RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Flight report...
Outstanding day! This plane definitly turned heads at the field. Started the engine and you could see heads turning. At our field people will give you the air to maiden a plane so I had plenty of onlookers. I slowly taxied out onto the runway, tried to keep it scale like. I taxied once down the length of the runway, the twin was running very smooth and sounding great. I turned it into the wind slowly applying power. I relaxed the elevator ,the tail popped up and she tracked straight as an arrow. I mean very little rudder input was required to keep it straight. It was so easy I let it run on the runway probably 3/4 of the way before I applied elevater and it climbed as graceful and scale like as I've ever seen. It took about 3 beeps of right alieron to trim it and obtain level flight. Had I balance it laterally that would not have been necessary. I flew the pattern a couple of times and and did a low and slow fly by and you could hear the ooos and ahhs from the on-lookers. Setting up for landing was no problem this plane will fly slooooow. Greased it in, okay it bounced once, and let it coast to a stop. Then I breathed :) I did think it was a tad under powered but will see how it does once its broke in. In summary this plane was well worth the money ( if she only knew) and if you want a head turner then you have to get one... if you can find one. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
it will be a head turner!! frank, congratulations will i ever get one or two[&:]
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Wow, sounds very impressive. Glad to hear everything went smooth. How many flights did you get in? What made you feel it might be a tad under powered? Any pics of the maiden?

I got in 3 flights. It maxed out at 7300 with a Zinger 18x6. I riched it down to about 6800 for break in. I know its a Cub but it was very slow and sluggish. I flew pretty much full throttle the entire flight. Once its broken in I am going to experiment with props. I am real curious to hear what you and others think of this combination!
Don't misunderstand me it was a great flying plane, I was just expecting a little more power. No in flight pics but my son did take some of it on the ground. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hill, great to hear about your successful maiden but I think that's too much prop for that engine guy! I know it's not a true comparison, but for example I'm running a Saito 150 single cylinder (which is just a tad smaller in displacement than the 160 Gemini) and I'm swinging a 16 x8 at 9300 rpm full bore. Needless to say, my full wing DPSC hauls ***** and I have to throttle back to fly it scale. Everybody at the field tells me that it's overpowered, and it is, but I'm saving all that power for when I put it on floats, I'll need it then he! he! You might want to try a 16x8 or 16x10 and see how it goes. On another note that's the scale size prop for the Cub!
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
You may be right Orvel. The book says for scale/sport flying use 16x8, 18x6. 18x8, 20x6. it says to use an 18x6 for break in, I guess to keep the rpms down. After about a gallon maybe I should drop down to 16x8.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hill,
See my post #667 in this same thread. I am turning a Mejlick 18X8 around 7000. You can imagine, plenty of power. And it's a clipped wing. However, IT IS STILL VERY SLUGGISH. I can go faster, It does NOT like it. It wants to fly slow and steady, it is a joy. If you want to push the enveloppe, it becomes sluggish and a poor flier. If you want acrobatics, it's the wrong plane, if you want slow and elegant, nothing beats it. Happy flying and enjoy it for what it is. Best george |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hill, I'll gaurantee you an increase in performance with a Menz or Bolly prop. I was running a standard 20-10 Zinger on my OS 300 FS Twin in a Christen Eagle bipe and couldn't get much vertical performance. A buddy gave me a Menz 20-10 when I broke the Zinger one day and I couldn't believe the difference. Just that prop change gave me near unlimited vertical. I also like to run 20% four stroke fuel like Powermaster 20-20 or Wildcat 20%. Pretty zippy stuff.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Gbrod, slow and elegant accurately describes the maiden. I'm not looking for a rocket but I would like a little more umph to get out of trouble if needed.
Tripledeucer, interesting, there is another prop that starts with a B, can't recall the name. It is a real pretty prop. I've always heard that if you increase pitch its best to decrease in diameter to prevent the loss of rpm. so how about a 17x8 Bolly or that other one that starts with a B. Where is a good place to buy these type of high end props? |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hill, Your thinking of the Bielia props. I have no expierience with them other than I own one I have never run yet. If you do a Google search for Bielia props, you will come up with a few hits. Probably the most notable is TNT Landing gear. I have used the Mejzlik carbon props on alot of different motors and they are an excellent choice also. Desert Aircraft has them along with the Bollys, I believe.

Here is a shot of the Bielia on my Cub. One other thing I have found is when you run a good carbon prop, it will run smoother and you most likely will be able to run the next size bigger than your old wood prop. More efficiant in my estimation.

Here is another angle. This prop is a 16-10

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Triple Duecer, (Mark) - This is a very late reply. I spoke with Sandy at DP. Gave them CC info, put a yellow one on BO. She says they will ship, first come, first serve. She did not guarantee that I will get one, but took the order, said wait till summer, this year. I don't know if it is early summer, late, etc.
I had thought about trying to find one somewhere, but thinking the later production SC's may have some improvements since they have been in the field for some time now. Vince (Crankpin) Hobe Sound, FL [email protected] |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Triple Deucer, thats the one I was thinking of. Man that looks nice. I've got to get one of those. I'll bet that 16x10 would make a world of difference on mine.
Thanks Joe |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I was optimistic once... I have have a white one orderd through the LHS since either late February or early March of 2005. Last word I had was what you heard... maybe by Summer. Not sure what year, but still hoping it is this year. I've got the OS FT 160, glow driver, radio, and a few small items waiting. I already used the wheels for the DPM Cub on a 25 year old Basla USA 1/4 scale Cub with an OS 120 FT, and the servos in a Funtana 90.
I am thinking of ordering the Keleo exhaust since it will take a while, and then there are the SWB stand-offs to only do it right. I am sure I will have everything, I mean everything, by the time the kit comes in. Then I am sure the weather here in Illinois will be pure crap. On a much lighter side. All of the projects I have seen on this forum have looked GREAT. Everyone looks to have some nice flying airplanes and have done a great job getting them into the air. At least the wait has given me a little education on what hardware to consider. At least I didn't have to invent the wheel here. Thanks to everyone for their input. Hope they all keep flying... Ray |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Thanks for the information on the props! I just recieved my new OS 1.60 FT, Keleo exhaust, and standoffs yesterday. I am hoping to have it mounted by the end of the weekend. Ill get some pictures up. Hang in there on the wait, its worth it!

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hill, what on board glow system are you running?
Thanks |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Flyn,
Maxx products Deluxe system for Twins, easy set-up. Just follow the directions, it works great. Comes with 3600mah battery and charger. I think it was around $75.00. Hill |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
This is the one I bought from Electro Dynamics. I have been happy with their other stuff.
http://www.electrodynam.com/cgi-loca...html?E+scstore |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I agree ElectroDynamics makes some great stuff. I have two of their on-board glow systems, one on the SC and the other one on my Lancair, and never had a bit of problems.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
It looks like its about $30.00 cheaper than the MPI.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
For $40 the ED dosen't come with a battery, charger, or plug leads, but can be had for another $46. I didn't see it on the website but you can get the accessory package EDR1038A without the charger for $31.
What does the MPI have for $75 ? |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hill, does yours plug into the throttle?
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
The MPI comes with 3600 battery, charger, LED indicator, toggle switch.
Flyn, On the MPI you plug the throttle servo into the unit and the unit into the throttle slot on the RX. It also has a lead to plug into an extra channel. This enables you to over ride the auto shut off if you need to light a cylinder in flight. The toggle switch is a safety measure to prevent unintentional glow lighting. I have mine programmed to come on at 1/4 throttle or less. Its really very user freindly. Hill |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I just picked up the June issue of Fly RC. Frank Tiano does a review of the SC in it. He is using the MPI glow driver and likes it. Most everything he says is stuff we already know about the SC. He is using the Saito 182 twin and says it has unlimited power for this plane.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I saw that review. I heard there is a review out in RC Report on the clipped wing. I can't find a copy of it anywhere. Too bad you can't purchase a copy online.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I never see RC Report anywhere either. Just hear people talk about it once in a while. I guess you have to live in a big city with a hobby shop or something, to see it.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Flyn,
How about some pictures? I want to see some progress :D Its been too windy here to fly today. Its supposed to be windy tomorrow too. [:@] How are you routing the antenna? |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
RC REPORT MAG ! The best RC mag out there. RCM is toast, MAN is ads cover to cover, and some girl doing the editorials. Nothing wrong with a girl doing anything, but all geared to marketing and promotion. Pays the bills I guess.
If you can't find a copy of RC Report at your local hobby shop, here is info for suscribing: Subscription Dep't. 888-727-3767. Open 0800 -1700. That is central time zone. Monday thru Thursday only. Closed from 1200 to 1300 each day. Cost: $19.00 one year, $36.00 two years. Go for it, call them up, the call is free. Crankpin (Vince) Hobe Sound, FL AMA 52779 |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
RCR has the most honest reviews I have ever seen. I guess they buy all of their review items so they don't owe any favorable words where they really don't belong as opposed to the reviews the manufacturers department plugs into most other magazines.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Someone at the field had a copy of RC Report today and I was able to read the review on the clipped wing cub. I'll say this for them, the review was very detailed and seemed to tell it like it really is. Dick Pettit seemed to be pleased with the plane and engine combo. So maybe I'm premature with my opinion of being a tad under powered. He was using a 18x6 APC. He said he flew at half throttle most of the time.
After thumbing thru the magazine today, If I was going to subscribe to a RC magazine then RC Report would be my choice. There seemed to be more information and a little less advertising than the others. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
If someone could help me here, I would appreciate it. I have read all the threads on here about engine selection, and have foud several options. I would like to stick with gas due to clean up and sound. Has anyone heard of someone putting the new Brillelli 25 in it? My cub is on its way(if it isnt backordered) and i would like to see if this engine would fit. Now what i need, is for someone with the plane to take a few measurements of the inside of the cowl for me, and tell me if this engine would fit. I really appreiate te help guys.
Dimensions- Length, back of prop to backplate - 5.5 in. Width, muffler to carb - 5.5 in. Height, plug to bottom most part of engine - 6.75 in. |

ORIGINAL: Hill202 Flyn, How about some pictures? I want to see some progress :D Its been too windy here to fly today. Its supposed to be windy tomorrow too. [:@] How are you routing the antenna? Well sorry to report I am no further than I was a week ago other than test fitting the Keleo muffler to the engine. The Activities Coordinator (wife) had me all tied up with outings, and I had to finish the deck. [:o] But if all goes well i should be back on track by the end of the week. I couldn't even sneak out to the field this weekend. Ill get some pics up in the next night or so. I have not routed my antenna yet. I did read the plastic tube inside the top fuselage was supposed to house the antenna. Any thoughts? |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
well yall im getting my friends piper cub a sig model that about maybe 10yrs+ old and has a twin cylinder four stroke 1.08 sounds like a harley and very scale for only 650 ready to fly just add reciever and transmitter wich i already had i test flew it three take offs and landings and a loop roll really nice!!!!
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Flyn,
I did not use the tube that was inside the fuse. I did not want to run the antenna that close to the pull pull cables. It would probably have been okay to route it that way, but I've read that you could possibly get interference from the cables. I ran mine thru the bottom and glued a peice of nyrod to the bottom of the fuse and routed it thru there. You can't see it very well and it gave me some peace of mind. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hill, I ran my antenna through the tube provided in the fuselage and it makes for a nice neat installation with the antenna minimally protruding out of the fuselage. Although I must admit I ditched the stock cables and opted for the Dubro 4-40 pull-pull system (which comes with insulated cables) concerns about interference wasn't the reason I chose the Dubro, for me it was more of a quality/reliability issue where the insulation would prevent any kind of fraying. Bottom line though, I haven't had a bit of problems.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Spackler, your engine will fit just fine. The only thing is that the plug and part of the head will stick out the bottom. This is why the twin four strokers are such a good choice. They fit in the cowl without sticking out and sound awesome.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I will go with the OS 160T. Has anyone seen the Cactus Aviation 24cc gas engine used in the DP SC? Trying to eliminate the glow fuel mess.
Also, I have a SC on backorder with DP. Any word on production/delivery? Crankpin (Vince) Hobe Sound, FL [email protected] ================================================== =========================================== |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I have a 3w 28 in my new DP Clipped Wing. Would it be extremely over powered?. Looks nice at least...
Thanks ! |
