RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
I flew the larger one of these today, and with the C.G. set at recommended the plane had two problems.
- Not enough down thrust. We added 2 degrees of down thrust. - Still tail heavy. The C.G. on the larger ( the smaller plane will also be proportional ) plane needs to come forward at least 1 - 1 1/2"!!! That tip stall you saw was because the C.G. is too far back. The plane was at stall speed w/o dropping the nose. I had exactly the same experience as you. Try moving it forward and perform a mid power turn. The nose may drop a bit, but there should be no adverse yaw. Then at altitude, try slower and slower turns. When set properly there should be almost no tendancy to drop a wing in a stall. |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
Great tips you guys, i will go ahead and replace the nose wheel wire before maiden. I fly off grass too so i won't be using the wheel pants on the first flights. I can't wait!
|
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
I love mine...
I just hate the nose gear....is there somewhere we can new wheel pants ??? Sam |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
I'd look at one of the Robart nose wheel struts. They will hold up better and look very scale like.
NP should be able to sell you replacement pants, but you could also use white wheel pants from other manufacturers and simply apply Ultra or Mono-coat on them to match the existing scheme. I almost always pull of the pants until I've flown the plane for a while. It's a good practice to engage in while you are getting the bugs out of any new plane. You never know when you need to make a quick dead stick landing. |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
What size Robart strut would you go with ???
Sam |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
Nitromodels did not have this in stock and I got tired of waiting. Found one online for only $20 more than their retail.
I have always liked the cessna model but never found a 50 size that was scale enough. This one looks great! Looks like I need to find a replacement nose gear, has anybody had luck with the Robart Oleo? I will be putting a OS .46LA on it that I bought cheap from a guy at work. I will probably mount inverted as I do on most of my airplanes so I can avoid cutting the cowl on the sides. I will also probably go with an inverted muffler to direct the exaust out the bottom. Anymore flight reports? |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
Where did you find one ???
I'm looking for two more !!! :) Sam |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
There was a guy on eBay that was selling it with a Skysport 6ch for $299 BIN, I have no use for a radio as I already have a 9CAPS. I asked him how much for just the aircraft. He originally said $200, so I told him it was $135 on Nitro Models site, so he told me $185 + shipping.
Well, I dont mind paying a little extra but $50 over retail is not fair. So, I waited until the auction ended with no bids and told him I would give $185 with shipping. He accepted and I paypal'd him the money this morning. It would have been about $165 on Nitro Models site with shipping. The funny thing is, I stumbled upon this one because he didnt have CMP in the title of his auction. I have searched all over the internet and have not been able to find anybody with them in stock. I emailed Nitro Models and posted on their support forum on RCU, they said 3-4 weeks about 1 week ago. I got impatient and decided the extra $20 is worth getting it sooner. I hope you find them or Nitro Models gets them in stock soon! |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
Like I said I love the plane, I just hate the hardware....
Don't trust those EZ-Connectors for your Aileron and Flap servos...I switched them all out... Sam |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
I usually don't use the hardware, I dont even like most of the stuff that Great Planes sends with their arf's.
I usually use Z bends with a metal clevis on the end. And I'm sure its over kill but usually use 4-40 threaded stuff. I am excited about an airplane this size with the detail like Corrigated control surfaces, flaps, and plug in wings. Do the horizontal stabs plug in too? I just got an email that my ARF shipped today and will be here friday via FedEx. |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
The horizontal stab is not designed to be plug in but it has the same principle as the wing. i guess you could mod it to be plug in.
I installed my .70 4c inverted. i rather cut the cowl on the bottom than on one side. i also installed a remote glow starter. |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
So does the horizontal stab have an aluminum tube like the wing? I do not mind gluing the horizontal on, I am building a cub right now and as many great planes models you have to put glue on the stab then slide it in, well...all of your epoxy runs down the fuse, then you have to clean it up before it cures.
I mounted my engine in my UCD .46 inverted with a remote glow starter, the cub I am about finished with has a Magnum .52 4 stroke inverted and will have a remote glow starter when I put the cowl on. The one in my UCD has been that way for over a year and never had any problems. I agree about the cowl, I would rather cut up the bottom than put any holes on the sides, I want it be as scale as possible. |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
Yes it has an aluminum tube like the wing. It also has a couple small brass tubes towards the front for alignment. I sanded the fiberglass a little and used 6 min epoxy since there's no wood for it to soak in and it didn't run down the fuse.

RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
A guy in my club has this plane and cant get it to fly. It has over a pound of nose weight but it still acts tail heavy. It gets what looks likes plenty of speed he gives it a little up elevator and it tip stalls. Any suggestions.
|
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
Does he have the right down thrust? Also, make sure elevators come up evenly. I had to mount the elevator servo in a different configuration than the one recommended so the elevators would move exactly the same.
One more thing, check the longitudinal balance. he may have a wing significantly heavier than the other. Does it always go in the same direction when it looks like it's tip-stalling? |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
Yes I believe it does always tip stall in the same direction. I run all these things by him. thanks for the response.
|
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
Ok, just let us know what happens and if you have more details it would be great.
|
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
Air speed air speed air speed....
This plane must be balanced properly !!! I'm running an electric setup, my Thunder Power battery weighs 26 oz (1.62500 Lbs) my AXI 4130/16 weighs 14.2 oz (.90 Lbs) !!! I still had to add 6 oz of lead to the nose to get it to balance properly.... This all adds up to a total weight of 2.8875 pounds of weight on the nose or at the forward end of the aircraft.... If you don't take the time to balance this plane and get the CG right, expect to distroy this beautiful aircraft.... This may look, smell and have the shape of a trainer, but let it be known, this is a scale plane and a very heavy one that must be flown accordingly... Mine probably weighs in at or over 9 Lbs...I'll try to get an exact weight later... Good Luck ! Sam |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
Thank you Next time I see him I will tell him some things to check for.
|
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
On the larger version we went through exactly the same thing with a club member's plane.
The plane would react in a very tail heavy manner. Almost all mid throttle turns resulted in a tip stall. At high throttles the nose went up in an almost uncontrollable manner. The bottom line is that the plane was too tail heavy. The plane was stalling out on us but we did not know this, as the nose would not come down during the stall. A turn in this condition caused one wing to drop quickly. Either the builder did not correctly balance the plane, or he did not understand where the C.G. should be. I eyeballed the plane and told him to place the C.G. between the forward two wing cap screws. This was much further forward than what the directions called for, but it cured the flight problems. |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
They gave us a range on the .52 size one...
Between 65 mm and 70mm <------------- I wasn't impressed, but oh well I still love the plane !!! I went with 65 mm to be safe, better to have it a little nose heavy then tail heavy, I've never seen a plane written off on a maiden from being too nose heavy, but I sure seen a lot written off from being tail heavy on a maiden... It's kind of like meeting a new women...she looks great, she lots of fun to be with.... but it's only until later you find out she has a few minor issues like snoring, and being totally out of balance when she drinks too much LOL ! Some things we just need to live with if we want to keep them around ! :D Sam |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
I just talked to Nitro Models and they said it'll be 8 weeks before they get any more of these planes in from China...
Bummer I want 2 more !!! :) Sam |
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
If you don't mind me asking... why do you need 3 of the same?
|
RE: New CMP Cessna 182 .52 size
Wow, 8 more weeks. I lucked out on my eBay find.
Good question Tracon, why 3 of the same? Of course this is me asking that has 4 Ultra Sport Kits in the top of a closet NIB. (1 US1000, 2 US60, 1 US40) |
