I'm thinking of getting a Dago Red (EZ MRC) as my next plane, I want something with retracts and speed. However, I'm not sure what they fly like... I've got a 4*40 and a .40 ultra stick that I have no problems flying. Nothing fancy just loops, rolls, and the occasional hammer-head. My question is... Is this too much of a step for my next plane, obviously I don't want to throw good money out the window... I'm thinking of the Great Planes .40 P-51 kit as well (I'm told the ARF is a completely different plane).
Thanks in advance, Mike

My Feedback: (10)
FWIW, I bought the Voodoo and the kit is siting in it's box till I get good with my 4*. I am looking forward to the day I can take this plane out and start building it because my skills allow me to.
If you really look at the Dago kit it's nothing more than a 4* in basic body style. Low wing, tail drager, scale size elevator and rudder surface. Not a 3D plane of any kind, as a matter of fact it might fly a bit long in the tooth compared to your others. The biggest thing is it should be a faster plane considering the gear is retractable and you will decrease drag there.
The big difference is that you will be able to run flaps/flaperons on the Dago. The other thing is retracts. I think you are probably more than ready to get a DagoRed. If you enable flaps, that thing will land as slow as any trainer.
I say get it and enjoy! It's a great looking kit!

Not familiar with the model BUT consider these things.
whats the wing loading compared to your existing planes?
whats the dihedral compared to your existing planes?
whats the % tail surface compared to the wing compared to your existing planes?
whats the wing thickness compared to your existing planes?
ALL these things can afect how a plane handles drasticaly.
what Furyicon says ("If you really look at the Dago kit it's nothing more than a 4* in basic body style. Low wing, tail drager, scale size elevator and rudder surface.") is WAAAAAAAAY over simplifying the comparison, its almost like saying a piper (2 engines, low wing, retracts) is like WW2 Mosquito ( 2 engines, low wing, retracts), what a plane LOOKS like is like compareing apples and pears.

Thanks for the replies guys, no offence to furyicon, but I realize the comparison was oversimplified and that the wing characteristics would be a major factor. That's why I was hoping someone who had flown the Dago Red (or Voodoo) would respond.
Thanks, Mike

Mike,
Don't know if you are still watching this thread, but here goes. I have been flying my EZ Dago red for 1year now and love it. This thing can be extremely fast and have a wicked roll rate. Mine has a Saito .80 in it. Having said that. If you set up low rates and use the throttle this plane does not have any bad habits and can be flown nice and easy. The only thing you need to watch out for is slowing down to much on your approaches. this plane has a thin airfoil and very little drag, read hard to slow down. So you try hard to bring it in slow, but if you get to slow the stall occurs rather abrupt. You will love this plane! I have been flying for 16 years and this is my favorite plane of all time. Simply because it flies so well. This ARF kit has a few quirks in the instructions. Use common sense and do things the way you think they should be done. For example, don't mount the aileron servos with double sided tape, I promise you that is a bad idea :-). But the way the plane flys makes it worth the money and the few problems with the instructions. I haven't had any trouble with the retracts, although others don't like them. They are cheap, but I have been flying with them off a rough grass field for a year with know problems. The only modification I made was using bigger wheels because of the grass runway. Good Luck!
