You all have put in a lot of time getting everything as right as you have tried. On average, what do you estimate the building time to be?

Regards,

Ray
