I need some advise. Today I ordered the 4*40 kit from my local hobby shop and I told the salesman I wasn't sure on the engine to put in it and he said the evolution .46 would be a nice engine. I told him I would do some research and let him know, so what do you all think about this engine for the 4 star, how does it compare to the OS .46 FX or AX performance wise. Thanks for any info and I am open to any suggestions on types of engines to use.

I am kinda wondering the exact same thing. I crashed my trainer last fall and just completed my 4 * 40 kit. I installed the evo .46 NT that I had on my trainer. The plans only recommend up to .40. I think the evo .46 is the strongest .46 size 2 stroke engine there is. At least that is what it said in the AMA magazine. If I were buying an engine and didn't have this one already I would probably by a smaller one.
I am eager to hear the responses you get. I can tell you I taxied it in in the drive and I gave it full throttle for like one second and the tail was already in the air.

A 46 FX is the perfect engine for this plane. It pulls the plane like nothing. It can fly anywhere from fast to a crawl. Any 46 will probably work, and if you want a cheaper option than the 46 FX then try a TT Pro 46. It has great power to money ratio.

A bushed .40-.42 will fly this plane quite well if built light. For more performance and more vertical a BB .40-.53 will do wonders. If you want to go four stroke, a .52-.54 will do it if it is light and a .70 will fly it nicely! Brands these days don't amount to squat...just about any modern engine will perform just fine once it is set-up/properly tuned.

Any decent BB 45 would do. I hear that the Evo engines work real well. I do not have one. A TT 46 Pro would do it nice. good engine at a good price. Before I spent the bucks on an OS I would buy an Irvine. I have 2 53's and like them. I would reccomend them highly. I would look at my pocketbook. If it is kinda lean then I would buy the TT or the Evo engine. If I had the money I would go Irvine. This is my opinions. I wish you well on your kit.

From: gone,
The 4*40 can hover on a .40 2-stroke. a .72 4-stroke is recommended for the 4* 60. (the O.S. .72 4-stroke has as much power as the O.S. .61 FX)
On my 4*40, I used a Magnum XL .40 with a APC 12.25 X 3.75. The Magnum has about 85% to 90% of the power of a O.S. .40 FX, or about the same as a O.S. LA .40... that is enough for unlimited consecutive inside-outside vertical 8's. (See AMA Pattern maneuvers) Only reason I fell out was a dumb thumb, not a lack of power. With that prop it will accelerate going straight up and is capable of any maneuver in the AMA intermediate Pattern. (and most fun-fly maneuvers) Anything the airframe was designed for... thats all the power you need.
I litterally wore out my 4*40. Went to do a recover job after 15 months of flying it and found I'd overstressed the plane beyond reasonable repair. (and some fuel soaking from bad seams on cheap covering...)
By the way... you want the low pitch prop for landings. With a 10X6 it wouldn't slow down enought to stick to the ground with the engine at idle. An 11X4 (cheaper and easier to find than the 12.25X3.75) and it slows down fine (and has almost as good vertical performance). The 4*40 is not meant to fly 120 mph... so the low pitch is a VERY good thing.

Thankyou all for the feedback, this forum is awesome because there are so many people willing to help one another. I am getting ready to go pick up my kit so I can get started on it hopefully tonight. My local hobby shop has a evo .46 in stock so I think I will give it a shot to see how I like it. Be ready for more questions when it comes build time. Thanks again!

I am assuming that since this in the beginners forum that you don't care about hovering, and all that 3d BS yet, so if you putting the four star together, you will not be dissappointed even slightly on the OS 46FX. IMO, this is the best 40-sized engine made.
I have purchased several. Most have been sold to others on planes (I put together a lot of planes for others) but my original work horse is still running. It started out on a 4-star, then after 40 or so flights, I put it on a GP Venus (awesome plane), I tore the wing up on the venus on a power dive. The engine was not harmed in the resulting crash. Cleaned it up and then put a tuned pipe on it and ran 25% nitro on a GP Patriot. Took it off the patriot in favor of a sport JETT, and installed it on my Slow Poke 40. Put more than 100 flights on the slow poke and the plane finally gave out. Took the engine off and put it in a box. Engine still runs like it was new! Only thing I ever did to it was replace the front bearing (it was getting noisy).. try that with a Evolution!!
Go with the OS... you won't be dissappointed!
