Congrats on completeing. I am going to be working on mine this weekend HOPEFULLY. I am surprised they only used wood screws for the landing gear. Looks like I am running to the LHS to get some blind nuts. It will be a few days before I even have a chance to fly mine. The weather is horrible here. Hope you find better luck but since you are to the east of me I you are getting our crappy weather too I am sure.

Mine is next up too. I just took the saito 100 out of the P-51 to find a bent crank! So I am trying to find a guy to straighten it if possible. Time to fly.....more later.

HOT and Humid here. Not the type of day to test fly.

Still have the marking to install, might spend the afternoon in the cool basement.

Enjoy the run to the LHS.

forget trying to straighten the crank. More trouble and expense that getting a new one, been there and the new was cheaper.

Flyboy Dave is offering to do it for free. I am sending it to him tomorrow. Heck trying can't hurt.

Good luck man. Hope it works. Free is always better. IMHO ;)

Well I am almost done. All I have to do it put the rudder and stabilizer on. Man this working thing is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy overrated. It interferes with building and flying too much :)

Agree on the working, but it does pay the bills and allow us to enjoy this hobby.

Hope the work on the crank comes out ok. A little off and it will shake the plane to pieces.

Hope to fly mine later today, after all the honey will you help me.

RE: BH T-28 Assembly

Jim & All,

First off, very good review and very deserving for this superb BH T28. I received mine on 5/15 and could not believe the quality for the price! It is the first build of an ARF that I have not modified and changed out some hardware. I used each item to end up with the two spare wing hold down bolts! Like you mention, I used my drill only for the motor mounts. Hard to believe again that even the gear blocks are predilled for the straps. To date I have three flights with the usual throw and trim adjustments. We have discovered that the angle of attack with using the wheels, all three being the same, is something that needs to be addressed. You mention that you have increased the mains to a 3". I have gone a different route and replaced the nose wheel with a 1- 3/4" to align the wing. Tomorrow will be the test of this and hopefully it will stop flying on touchdown. Will let you know!

Thanks John for the kind words and help on the wheels. Weather here in NJ has not been kind to test fly. Hopefully this weekend the winds will diminish and I can get her out.

Jim,

Don't feel bad about the weather, Arizona is the same and 109F by 11AM! We go out at 6:00 til about 10:00 but the winds have been predominatly from the south which is a direct crosswind to our east-west runway which is asphault and 60' x 600' so we can still cross control and get her in. Hopefully tomorrow will get us some results on my change.

RE: BH T-28 Assembly

Sounds like everyone is having the same problems as I am here in the Cincinnati area. Even if I could get out to fly I couldn't because the wind has just been way too much. I will fly in 20 mph winds without hesitation but the wind here lately is unbelieveable.

RE: BH T-28 Assembly

HAPPY 4TH. The winds and the weather are suppose to be favorable this weekend. Let's Hope.

RE: BH T-28 Assembly

I'm fairly new to building and have a couple newbie questions.

I am putting together the BH Models T28 and have a Saito 91 that I want to use.

First: Does the engine mount template work since it is set up for a OS 61??

Second: There is a box built up inside where the fuel tank goes, so the fuel tank opening doesn't go all the way to the firewall. Is it supposed to sit back from the firewall like that?

Third: What size prop do you recommend for the Saito 91 on this plane? The only one I have that is close is a 13X6 right now and probably need to buy some different ones.

Your help and advice is appreciated.

Hello Kymont

Here are the specs for the Saito 91:
Specs

Type:4-stroke
Displacement:.91 cu in (15.0 cc)
Bore:1.11 in (28.20 mm)
Stroke:0.94 in (24.00 mm)
Cylinders:Single - Chrome Plated
Engine (Only) Weight:19.6 oz
Crankshaft Threads:M7 x 1mm
Benchmark Prop:14 x 6 Zinger @ 9,100
Prop Range:12x8 - 15x6
RPM Range:2,000 - 11,000
Fuel:10% - 30% Synthetic
Mounting Dimensions:116 x 60 x 117 mm
Muffler Type:Cast
Cylinder Type:AAC
Carb Type:Barrel, 2 Needle Valve
Crank Type:Ball Bearing

If the motor isn't broken in yet I would use the 14 X 6 then adjust accordingly. As far as the fuel tank placement. I don't think that it sticks out like most tanks do. I haven't gotten that far just yet. I will find out this weekend though. JimO will be on here soon I am sure and will be able to answer that question.

Hope you enjoy the plane and ask all the questions you want that is what we are here for.

Thanks for the quick reply on this. I'll look for more info on the fuel tank when you or others get a chance to look.

The Saito 91S was purchased from another member in the RCU marketplace. He said he ran it for about five flights so I'm assuming it's broken in. Looks like it's in great shape.

I've got my wing together and am getting ready to start on the fuse work and tail. Can't wait to see it all together.

RE: BH T-28 Assembly

Are you asking if the fuel tank is supposed to stick out through the hole in the firewall? I don't think so. Not 100% but don't think so. I have only had 2 planes that did that. One was a trainer 40 and the other was a little extra. I bet it sits back in there a bit. I run some of my tanks in the radio compartment. Depending on cg of course.

RE: BH T-28 Assembly

Was away for the day. NO the fuel tank does not go all the way to the front. Look in towards the firewall and you will see a mount with a hole in the middle. The neck of the tank fits in this hole.

The Saito will fit on the mount as marked. To be sure, I would clamp the engine in the mounts and line up the holes as indicated on the template. My 80 Saito fit fine and the 91 is the same in case size give or take a small amount.

I use a 13/7 on my 91 which is on my air Tractor, so a 14/6 will be fine.

It is a great looking plane when finished.

Jim,

Just an update!

The change out to a 1 3/4" nose wheel is the answer. Almost lifted off without any backpressure and landing on the mains with throttle cut, nose drops down to roll out.

John, Thanks for the update. Changing the mains worked for me, we fly off of grass and it is a bit rough in places as we just relocated some of the runway. Trying to keep the nose as big as possible. I prefer to fly tail draggers and don't have any problems with them.

Last two projects: Air Tractor 502, Beaver

I am just about finished with my plane. thank goodness. Work and the loss of my Mother has kept me out of the shop. My question is what size wheels do you have on the back landing gear? I guess I don't understand why you guys have changed the front. Is it to help lift off?

JimO 07-11-2008 11:53 AM

RE: BH T-28 Assembly

The plane with the stock wheels sits nose high. It helps for lift off, but also keeps it wanting to fly on landing. Angle of attack of the leading edge of wing is raised. Making it level helps to keep the nose down.

Ahhhh Ok... That makes absolute sense. So do you think 3 inch Dubro Low Bounce wheels on the back and a 2 3/4 inch on the front will be good? I just happen to have them in stock here in the work shop for another kit that I am building. What size wheels do you have yours?

JimO 07-12-2008 10:32 AM

RE: BH T-28 Assembly

I have the stock on the nose and 3 inch on the mains. The best I can offer is place on the axles and see how it sits before you install the collars. Flying mine tomorrow weather permitting. Family picnic today and the other, better half, said "NO FLYING".

So what is you next project?
