$2.29 special

I can not believe that a prop nut for a OS-46 cost 2.29. I'm in the wrong business. (ha, I'm retired). Why is everything related to our hobby so expensive? I can go to Home Depot and get a 1 1/2 lbs for the same price. There I feel better I got that off of my chest. [8D]

And you didn't get one at home depot, why???
It's a simple case of marketing. You can go to a place like Micro Fasteners and buy 100 servo screws for about 6 bucks or buy a package of 8 at the LHS for about 2 bucks.
Just like you can buy a can of beans at the grocery store for under a dollar but the local convenience store sells the same can for $1.98

Hey Irish.
Those were OS nuts. Now, if you bought a bag full of regular nuts, well, that would be different. Those were certified to be OS nuts. Hmmm.. somehow that sounds... ok.. ok.
You got a pretty good deal. If those were Air Force B-52 nuts, they would be about $400 each.
Yeah yeah.. I've heard it all before.. The Coast Guard doesn't have.. shut up,CGr...
Here we go.. starting a "nuts" war.

The local Fastenal store has had everything I've ever looked for.....if they don't have it they can make it on site within a few hours. The only draw back is they sell by the bag. I needed three small screws for my rudder control horn.....had to buy three, three ponds! But those $4 should last me pretty much forever! (there has to be a bright side right?)

Duhhh! You have been in this hobby for over 4 years and just finally figured out it is expensive??? Duh!!!!
You are in the wrong hobby if you complain about prices from O.S or any other Manufacturer. Try Golf!!!

That nut only cost you a few cents. The rest was to pay for the packaging, the individual shipping costs, the cost of the time it spent in inventory etc. You got a bargain and did not know it.

Yeah, you would have gotten a quantity discount of 5%!!!!
Now that's a true savings!!!
I don't know how many times I went to the LHS and bought stuff like that, Irish, and well, you know, you need one, you get six in that little bag for $2.29. I used one and have five sitting somewhere that I can't remember where. Then the next time I need the same thing, I look all over the place for the 5 that I put away, can't find them, so off I go to the LHS and buy 6 more for $2.39 this time cuz the price went up. I get home, open the package, use one, and put the other five away.. and, of course, the cycle continues.

I was in a thread some time back right here on RCU talking about buying prop nuts at Lowes or Home Depot or where ever and somebody really scoffed and bad mouthed the folks who did so because these nuts were not properly hardened for the job. BS. If I lose the factory supplied prop nut, I'm gonna go to Lowes and buy a grade five nut for about 7 cents and use it. If something strips, I damn sure want it to be the nut, not the crankshaft. The point here is that some of us really believe that it can only work if it comes from a hobby supply place, and that's just nonsense. Titebond will work just as well as Sig Bond. Two part epoxy from any hardware store will work just as well as epoxy from Great Planes. Socket head screws from Home Depot work just as well as from any online store. The LAST place you want to buy supplies is from a hobby supply if you can get it anywhere else. I realize I am opening myself up to flaming for not supporting my LHS or online store, but when you are on the budget I am on, flaming does not hurt as much as paying $1.49 for four socket head screws when you can get a bag full of them from RTL for the same price.

Maybe if we all started to be more frugal withour purchases the manufacturers would get the idea that they too can be replaced with less expensive items. But then I suppose they will retaliate by disallowing warranty claims because factory such and such parts were not used. Oh well I guess the merry-go-round continues to goround and round and.....

They aren't getting rich on $2 nuts, even if they did only pay 2 cents for them. Truth be told, they price them that way because they don't want to deal with them, but we annoying hobbyists keep on insisting on buying brand labeled stuff!

You are all worried about $2 propnuts; I'm still trying to figure out why you only get a penny for your thoughts but always have to put your 2 cents in.
And who's getting the extra penny?

Wait till you see the prices of hobby stuff elsewhere.
I currently work in the US as a Brit on an exchange program and will return to England next year.
I've just bought a GP Revolver 70 here in the US from Tower for $180, with member discounts. Just checked the price in the UK......£230, so thats about $370. Thats just one example, but its similar for everything else.
Any you think yur government screws you for tax!
