I have searched some and was wondering which one you guys think would be better. I think out of these i would like best. I have a nexstar and a alpha trainer. I am learning alot and this plane wont fly for awhile i just want to get started with it. I was thinking about
Phoenix Models Sukhoi SU-31 46 ARF [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEDN8&P=0]here[/link]
Phoenix Models Phoenix Extra 300S [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGPL7&P=3]I like this one[/link]
Great Planes U-Can-Do 3D 46 ARF [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDUL8&P=ML]here[/link]
I plan on putting one of my .46 motors on this airplane. I like the u can do but someone said i would need a bigger motor but tower sales them with a .40???
The extra 300? Im not too sure i could handle it at first but i havent ever seen one fly.
And the sukhoi someone told me it is a great 2nd plane. Out of all i think i would rather have the extra 300 or the u can do. What do you guys think.
Thank guys [8D]

I was warned off of getting a Sukhoi or an Extra (or a Giles or a Cap 232 for that matter) as my second plane. Apparently these planes 'snap'. Hopefully someone else will be along to explain what that means. I bought a GP super sportster 40 in the end and stuck my OS46FX in that.
Personally, having seen a U-Can-Do at my club, I reckon it would make an awesome second plane that would have a long lifetime due to the wide range of stuff you can do with it. I think you have to be careful not to fly around at high speed all the time in them, that is not what they are designed to do - they are designed to do 3d tricks although the one I saw was in a pattern contest
Just my 2p

Due to the LE and TE taper, as well as airfoil taper, the Sukhoi and Extra have a tendency to stall out at the wingtip (one wings stops providing sufficient lift) which results in a "snap" in one direction or the other when the plane enters a high angle of attack (excessive elevator input relative to the airspeed usually causes this). This is also what makes them so effective at snap rolls and other fast manuevers.
The short answer is that it is usually considered too much to learn for someone just off a trainer (but not impossible for some really talented indivduals).
BTW, I suggest a Sig 4 Star 40 or 60, Goldberg Tiger, or Great Planes Super Sport for an excellent 2nd plane.

Here's some second planes depending on where you plan to go in RC:[ul][*] World Models (Airborne Models) T-34 - Great aerobatic trainer/Club Racer/first warbird[*] U-Can-Do 3D (.46 or .60) - Super good 3-D ship that can be tamed down and fly slow and gentle until you want to step it up.[*] Sig 4-Star - The 'traditional' second airplane and first low wing, tail dragger.

I think one thing to consider is how much do you like your trainer? If you find flying the trainer is fairly challenging then I would stick to a "milder" 2nd plane. However, if you are getting really bored flying circuits with the trainer, I would suggest a sportier plane.
I just started flying around 4 weeks ago and have already bought, assembled and flown my 2nd plane. My second plane is a Great Planes Extra 300S .40 size - I have a .46 engine in it.
Set your dual rates so the low rates are around 50% and the Extra 300S will fly similar to your trainer. The biggest difference is that the trainer is fairly self-correcting vs. the Extra will keep going at the same angle of attack until you change it. Landing is also a little different in that you need a little more speed on a taildragger - but not much for a 3 wheel landing.
The cool thing about a sport plane as your 2nd is that you can keep turning up your rates to make it more aerobatic as you get used to the feel of how it flies.
Good luck, and have fun.

Depending on what your flying style is, I would say:
- ULTRA STICK with flaps (GO CROW!!! Harrier for days, light breeze = harrier landings), not too fast though, builds easier than most trainers, manual is extremely detailed.
- Extra or Edge or Sukoi or Giles, just watch for the snap (a.k.a. the tip stall), keep the air speed up and get used to hotter landings, learn neat tricks, step up to 3-D flying, yay!!
- U-Can-Do-3d, awesome, easy to build, learn to hover in a week, not too fast but awesome 3-D performance for cheap.
- T-34 is nice for warbird look, if you fly off of grass don't think about retracts unless you like bending the gears back every few flights. any world models plane get's a thumbs up from me.
- Aresti - FAI kinda guy? Fly pattern easily with this, IMAC Basic - Sportsman, buddy of mine can do rolling harriers in his.
Again you might want to assess how you like to fly then move upward from there.
have fun!

Thanks alot guys. Im kinda leaning towards the extra300, giles, or the u can do. I would love to do prop hangs and i like the way the u can do looks. I dont know i have read as many reviews as i can find. THe giles says it is good with trainer experience. Thats me that one might win. I fly the hell out of my trainers, kinda scared the wings will fly off [:-] But if you guys have any more input i would appriciate it.
thanks.
thanks.

Slowbird ... the Extra/Gile/SU31 and UCD3D are totally different creatures ... I am not interested in 3D flying at all ... some are. You need to decide. I do hear that the H9 Funtana flies like a pattern plane ... that may be a good compromise.

The U-Can-Do MAY be OK if you use reduced control surface throws. The U-Can-Do is not that forgiving of a plane.
I suggest looking at the World Models Rambler 30 or Rambler 45 (has retracts). These are clones of the Astro Hog and excellent flying planes. They are aerobatic and forgiving. The SIG 4-Star is also a frequently suggested as a second plane.
I have flown both, and both fly great.
My personal preference is the Rambler 30. With a 46 FX the plane will knife edge with minimal elevator input and is quite aerobatic. The plane is very good in wind and is also a "floater". If you decide to go with the Rambler AND use the wheel pants, I recommend applying a layer of 2 oz glass to the inside of the pants and use the SIG (Sullivan ?) wheel pant brackets, especially if flying off of grass. The stock pant attaching setup is a little weak/fragile for grass.

A profile is about the only thing you can prop hang with a 46. You will be dissapointed with the sukhoi, extra, or UCD with a 46 if prop hanging is what you want.
