Default Found A Great Plane At A Thrift Store..Need Engine Recommendation Please!

Hi, folks!

New guy here!

Let me preface by saying it's been a LOOOONGGG time since I had my last RC plane but I used to fly quite a bit and did real well. That being said, it's been 30+ years since I touched a stick and I know a lot has changed since then.
I was thrifting over the weekend and stumbled on an NOS and complete with all accessories, an old Jayhawk Flitecraft Cardinal ARF. It was from 1987 and had all receipts in the box from Tower Hobbies! I was fixing to put this together and mess with it. Granted, it is not the best ARF but hey, for the price I could not pass it up. It is a top wing plane with a span of about 60". It has ailerons, rudder and flaps as well as a steerable front wheel (tripod setup). It is a PVC fuse with foamy and coated parts. Pretty decent build (for what it is) and looks to be stable to fly. I was thinking of powering this with a SuperTigre GS-45 and maybe a 10-6 prop. I am going to scour the net for a good 4-channel Futaba radio (2.4Ghz) and some servos. This plane is set up for any config. I can think of so I am thinking 4 servos for the ailerons, flaps, rudder & front wheel and throttle.
I am thinking ahead if I want to get another plane down the road so I was looking at the SuperTigre because of the build (ABC w/crank ball bearings), adaptability and it's "spirit".

Thanx in advance for your advice!

Bud

If that's the right size engine, I'll suggest getting a Thunder Tiger .46 Pro instead of the Super Tigre. ST's are good powerful engines, but the tuning is a little more temperamental than the TT engines are. Also, skip the 4 channel basic radio. Spend a few more dollars on a 6 channel computerized radio. The programming features on the computer radio will make life better immediately, and the ability to save setups for multiple planes will save you your money back later when you add more planes to your fleet.

heres a find of the week!

I found this tonight at Goodwill but it might be too big for my plane. More suited for a .6 class, but?

You found a Saito 1.00 at Goodwill? I need to start shopping where you shop. And you're right, that engine would nicely overpower a .60 size sport or aerobatic plane. It would be way too much on a .40 size plane.

I guess I am having a lucky run this week!
I am usually on the lookout for vintage audio gear..that is what I do, yet, when I found the ARF Cardinal it once again sparked my interest in RC planes that I had given up on in around 1978 or 9 and moved on. And now to find an engine? !! I need to buy a lotto ticket (and stay indoors during a lightning storm! )
It's not new but obviously has very low hours. The compression is tight and the muff is still shiny silver!
I guess it could be fun on a .40 trainer swinging a 14" prop....until I nose it down a bit on takeoff and shave an inch off of the tips! Low sped & landing would be a challenge too.
To keep the CG where it needs to be then a 3-4 lb. plane ends up a 6lb'er with not enough wing surface. Dammit!
Guess I could get a bigger top-wing ARF
Not wanting to jump in with both feet this time so I am going to keep it simple. One plane, a decent affordable controller and a NEW quality 2-stroker. I know how addictive this hobby is and now that I am older I am much more disciplined...and more broke!

Not only would it come out too heavy, it would have a lot of torque a P factor to deal with too. I just can't believe someone gave a $300 RC engine to a thrift shop.
