Default i have an OS .40 la.

Hi guys. I have a poor little OS .40 la in my tool box that needs a home. Any good suggestions on a plane? Nothing too big, just something I can tool around the field with. Thanks for any suggestions.

It would be good for a trainer, a World Models 40 Ultimate, a .32 aerobatic plane.

I would be looking for small .32 planes for that motor.

Fun fly planes like the Up-Roar, Dazzler, Fun 51. Even the little Kaos ARF. Although not a ball of fire the LA always runs. I used the .46 LAs for fun fly events for a long time. I always felt the .40 was so under powered compared to there .46 it should have been discontinued, it finally was.[8D]

The Tower Hobbies Fun-51 would be a good choice.  I have a NIB .40 LA I have to find a home for as well.

G'day

What about the Sig LT-25. It is larger than most 40 size trainers, builds to be very light and flies well. I used to fly mine with an OS FS40. It was just slightly underpowered. The LT40 would be fine.

The downside (if it is really a downside) is that it is only available as a kit. Easy to build though.

I flew mine for a while with a Leo 46 running FAI fuel (no nitro) and it was just perfect. It was overpowered but the Leo would run happily at part throttle. Your LT would love it.

Nothing wrong with it at all, the OP just never mentioned trainer, or any type of plane so we are just tossing planes out there,

Yeah, just tossing planes around. I think I'm looking for a trainer type. Just something to tool around the field.

Global's RCM 40 Trainer (ARF).  I'm sure you'll get a dozen good trainer recommendations.  I like this one.  Less speed sensitive for climb than some and it will fly inverted.  It's an old & trusted design.  Makes a great ski plane, too.

Ifly my Falcon 56 with a 40LA and it flies great. The guys at the field call it "The Hotrod" because it flies pretty quick!

All the suggestions so far are good. The 40 LA is a good little engine but it is a little wimpie on power output so tucking it into a 30 size plane or a small lightweight 40 size is the right idea. A couple of years ago I shoehorned a 40LA into a 30 size Thunder Tiger "Lazy Tiger 51" (a totally non scale sorta P-51). It made a great performing low wing hot rod, that was fun and EZ to fly. Earlier tonight on "flea-bay" I saw a Thunder Tiger "Lazy Cub" ARF with an asking starting bid of $49. The "Lazy Cub" is a not at all scale, high wing trainer like fun fly type with about a 54" wingspan. It should be EZ to fly with none of the quirks that a scale Cub would have. It's not really a cub so if you are a low time newbie it might be a fun tail dragger trainer. HAY, it's Cub yellow, what more do you want ??? Check it out.

I've heard several people describe the 40LA as "one of the best .25s around" so anything made for a .25 should work. There are not a lot of current ARFs in that size but some kits are available.

I sure wish those Thunder Tiger planes would come back. That sorta P-51 was an outstanding plane and a perfect second plane.
CARR is correct, the LA .40 is about perfect for any of the .25 to .30 planes. I had a pile of the .40s at one time. Every trainer someone gave me had an LA .40 on it. I guess if it is a .40 size plane then a cheap .40 engine should be the engine of choice. That seemed to be the thinking anyway.
The .40 works on most any .40 trainer but there is zero OS factor in one. I pulled them and used the LA .46, a much stronger engine. The .40 is also the only LA I have ever seen completely worn out. But it would still run!!!
Back to planes again, any trainer the OP can get his hands on and I do really like the RCM trainer and the old Goldberg trainer. A CUB is a good choice too if the OP can handle one?

I have my 40LA in a Goldberg Eagle II. It is a good combination - more than adequate power. I also agree with the previous suggestions.... Fun 51, Mid Star, Four Star, Kavalier, etc. It may not be the strongest 40, but it is reliable, very light weight, and will last for many years. By the way, the Fun51 is a nice model - really enjoyed mine.

Best home I found for an LA40 was a Phoenix Models Robin. Low wing and twitchy as heck, but lots of fun to fly!!! Not quite what the OP is looking for I know!

Had 2 or maybe it was three of these, unfortunately they don't make them any more or I'd buy another (I too have an LA40 lying around)

Sig 1/6 scale Piper J-3 Cub - Clipped Wing or Standard Wing Cub.
Sig Kobra (Small version of the Kougar/King Kobra)

There's a thread and plans available in the classic pattern forum for the Bridi Tweedy Bird for which the LA .40 would be perfect.

RCM has plans for the RCM/Bridi Trainer 40 which was designed around engines like this.

In the other forum (RCG), in the oldtimer section, there's a thread going with lots (hundreds of them!) of older plans posted. Many of these will be great for the LA .40.

Great! I'll check them out. Kind of eyeing up the lazy tiger though. It looks cool, and like something I can put around.
