Default Heli fuel for plane

Just a question that suddenly pops up. Have anyone ever use heli fuel (for 2-stroke engine) to power a nitro plane engine? Can that works and will it cause any damages to the engine?

Thanks

Yes...I have.

It doesn't really matter if it's heli, airplane, or even car fuel. What matters is the oil content, the nitro content, the oil type, and the quality.

For "most" 2 strokes (O.S., TT, Magnums) you want around 18% oil. I would never use less than 18% and am glad to use 20% for the extra protection.

As far as nitro content goes, anything from 5% to 15% is fine without making any physical changes to the engine.

The difference between heli fuel is that it's usually all synthetic oil, as opposed to a castory/synthetic blend. That means, no castor. If you end up running it a little lean, or storing the engine without after-run oil, the synthetic won't protect like the castor oil. I don't know how true that really is, but from my own experience, I'll ALWAYS use castor.

The disadvantage is that the castor oil makes a mess..

The fuel I use is a 80/20 blend of synthetic/castor... That is what I recommend.

For what it's worth, Cool Power's 15% Heli is the same as their normal 15% blend. There's just a different sticker on the bottle, and because it says heli shops can get away with selling it for a bit more. That's a unique case, though. Their 30% glow fuels are somewhat different blends as I understand it.

Brian's right, so long as there's enough oil there's no problem. It's largely marketing.
