RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Oh No! I'd better slow down....i'm getting recognized for my hi speed building, next thing ya know my 2004 model will make it in the 2035 magazines!! [X(]:D:D:D
Thanks Nony |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
FYI,
After reading this thread, I decided to buy the DPM Super Cub. I called last week to place my order and spoke with Sandy. She said they expect the next shipment of Super Cubs to arrive in 6-8 weeks. Sounds and looks like the model is worth the wait. Hope this thread continues to grow more info and photos. Thanks, Andrew |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Good choice Andrew, I waited 7 months for mine. What color? What engine? Hope you'll post your progress with pictures.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hi Bud,
I choose the traditional yellow color scheme. Like alot of guys, I really wanted to use a small gas engine like the Zenoah G26, but I don't think I can bring myself to cut up the cowling and have the large cylinder head hanging out the bottom. A fully concealed 4 stroke engine would look better and probably sound more scale like. I prefer OS engines, so I will probably purchase the 120 or twin 160 engine. This would be my first 4 stroke engine purchase, so I need to start educating myself about their operation and set up. This thread should be very helpful once my kit arrives. Andrew |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hi Andrew,
Get the O.S. FT160 if you can swing the extra bucks, you won't be sorry later. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Greetings Group... Has anyone who has had a Supercub kit ordered for a while and is expecting it in the June shipment, received yours yet?
Ray |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I have had one on backorder from mid march. I called Dave Patrick Models and was told thy would be her in May. Now I am told thy will be in June. I don’t know why it takes them so long to receive their planes. I saw one and it is great so I will wait.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I too ordered, but through my local hobby shop, in mid to late March... After I posted my question, I went to the "horses mouth" and asked DPM directly via e-mail, and was told it will be "at a minimum" of another 5 weeks.
June so far has been a long month, I want to get my hands my kit!!! |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Just talked with DPM about my order expected in June. They told me 5 more weeks. Looks like August now at the earliest.[:o] I have everything else required to complete it on hand, so I'm chomping at the bit.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
You fellas using the OS 160 twin, what brand and size prop are you using? I'm using a pro zinger 18x6 prop and can't get a good loop. It falls out of it or if I try to do a large loop it runs out of steam unless I apply down elevator first and even then its iffy. I was thinking maybe a carbon fiber 18x8 but wanted to see what others are doing. The engine is turning 8200 rpms with the pro zinger.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Not in a position to comment on that rubyred since I still haven't flown mine (don't ask) but Dick Pettit used an 18/6 wood zinger at 1200 low end and 7500 rpm top end I think. I do know when we looped a real one we nosed it over first to get up a little speed going into the loop so if you're applying down elevator in that sense it should loop with no problem? What fuel are you using? I've always used 15% and seems to be ideal for me.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Considering that plane is rated from a 90-1.50 glow it must be a real slug at the lower engine sizes. I'm actually using 20% nitro. Could be I have an engine that is just not putting out the power or maybe not fully broke in yet. There must be 10 tanks through it now. How ever it does fly nice and Ive been please with it.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
This may sound like a dumb question but were you on hi rates or lo rates when looping?
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
rubyred, I know you have a twin 1.60 but I figured I would offer this just as a point of comparison. I'm running a Saito 1.50 turning a Master Airscrew Classic 16X8 at 8800 RPM. I can loop my DPM Cub from "level flight" with authority at only 3/4 throttle, both tight and large loops! A wood Zinger 18x6 at 8200 should be yanking that Cub straight up and over the top with ease. If you're not, I suspect that you're either loosing power on the way up and/or maybe it has to do with your set-up. Did you balance the plane laterally? How much are you weighing?
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
rubyred, I had a OS160 in my Stinson and found I got much better performance with a Zinger 16-8 over an 18-6. The motor will get stronger as it breaks in.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
According to the engine prop size recommendation chart with the engine the 18/6 should work fine but I installed an 16x8 prop on it and will try it later in the week. I want to be able to make those big loops and not have to horse it through. I haven't weighed the cub yet but I'm sure its not much different than most others

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Does anyone know exactly where or in what country the DPM Super Cubs are made?
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Guys,
I'm working on a hanger 9's Cub. Since this seems like Cub land and I'll ask this question. Does anyone know the correct size for tail brace wires.? The ones on the a full-size seem relatively small. Can't seem to find an answer anywhere. If you have photos of your tail brace wires. Please post them. I am using a Magnum 160 Twin with onboard glow driver. Sounds awesome. Using a Keleo creations exhaust. Thanks. Mark Franke |

Mark,
There are several ways to do them, you can use metal straps which is what some guy's do but I used alum. tube. Sorry I don't remember the size but I bought alum tube that the wire would fit into and flattened the end of the tube and drilled a hole. Then I added a small nut (2-56 I think) over the wire and another short piece of alum tube and epoxied it all together. I bolted the alum first to the horiz and vertical tail then roughly sized up the wire length and cut and then inserted with epoxy, that way I got the correct length. Inserting picture of real cub and mine. I really didn't have to add the sleeve above the nut, don't know why I did that but oh well! |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Bud
looks perfect. About what size diameter is the wire.? I can find tubing to match. It looks perfect scale size. Most I've seen are too big Thanks so much Mark |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I just bought either 2-56 or 4-40 12" wire threaded on one end...can't remember which, I'd go check but right now my wife has me cleaning the shed [:o] need I say more.

Could be I have an engine that is just not putting out the power or maybe not fully broke in yet. I haven't check out OS's prop recommendations, but fount it interesting that my G-38 (2.3 cu inches) uses the same size prop!!!! Some full size pics of a Husky on floats, and a well used SuperCub |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Some full size pics of a Husky on floats, and a well used SuperCub Holy cryin out loud! [X(] Well used it is!! Love the husky though. :D Hi ya nony...what's that boy of yours flying these days? |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hi ya nony...what's that boy of yours flying these days? I've got a pair of Byron Husky floats in the shop that I am going to try and fit on the cub...they are huge, so they should be able to keep all 22+ lbs of it afloat!! After 3 years, I finally have a pilot...now I will have to build up that cockpit kit --but the floats come first!! |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hi nony...congrats to him on the left seater! Sounds to me like he's already on the fast track.
Now get busy on those floats and interior and pic's please!! :D |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
The OS 160 twin makes thhe same power as a SAITO 150 but can swing a larger prop.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Someone wanted to see and hear the OS 160 on the DP Super Cub. I uploaded them to "PutFile" and here are the 3 links:

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
pettit,
That is the perfect engine for the plane, looks like you have a lot of power. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Thanks for taking the time to do that Dick.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Just talked to Sandy today at DPM and was told it will be three to four more week before the Super Cubs will be it stock. It looks like mid August now!!
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I ordered a Clipped wing Super Cub today, Sandy says it may ship this week. Yeehaaaaa
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
RC-Sport: Let me know when you receive your Super Cub from DPM. I have had one on order since Mid March and hope to receive it soon.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I was just notified by email that the Super Cubs have finally arrived. I'll be watching for the delivery truck - should be here any day now!:)
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
AS soon as I get my clipped wing version I'll fire off some pics. I'm curious to see if it has flaps, I can't tell from the picture Sandy sent me. I guess I could just ask.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
does any one have one of these great looking planes for sale man oh man what a plane thanks frank

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
For those of you that used the OS160FT, did you leave the tank at the stock height? Or did you lower it?
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub

I lowered mine because of the location of the carb. Here's a picture of how I did mine.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hi guy's, I ordered an ARC version a long, long time ago. They said they didn't get any in this shipment, so I took the last yellow S Cub they had. I just got it and it is too nice to strip the covering and do silk and dope as I had planned with the ARC. I have a couple DP Extra's that were nice, but this cub looks excellent. The covering is nice and tight and everything looks good. I have a new OS 160FT to slide in there. Can't wait to get started. Still collecting all that is needed. Guess I'll do the silk and dope on a Balsa USA 1/3 Super Cub this winter.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
rc sport:
I used a OS 160 twin and installed the tank in the mounting arrangement provided in the kit. I was reluctant to cut up the foward structure to lower the tank, the airplane is built very light, and I didnt want to compromise it. I also talked to Dave Patrick at the WRAMS show and he didnt think it was a good idea to cut it up. I run the engine wth a glow driver and have no problems with the engine flooding. The OS 160 is one of the best engines on the market IMHO and it idles at such a low speed you can almost count the prop (well almost). It hand starts on a single plug and jumps into RPM when you light the second one. To avoid any possibility of fuel draining into the engine while sitting I keep the throttle closed, and I generally fill the tank when I'm ready to fly. With the cub sitting on its tail it sort of limits a potential draining problem anyway. I have a Sig J3 cub with the very same arrangement and have no problems in the many years that I've flown it. You will enjoy the DP cub, its everything that you would expect it to be, given its high quality design |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hey can anybody give me the width of the cowl on the clipped wing cub...Also the all up weights on the clipped wing.
Thanks |
