I have both the Hanger 9 J 3 and the DP Super Cub ,I don't think that the H9 Super Cub is a rehash of the J3.The H9 already has a parts list (windshield,cowl,gear,wing struts,ect.)The J3 windshield would fit at the top of the cabin but not at the instrument panel,looks like it might fit now and it cost only $13.49.The price of this plane is going to be cheaper than the new DP Super Cub was going to cost.They already have the manuel out http://www.horizonhobby.com/pdf/HAN4540-Manual.pdf .I would love to have this plane.You can see it here http://www.horizonhobby.com/products...arf-HAN4540#t1

This looks to be a great flying PA-18, and the paint scheme is sweet to, except for the black N numbers. I don't like the 18.5# weight figure, although I would hope they are maybe including the floats at that high of a weight for a 1/4 scale Cub. My DP PA-18 only weighs 14.5 lbs painted. I don't care what anyone says, a 19 lb Cub will fly ok/good, but it will not fly great/floaty like a Cub should fly. Its the same problem E-flite has with their little .25 71" PA-18. Its a great sport plane, but she sure don't fly scale. [&o]

Guys,

Glad to see you discussing this model as we are very excited to bring this model to market!

The models are on the water and we expect to begin shipping to dealers and customers the first week of November.

This Super Cub model is based upon our existing and popular 1/4 J3 Cub platform with many scale upgrades and building modifications. I think you will find that the model is rather nicely detailed and offers a number of optional accessories such as a full depth cockpit, navigation lights, float option, and of course for you electric guys an EP battery tray/motor mounting box.

The model that is shown flying in the video is powered with a Saito 182 twin using a Mcdaniel's onboard glow which requires a 4500 mAh 4 cell battery (7+oz) bringing this models AUW to 17lbs 6 oz. This AUW also includes the full depth cockpit kit(6.8 oz with glue) and the 1/4 scale pilot figure(5.8 oz). If you remove these 2 items from the model then you will end up with an AUW of 16lbs 10 oz. The model flies light and has plenty of power to do all the cool Cub maneuvers.

The weight range givenf on this model reflects the heaviest & lightest setup I have flown to date. The Power 110 on 8S is the heaviest setup due to the battery placement which required 16 oz of nose weight to achieve the forward C/G listed in the manual so do not think this model is heavy as it flies as expected with a very lightly loaded wing. If you use the lighter Zenoah G26 engine and keep all your radio gear forward and do not install the optional items noted then you could easily target a weight under the minimum weight range specified.

I think you will find the Super Cub has all the great flight characteristics you would look for along with all the scale bits that make it great to own. I could go on about the differences in this model and other Super Cubs from the past and present, but I am prejudiced so order yours today and have fun!

That sounds GREAT Bill. If we can keep it at 16 lbs with a 1.20 4-stroke, that's all I'm worried about. I love the way my H9 J-3 flies with a 1.20 4-stroke, so if its like that, then I'm pumped. Can you please tell us if the N numbers are a Vinyl type removable material?

My DPM Super Cub is over 10 years old this year. Any others out there still flying? I'm still using the original OS 160 twin with Keleo exhaust. It's still a blast to fly - one of my all time favorite airplanes. If I ever ruin this one, heaven forbid, I'll get a Hanger 9 Super Cub to replace it.

I occasionally fly mine also. It was the last one they ever sold.  I have thought about selling it, but I don't think anyone would want to give me even close to what I have invested. However, some of the arfys are costing quite a bit.

I mentioned in an earlier post that the H9 J3 cub canopy was not a good fit as a replacement for the DP due to the higher arched nose of the H9 J3 cub. However, I did try a canopy from the H 9 super cub and it is an EXACT fit! There is a strong relationship between the H9 super cub and the DP super cub. Maybe made in the same factory or with the same tooling. in any event, for all the DP lovers out there, the H9 cub is as close to a replacement as you will find today.

I sold mine a a few years ago and regret selling it. For those needing spares, Fiberglass Specialities sell the windscreen and cowl as well as the wheel pants for the clipped wing version. http://www.fiberglassspecialtiesinc.com

DPM supercub NIB
 

I have the opportunity to purchase a NIB DPM Piper supercub PA-18 1/4 scale. The ARF was purchased a few years ago and never assembled. How difficult is it find parts since they are no longer in production?

Hard to say.. could be very difficult.. therefore you need to sell it to me! :D

(but seriously.. unless busted a wing or such, likely that standard hardware for linkages, etc.. should suffice if something needed replacing).

I as well have a yellow one , still in the box . I started puttin LG on and quit , then i accidently let ? something fall off on top of the plane behind the cabin area, bought some covering to repair it . I have an OS twin to go in the Cub

The new Hangar 9 1/4 Super Cub is a very close rendition to the DP Cub. I have both and parts seem to be interchangeable. Cowl; windshield; landing gear; wing tube and possibly the wing too. I can say for sure that the DP S Cub is constructed from way better wood which makes it a bit tougher.

Anyone have a landing gear assy and wing tube for sale to the DP cub.

I will try the Hangar 9 wing tube in my DP cub and check for tolerances. I can also do some comparisons on the landing gear. Let you know tomorrow.

Ok, the wing tubes are the same diameter and length. The landing gear should work ok, but the H-9 fuselage is 1/4" wider than the DP.

I know I am sooo late coming to this thread but I just came across this thread after finding, completely by mistake, a model of the Dave Patrick 1/4 Scale Piper PA-18 Super Cub. Or, at least that is what I think it is... Maybe someone could help me verify if, in fact, that's what I have. I'll attach the pictures off what I've got here, that is, if anyone is still looking at this thread! I came upon this model completely by accident and the kindness of the previous owner.

I had purchased a replacement Hobbico Nexstar that I bought (and subsequently destroyed) for my son from ebay. It was a local pickup only in the Houston area. I live in Baton Rouge so my brother-in-law agreed to pick it up for me and bring it back the next time he came home from Houston. Anyway, the seller dropped off the plane as promised but then also threw in this Dave Patrick Super Cub for free! I thought at first it was a Hangar 9 PA-18 but after examining what I saw in the pictures that my Brother-in-law took and the Hangar 9 manual, I decided it wasn't a Hangar 9 product. So, I began scouring the internet trying to determine exactly what I had. Well, to make a long story short ( I know it's too late for that!), I find myself here.

I have spent all day reading through this forum thread trying to educate myself a little on the history, build issues and options. I am hoping someone can confirm that I that this is, indeed, a Dave Patrick Model and offer any advice that might be helpful in restoring it to any airworthy condition! If there is anyone who has the original instruction/assembly manual, I would gladly pay you for it, if you were prepared to part with it. I would also be willing to pay you to have it reproduced or uploaded so I could use it for reference.

I tried to find a Dave Patrick Super Cub many years ago...I gave up and then Hangar 9 came out with their version so I bought one and never looked back. Now, even H9 has discontinued their cub. Seems like the good quality cubs are always a limited edition series when they're sold on the retail market so when they are available you grab one or two before they're gone forever.

yeah, that's the story of my life: a day late and a dollar short! I keep falling in love with RC Planes (and motorcycles) that have been discontinued. Then find myself having to hunt down everything I need, piece by piece. I'll start keeping my eyes open for another one as a spare! I'd eventually like to get one that has the original markings. The one I've found has got military markings (US roundels) on the wings and fuselage along with the civilian N-Number. For some reason, the previous owner pulled the letter "D" off the tail number as well. Once I get my hands on it, I'll see if I can get the roundels off and return it to the original look!

That's good advice. I went over to Horizon and checked out what they have for the H9 cub: it isn't much. Most of the parts show as "Not Available". They do have the small parts bag available which I will probably get. I still don't have physical possession of the plane yet. I'll see what's missing after I get it in my hot little hands! Hopefully, it won't need anything too major...

Does anyone have any experience to confirm whether the H9 Super Cub parts will fit the DPM Super Cub or not?

My model is missing the aluminum wing tube. Anyone know what size O.D. and length of the wing tube for this plane?

I can say for sure the wing tube , landing gear , and wind shield is the same as the hanger 9 cub I ordered replacements from hanger 9 for my DPM Cub and they all worked the super cub is not the same, the size on the wing tube is od .748 id .690 length 32 inches hope this helps

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. I wasn't sure anyone was still following this old thread. I went back and read all 53 pages and I certainly picked up on the level of frustration folks were having with DPM. Too bad they never could get things going inhouse or with CERMARK. It was frustrating to read, I can only imagine the amount of frustration having to live through it! was busy flyiing UH-60's in Iraq all when all that was going on..

Anyway, I've looked on Tower Hobbies, Horizon Hobbies and ebay looking for spare parts, There is very few parts left: mostly major sections - fuselage, wing, elevator, etc. They do have a lot of the hardware but I'm waiting until I have the plane in hand before I start buying any parts. My brother-in-law picked up the plane for me in Houston where he lives. He's planning to bring it over at the end of the month on his next visit home. But, from looking at pictures and talking to him on the phone, it seems like the only parts missing, so far, are the wing tube and the side windows.

I haven't been able to post pictures of the plane yet. Apparently, I don't have enough posts on the forum for that privilege yet. However, I am convinced that it is a DCM model based on all the photos I found on this thread. My brother in law isn't a flyer but seems to think the plane was never assembled completely. The covering on top of the fuselage has been removed. Maybe, damaged in shipment or crash. Although, the level of completion I can see in the photos lead me to believe it was never completed or flown. It has a strange mix of civilian and military markings. The "D" from the tail number has been removed on both sides of the fuselage and US roundels of different eras were placed on the wing tips and the tail. There's one with similar markings page 51 on this forum with the same graphics ( Post #1270 by crazystick). Maybe the previous owner got the idea from those pictures.

I certainly interested in your offer to have the manual copied. I'd be glad to pay you whatever it costs for reproduction and shipping. Or if they can just scan it and e-mail it to me, I can have it printed and bound on my end. I'd be happy to pay you either way.

I'll go back and study your engine installation posts to see what I can learn. I haven't decided yet which engine to power it with. My buddy at the flying field is trying to push me toward gas but I think I favor a 4-stroke glow. I don't know, we'll see...

Does anyone know which brand and color was used in the manufacturer of the yellow-covered DPM Super Cub. I will have to cover the entire top of the fuselage and would like to use the same covering if it's still available.

Not sure that your still following this thread bu I was admiring your YS 140 Sport Installation. I'm currently exploring powerplant options for my DPM Super Cub. I was just wondering how well it performed for you, any problems you had, or if you ran into installation issues when you mounted it. I know it's been awhile since you built you Super Cub but do you remember why you selected it over the other options?
