Deep Thought...

Dennis, Wings,
Yes I agree, this is a good place for info MOST OF THE TIME.
I was self taught, mostly because I got interested, and couldn't find any info, or help.
However- having said that, I'd also like to ad that there at times, can be a great amount of misinfo here. Example: one guy telling another that "I can't believe I'm going to do this, but heres some good advice, get rid of that .46 evo engine and buy a 70-90 fourstroke"- for a SIG KADET SENIOR!!!!!!! Can you say OH COME ON ALREADY!!!!!????
Or you see a lot of "Well I never had one of those, but I'd guess".......
I'll get a lot of flack for these comments, but PLEASE FOLKS- if you don't really know, or have never had/used a product, DON'T REPLY JUST TO ADD TO YOU TOTAL POSTS, you're doing people a great dis-service.
Alrighty then, I'll put away my soap box now......

wings,
THIS is why Al Gore invented the internet <sorry moderator, I couldn't resist that, I don't mean anything political by it>
SERIOUSLY--> This "exchange of information" IS why the internet was created. You may be surprised to know that it has been around for over 20 years. It is just "easier" to use and available to more people "these days". I began using the internet over 15 years ago--before Bill Gates created "Windoze" (as we called it back then). It was great. Even then, there was an enourmous amount of information available. Especially, in the educational realm. When the "information highway" came along, we called new people (that used it as a play ground and to spread misinformation) "speed bumps". When the World Wide Web came along, I forsaw the "Information Highway" being reduced to a gravel road! Now, it has become more like the "Las Vegas Strip". In some ways it is very cool! I really appreciate RCU! But in other ways, one must sift through so much BS to find any real information, it can be frustrating. In some ways it is really good, but in other ways, it is pretty sad. Now, rather than turning to a book for reference, I turn to a brower and search engine :-(. It is quicker, but I don't think it is really better!
Thanks for letting me use your soap box Jettstarblue :-)

The main problem I find with RCU is that there is so much interesting stuff that a lot of good building time is used following both the information and misinformation. I have lots of private chuckles about some weird opinions and I'm thankful for the good stuff. I suppose I'm just an RCU junkie. I'm also into the AMYA website, my WWII bomb group website, shopping sites for most of the major distributors and answering my email. I wonder why my sight is getting blurry.

Ten years older then what?
If I were born 10 years earlier, I'd be 10 years experience and be a better pilot.
And if Al Gore invented the internet, wouldn't it be for his campaign rather then information sharing?

I know Al Gore didn't invent the internet (I was using it way before he became VP) I just thought someone else may have heard that statement, and found it as amusing as I did. Sorry! :-). Besides, I was among those who would have liked to have been born 10 years later. Then my hair woudn't be so gray!

Guess it depend on how you look at it. I meant what if we were born 10 years earlier and were the same age. Ya ya, I know, it doesn't really make since [sm=confused.gif].

Ok, side note from a long time internet user. (signed on in '88, I'm sure there are guys on here who were on before me.)
Back in the good 'ole days, there was NSFnet, the government controlled major backbone of the internet, with it's non-commericalization policies and all that. As the internet grew, the backbones started to slow down, and there was a general lack of bandwidth. So the government decided they needed a high speed, limited access backbone for distributed super computer research. It was to connect a few specific sites (Los Alamos, the National SuperComptuer somethingortheother and a few others).
Note that limited access roads (what we now call interstates) were often referred to as "super highways". So this particular super-highspeed backbone with it's limited access, and not the internet as a whole, was the "information superhighway".
But (as usual) the politicos and general population didn't understand the difference between the "internet" and this limited-use backbone, and the "info superhighway" quickly got confused with the internet, and people started incorrectly calling the internet the "superhighway". Gore got caught up in all this stuff and in the confusion, leading to the quote where he says he invented the internet. That administration did fund (and build?) the "info super highway". But they obviously didn't build the internet.
Fwiw, I have no idea what ever happened to the real "info superroad". In the years just before and for a bit after the proposal, the internet boom got well underway, and lots of various companies started building bandwidth like crazy rather than waiting for the government to fund it. I remember one of the big questions about the governments plan was weither the whole thing would be obsolete before it came on line.

Wingnut,
The internet was "invented" by a bunch of really smart guys at Bell Labs. They wanted to communicate (email) with their buddies who where still in school, but the US mail was too slow. Then some professor/scientist thought it would be really cool for sharing information very quickly, between a lot of people. Then the government got interested, and very much like the InterState Highway system, it took off from there!
Good job of explaining Montaque! I think the reason Gore stumbled in the TV interview was because in the middle of the statement, he realized he didn't really want to tell the TV audience, and the Americans that were paying for it) that they weren't going to get to use "his internet".[:-] He was really a lot smarter than he got credit for :-) Even if he couldn't spell very well
Whatever wings meant, I am just glad I wasn't born 10 years ago!
