Default Camera harness...

Any body know of a camera webbing or mounting device that I can use to mount a video camera on my hat to enable filming of my planes?

most cameras are threaded (1/4-20) on the bottomside so they can be bolted to a tripod
just get a 1/4-20 bolt, drill a small hole in your (hard)hat and bolt your camera to it, you will have to play with the angles to get the camera and your eyes looking at the same thing but it shouldnt be difficullt

hope this helps

The only problem with this idea is that without being able to zoom in and follow the plane, you'll end up with a nice video of the sky with an occasional black dot flying around.

Here I thought it was to mount the camera on a plane.   The zoom wouldnt be a problem, most cameras have remotes for that, making sure it zooms where you want it to is the trick.   Since my iphone has a camera in it, I was thinking it could be velcrod to my hat.

And which control do you want to let go of to operate the zoom?

The zoom shouldn't be a problem. When my flying buddy was doing some filming he was losing the plane all the time due to zooming in too close. The zoom is quite powerful with 130 X when set at max. To try and correct this, we set the camera at about the 3/4 zoom and we left it there. The camera has auto focus so the end result was quite good (imho).

The next problem is, you need to keep your head facing the plane. You'd be surprised at how often you head is pointing one way while your eyes are looking another.

And while you're concentrating on keeping your head facing the plane, don't forget to fly it

We had someone try this at our club field....

The results were not good, and they found that they could obtain better results having their seven year old film the plane in flight...

As Minnflyer pointed out, unless you have your eyes on the camera frame, you do not know if your plane is visible to the camera....

There are a couple of regulars on Youtube that use a hat cam with good results. If you want to fly by yourself, a hat cam may be your only option. In my experience with friends and family camera users, even when the plane is not very far away, it is hard for them to keep the plane on the camera screen. My two cents.
