What...no one got one for christmas?? Bummer

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Well, I didnt get mine at Christmas, it came a lot earlier this year. Over the holidays, I did spend a lot of time working on the cub , and I am now up to starting the wings and hinges. ( Who finishes ARFs in 15 hours?... maybe Dick Petit?) The worst part so far was those awful hinge slots on the tail surfaces. Another thing, I really dont like the cable supports between the fin and the stab....I wonder if they are really necessary to support the loads. It is a cub, right? I dont expect to do 3D. I used Du Bro 1/4 scale tail support rods instead of the cables in the kit, it looks more finished than the crimped cables with shrink tubing, but it still looks foreign on a cub. I have yet to go back and figure why the landing gear has no flex. I had no trouble with the pull-pull rudder, a first time use for me. The covering was nice and tight when the kit arrived, but now there are a lot of wrinkles. I am wondering if I should shrink them back as they appear, or leave them alone and do it all at once.
So far, the kit has been an absolute joy to work on. My wife wonders where I was for the last two weeks. |

Glad to hear i'm not the only one savoring mine. Here's the real deal on the stab cables, this is on a J3...I imagine the super cub is the same or similar. I had some trouble with my landing gear flexing also, I think the paint got on it but I slid the covers off some to expose the springs and twisted the gear some to break loose the paint and put some 3 in 1 oil on them and pushed down a few time and they now flex. My first time with a pull pull system too but haven't gotten to that point yet, i'm working on an interior right now. Saving the wings for last and will get my wrinkles out after all is finished. Thinking of adding a lighting system per February issue of MAN page 90. Electrodynamics makes a great set! It was done on a DPM super cub for those of you who may not have seen it!

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Boy, am I out in left field. Your pictures prompted me to go to the supercub web site ( I should have done this earlier) and I looked at the pictures of full size cubs, and lo and behold, they have tail struts! I guess its not so foreign after all for those who know better. I should have known, I flew a J3 cub from Des Moines Iowa to Stillwater Okla when I was in college after an intermural flying meet. I should have looked back at the tail.
My only excuse is I learned to fly in a Aeronca Champ. Old age too. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Ahhh....an aeronca champ, the plane that got me started on loving cubs and decathlons. Had a speedee built aeronca (who remembers those?) Good web site for the super cub but I couldn't find any picture's there of the tail bracing...still looking.

Bud
The site I found was www.supercub.org/gallery/index.php There are a lot of pictures, interior and exterior, and on some of the closer shots you can make out the tail struts Ric |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Thanks Ric, that's where I usually go but with over 1700 picture's to look at it takes forever with a dialup. Lots of good shots though.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
here are a few pics of my 1/3 scale super cub--a reproduction of my full size plane -the pics show details of tail wires , stab mount , cockpit ,etc. have more if folks need 'em

the tail bracing pics are of real one -am looking for model pics of tail maybe these will blow up enough? at any rate - they are made up of brass and Dubro forks filed to scale profile -exactly as pics of real one-hope it helps

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Very very nice Phil....The N number looks familiar, was yours the one the hanger 9 ARF was modelled after? Where in the world did you get the plans? Thanks again, excellent workmanship.
Forgot to ask...where did you get the wheel pants? Bud |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Here I thought , Bud was the super detailer ? :^) ..........te

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Haaaaa. I could do that, I could do that....NOT! Maybe if I could go back about 30 years and my eyesite wern't failing and I had another 8 years to build like it took me to do my heli and I had unlimited funds and if social security gave me a decent raise and and and :D

well- I drew the plans - mostly from measuring my plane -took three tries for virtualy every part - thought I knew exactly how they looked since I'd rebuilt the full size twice - wrong -
yes it was the model for the hangar nine - they did a decent job too - I have one and fly it a lot. The cowl and wheel pants are from my plugs -fiberglass- there are 23 ABS parts from my molds that I vacformed-such as the steps on the pants, aileron cable covers, venturies etc. I used Balsa USA's windshield, rib , and most of their gear -wonderful folks to work with. |

btw-thanks for the compliments - it was a labor of love -would you believe I also made an L-21(super cub L-4 ) from the same drawings and pics of the full size put a 3w 80 in it and used balsa usa's floats -fly on land and twice a week on water-ultimately I intend to make the floats amphib-big job to get it right though

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Bud, Mine are enroute but not as outstanding - as I know yours will be , After all I have a plain jane yeller - not as much colour choices as if ONE had a White Cub :^) OH , get out and buy ya self some batteries - weather can't be all that bad UP there ?? I have attempting callin numerous times , as well as e mailing DPM - still can't get thru or get an answer ?? duh .....tom e

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Don't expect much on my graphics Tom....just got the basics, tail number, piper super cub logo for behind the rear window, super cub in script for the cowl and no step for the lift struts.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I have a question about the DP Super cub. I am finally starting to put mine together. I am installing a YS 140 sport on DuBron mounts.
After mounting the engine to the firewall, it came out with less down thrust than the front of the cowel. The cowel is pre drilled and we have to match the engine to the cowel. I had to add down thrust to get the prop to match the angle on the front of the cowel. My question is do your super cubs have some down thrust as well as fight thrust? |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Handy Andy, I'd go back and check everything again per the instructions where it states stand the fuse on it's tail and position the engine so it centers on the cowl opening and is the correct distance from the firewall. The firewall already has the correct side and down thrust built in, not sure i'd want to add any.
Bud |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hi Bud, Thanks for your reply. I took your advise on not adding down thrust on the DPM cub. I installed the engine on the fire wall where it belongs, in line with the cross hair lines. The cowel on my plane was not well drilled, only three of the four holes line up ok. The angle on the front of the cowel did not match the fire wall. With the engine installed, a small adjustment on the two holes on the bottom of the cowel brings everything in alignment.
I am not crazy about the top window being held by four small screws. I don't think it will hold up to much use. I made up a frame out of 1/4" brass strips soldered at the four corners and painted it with cub yellow enamel. The four small holes are now in the brass frame and will hold up to a lot of usage. Installed on the plane, it looks great. I will send pictures as soon as I can figure out how to put them on the air. How do you send pics? |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hi Andy, glad it worked out for you, I think someone else had posted before about the cowl holes being off. To post picture's when you hit reply there's a note at the bottom that says click here to upload...you first have to have picture's in a folder then you can browse to them and add. Looking forward to seeing them. I too have some work to do on the top window...think i'll add some 1/16" smoke plex.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Looks Good Andy, that should hold real well. How about some pics of your engine installation?
Tom old pal....not behind on pic taking, just behind on having something to take. :) Progress is slow lately but will get this potato off the couch soon. :D |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I finally finished it. Well, not really, but I did finish all of the assembly steps. Now I have to do all of the "adjustment" steps, servo travel, mixing, lead dress, fuel line tie down, etc. That means I am 95% complete and 95% to go. The flap and aerilon hinging was easy, nothing like the stab and rudder ordeal. The struts went together like an erector set, and were right on the first try. First check on CG shows tail heavy, using an OS 160 twin. I plan to add a glo lighter up front, I hope that balances it without moving anything else. I also need to make the exhaust pipe extensions. After seeing the examples of what some of you guys do in detailing, I have to seriously figure out how to dress it up in the cockpit. The airplane is so pretty, it cries out to look good inside too. Oh well, maybe 150% to go.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Keep us posted on finishing the interior of your DPM cub. I will be doing mine and will be interested in what you come up with. I do not want to spend $50 on a picture set. I did see a real super cub at an air show and I took lots of pics on the plane and the interior. I will post my progress, perhaps we can swap ideas.

Ric, what glo system are you using? I bought the electrodynamics setup for mine. I'm working on my interior now...got some pictures from the super cub .org web site. Still a long way to go. Not scale by any means but it does dress it up a little. Here's one pic of the rear section and one showing a portion of the side panels and seats. Just 3/32" balsa, I filled the grain with moistened drywall paste and sanded most of that off and painted with LustreKote...no weight to speak of.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Bud
Looks good, better than where I am right now. I plan to use an Electrodynamics 103, I have one on another 160 and it works like a charm. Maybe I can put the status light on the instrument panel if it isnt too far out of scale. I like the idea of hiding the switches and fuel valve behind the cowl cheeks, will probably do that. Cant work this weekend, will be in your neck of the woods (Laytonsville Md) with the grand kids. Andy As soon as I figure out how to work this digital camera and get the pix on line, will do. Check the super cub web site mentioned a few posts back, there are a lot of pictures free. I plan to go to Oshkosh again this summer, I probably can get pictures of cubs, but way too late to use. Every time I go I take pictures of "someday I will build that" airplanes. I missed up on the cub. Ric |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Bud, Who did you get to cut your lettering, or did you do it yourself? ;)
Scott |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Ric,
I know Laytonsville well, used to go thru there every friday when I took my mom to leisure world to get her hair done before she passed away. Don't know how long your staying but gonna be 60 monday and warm all next week! At least that's what they say hmmm. If you wanna chat about cubs my cell is 240-674-4000 sj3cub, I had cajun r/c specialties do them. Also had them do NO STEP (4) for my lift struts. There's another guy in Houma La. that does them but can't remember his site. I understand he does excellent work. Bud |

Hi Bud, I'm sending pics of my engine installation. It's a YS140sport fits in great. Your cub is looking great. What did you use to make the seats? I thought about using foam and painting. I have a ways to go before I get there. Now that I see your cub, I wish that I had the whit one. The yellow will look good.
