I got my prop balanced and now I am working on the backplate. It is the stock one that come with the Avistar. I am using a Top Flite balancer. I have about 10 holes drilled in one side and its not even showing signs of lightening. Am I doing something wrong?

I am rather new to RCU myself. I started with a trainer last fall, I have a 4 star now. I have never balanced a prop. I believe balance becomes and issue with larger engines that spin faster and heaver props. If its a trainer, I wouldn't worry about it.

nope, never had a prob either, 10 holes, spinning at 14,000 rpm, just becareful. stay out of the plane of rotation

The drag on your balancer is more than the weight of the spinner.
With 10 holes in a 2 inch spinner, I would be careful of it coming apart.

It seems to me that it is the smaller engines that have higher rpms.

no it's not needed, all that will happen is your electronics will get shaken to death....seriously, even a crappy trainer, you get better performance with a balanced prop. I ALWAYS balance my props. Good article on balancing them in the newest Model Airplane News. A spinner on the other hand, i have not balanced one. I think i will do one tonight and see how it comes out.

I had terrible vibration problems from a spinner after I enlarged the holes to accomodate a larger prop.
Spinners do need to be balanced, but a small shaving of material should do it. I'd start over if I was you.
regards.

I picked up a dubro 2" spinner but now I am having trouble getting it on my 11x4 prop. I can't get it to snap shut. But it ballaced pretty good with no mods.

Did you try moving the prop one way or the other before tightening the nut. Sometimes putting it all the way against the stop is not the right spot.

On the Avistar with an OS 46 forget the spinner and what possessed you to want to put an 11x4 prop on it? I run a GMS 47 on a strickly 3D bird with an 11x4 prop cause it needs the thrust. Are you planning on trying to hover the Avistar?
Good luck,

CM YEP thats the plan. I had to switch to a 2 1/4" prop to use that pitch. I pulled the spinner out of my Funtanna bag, works like a charm. I like the dubro a lot better. I might get me another yellow one in that size, for giving a more directional apearance, plus the yellow looks good. A dubro spinner would just not acomidate that pitch blade. I stuck a 10x7 and it snapped right up. Now I just need to get the darn plane balanced. Besides, with an 11x4 I hope it should cruise very slowly.

the 11x4 is a good prop for the avistar(from experience). it doesnt fly overly fast and lands slow. i started with a 10x6 but the 11x4 works much better. the 10x6 was fast and it wouldnt climb neer as well as the 11x4. try both and youll see. they both work though.

I have a 10x7 also, but I think I am going to start with the 11 and work my way down. I have a date semi set with my local field to get checked off, and soime instruction, in 2.5 weeks. Looking forward to get in the air again.

I trashed spinner on mine, got me a du-bro spinner nut. Looks like a mini spinner, works like a prop nut, balanced right out of the package and it works with an electric starter. I tried balancing my spinner as well, but while it balanced out on the prop balancer, I noticed a little bit of off-center rotation, so it might not be dynamically blanced... either way, the prop nut is a LOT easier to get on and off.
