Default Sig Cabinaire .........Help

Hey Gang, I finished trimming my PP Nesmith Cougar and I will take some pics tomorrow, and hope to post them soon. Well, My PC took a lightning bolt through the modem last week and now I am finally back online. Anyway......yada yada...I am building the Sig Cabinaire FF model. It has a 24" span. I want to make this one my first RC homebuilt. Can anyone help me from the start?...Please no suggestions on arfs...... Thanks, I bought a Firebird Outlaw to have fun with in the meantime. Any help on when and what should I put in this plane to make it an easy flyer with rudder and speed control...would be a big help. Thanks

I'm sorry....heres the link, its under airplanes...Build It Yourself Free Flight

From the start? Get a smooth ceiling tile from home depot as a building board that you can pin to. Lay it out on a really flat level surface, then the plans and then some wax paper on top of them.

Get some t-pins from the hobby store and thin and medium CA and a pack of #11 Exacto blades and your ready to start.

JanetC

Chose your power source based on the models all up flying weight.

If the plane is light enough GWS IPS motors are an inexpensive solution

For this project you may want to go to the parkflyers forum on Ezonemag.com I've found that when it comes to electrics thats the place to get the best advice

Nope Janet, BasinBum is not kidding, ceiling tile are great for building on. Put your ceiling tile on top of an old solid wood door.....works perfect!!!!!

I'm not kidding. Is that the type of info you were requesting or is that to basic. You did say from the start and that is a good start.

Janet,
I've built a Cabinaire, and it was a good flyer on rubber. It may be a bit to small for a full radio set up, but as you said a rudder/speed control should fly it o.k. Ask the experts on e-zone for motor/controller advice, maybe a magnetic actuator for the rudder. GWS motor will be to big, maybe a KP-2?
You could build it,mpower it with a small motor (elec.) for free flight, then use the plans, and (kinko's) will scale it up to about 36-40" for a regular "micro radio"/280 sized motor set up.

Just a thought.

Janet,
BasinBum was being sincere. Others don't have the knowledge of your prior building experience.

The Ezone advice is good. What will the weight of the airframe be, any idea?

If it's in the 12 to 18 ounce range; a geared speed 400 should be sufficient power. A 20 Amp ESC and 7 or 8 cell, 600 AE NiCD battery pack would work fine. Might want to go with Lithium cells for much lighter weight, but higher cost.

DB, the plane is to small for that type of radio stuff.
Speed 280 at most, more like 150 with no gearbox. Magnetic actuator for rudder, and a SMALL speed control. It's a 29" span, maybe 4 oz w/rubber semi-scale, maybe 50 square inches of wing. To small for a typical 2-hs 55's and speed 400 w/gearbox set-up. More like an indoor model.
E-Zone guys will help.
I'm sure you can make this R/C janet, but it will be an indoor, or no wind condition flyer.

Hey Janet don't let the guys joke with you too much.....prove to them that you CAN do it!!!! I like BasinBum didn't know your level of building skills and when I was ready to build my first plane welcomes the door/ceiling tile info. Obviously you were past that....so sorry if we offended you. Happy building!!!!

Thanks Jetts, I didn't realize it was that small.

Todd's Models is a decent place to find micro stuff. Unfortunately he's on vacation, so his site is "closed" until Saturday.

Here's link though. http://www.toddsmodels.com/

Good luck Janet.

I have no idea if the stuff is any good, but I just saw an ad in a magazine from Cirrus with some new seriously micro servos, RX, and ESC. Neat looking stuff that might fit well with what you're doing, and the prices aren't out of line.

I've had some experience with Cirrus equipment and it's good stuff.

Janet,
There's another micro RC supplier called Skyhooks and Rigging that might be a better lead than Todd's.
http://www.microrc.com/

I know they carry incredibly tiny stuff, like the magnetic actuators mentioned earlier.

Hi JanetC!

Looks like I'm a few years late, but did this project go anywhere? I find myself in a strikingly similar position. I've got a SIG Cabinaire kit in hand, and it would be great to give it an R/C setup :-)

Roger
